  • These are some of my tips to minimize regretful purchases. An important part of "buying less and buying better" is to be more conscious of your shopping and only buy things that will work for your lifestyle, that you'll actually use and enjoy having.

    When I'm shopping, I always have the thought that if I don't absolutely love the item or if I'm not sure and hemming and hawing about the item then I don't buy it. I've never had one instance of regretting not buying that so-so item and it has saved me a lot of money that way.

      I can't believe I also have that same thought
      But I don't know why this thought only came before or after buying clothes
      Not while I am shopping

    Your example of starting to cook with the tools you already have in your kitchen is SO relevant to us right now and I am a big proponent of that approach. We started cooking this year and have been really happy with the VERY few tools and supplies we already own. The only thing we eventually ended up purchasing was a food processor and it was something we'd debated about and decided we really needed. Now I love using it so much more because it was a thought out purchase that really helps our process in the kitchen!

      Nice! Yeah I was really surprised too how few things I actually need to make what I want, especially when there are SO MANY kitchen tools out there.

    While online 'window' shopping I add everything I likes on my bookmarks. After a few days I go back and see how I feel about the items and I usually just realize ''nah I don't need and don't want this''

  • @Pannenkoekenplantje
    @Pannenkoekenplantje Před 7 lety +2

    I always use the "would I still buy this if it costs 50% more?" or "would I want to save up money to buy this thing?" questions to see if I actually want/need that particular item, or if I'm just buying something because I can.

  • @syddlinden8966

    I'm not minimalist, but I do basically all of these. My big stick to is "Will I wear it? Will I use it?" If I can't answer that with a solid, "totally", it goes back on the shelf. I do the wait a week thing with online orders all the time, or with craft items like yarn, so I can be really sure that's the color I want, etc.
    The biggest issue I run into with online stuff is on Amazon and getting knock offs or lesser quality used items than listed, and there's really nothing you can do about it. I never buy cologne online for this reason. And often reading the reviews only tells you someone got a knock off, not which seller they bought through. The worst tend to be used books and dvds with dishonest third-party sellers. You kind of have to choose if you want to pay full price for the item new, or go used and risk having to do a return or refund if the item is lesser condition or doesn't play right. (And you've got to take the time to check dvds as soon as they show up.) A friend and I have a couple book dealers on Amazon we never buy through anymore because their idea of used-very good is not very good (that and selling stickered up library copies without informing the buyer). hippo-books is one of them.

    great tips as always!
    my n. 1 tip for buying clothes, as obvious that can sound, is TO TRY ON on the item when you are IN THE STORE.
    In the past I was used to buy clothes thinking "oh yes this is great, it will look awesome on me" and 90% of the time that was not the case, maybe it was just the wrong size, but often it was something that it was not right for my style, my body shape or simply it was not so nice as it looked on display or as I had figured in my mind.
    At that point the money was gone, and yes, you can return the item, but you often exchange the initial thing with something "meah" that you HAVE to buy because you cannot have the money back.

  • @ashleemackley4035
    @ashleemackley4035 Před 7 lety +15

    Two additional things I do:. I imagine what it would be like to have to get rid of it shortly after I buy it. For instance, would it be difficult to sell or donate, out would I feel bad having to throw it away? Sometimes that helps me decide. I also imagine how hard it would be to store it or move it around if I ever have to move.

      Such a good tip!! We should all be more conscious of the lifecycle of the things we consume and think about what happens to it after we no longer want it/can use it. :)

    God, I love this sweater!
    I realized quite a while ago that purchases I make because I absolutely love the item at the time and I just "have to" buy it, end up being disappointing. And the purchases I'm not 100% sure of, because the item is more practical than pretty, are mostly those that I'm happy about! So my tip would be - don't always follow your heart in buying things because it can be very superficial. :D

    I definitely find that time is the best help when preventing unnecessary purchases or regrets. I keep wish lists or items in my "shopping cart" on sites and try to always wait a while. Jenna K's comment is one I am using more and more as well. I make the effort to focus on what I really love and just let the rest go. Not 100% but with practice, I'm getting more and more in tune with this one. The third strategy for me is clarity--getting clear on what I want my life to feel like and look like, and how I want to move in the world makes a huge difference in how I see the things I may want to bring into my experience. Thanks for these tips!

    I really like your idea of keeping an ongoing "wish list" on hand so you don't purchase things you don't really need. I have a bad habit of buying things that are on sale just because they're on sale. It's something I'm working on this year. As a new subscriber to your channel, I'm really inspired by you. :)

    Great tips! We certainly use the wait policy especially since moving into our Airstream. We constantly have lists or carts going with items we want/think we need but after letting the item sit for a few days to a few weeks it doesn't seem as important anymore. We also have a general in/out policy with the idea being that we have to be willing to give something up for the new item (in most cases). This really drives the point home that we need to really want it before we buy it. It has prevented a lot of regretful purchases. Thanks so much for the great tips!

  • @missmatti
    @missmatti Před 7 lety

    I'm such a slow shopper. I do nowadays never regret anything I buy (unless something that I thought were good quality turned out not to be.. like bad headsets!).
    My tip is to have your wishlist but do allow yourself to take time to find the items. When I was younger I could have for example "Black knitted jumper with oversized polo neck" and I remember me finding a cheap one in acrylic in the end because "I had to have it that season" I barely ever wore it as it was itchy and full of lint. Years later I got another knitted polo neck which I today (7 years later) still wear. So I guess allowing yourself to shop slow is cheaper and better in the end.
    I still have some Etsy items I've obsessed over for 2 years now and I finally gonna allow myself to buy as I reached a goal (full time job in Canada!).

    I know this is an old video but I'm new to your channel. I really loved what you said about "buying for real life, not ideal life." That really hit me, because it made me realize that that's what I was doing so much in the past. I probably still do it, but definitely less so since making some changes just in recent months with my shopping and how I live. Thank you so much.

  • @StarspangledHeart

    Having a set budget has really helped me be more picky about my purchases since I only have a set amount of money to spend in each category each month. I also try and push my purchases till the end of the month so I have more time to think about my purchases. Then, I can compare any other perspective purchases to that future purchase I want to make. Usually, I decide to wait and stick to my original purchase plan but if not, then I didn't really want it as much as I thought I did!

I literally sit on my potential purchases for weeks (sometimes months!) so that I can do adequate research on the companies and also to see if I'm still lusting after it after some time. And yessss so happy to hear you mention Project Just! Their database is soooo helpful I reference it constantly.

    I definitely believe in shopping with a mission. Be strong and stick to your guns. If you really need and like the item you would buy it even if it wasn't on sale! Being on sale is a bonus.
    I go into my favourite store and tell the store clerk what I'm looking for size colour and style then we both look. It is inevitable that we find the item. Stick to your mission!

    My maxim: buy the fewest, best things you can possibly afford, and get rid of the rest. As a result, I have a few things that are all a joy, and will last the rest of my life. Another way to say it: I can't afford cheap stuff -- it costs too much in the long run. This probably falls apart when it comes to fashion, but I'm hopeless in that realm, anyway.

    Love the video! Something I try to do is not buy more than 1 item at a time. I'll find an item on my wishlist and get so excited that that 'high' pushes me go purchase more items in the same shopping trip... And I rationalize those superfluous purchases as items that are sort of "close enough" to my wishlist that I should buy them. Of course, that doesn't make sense at all anymore once I get home, and buyer's remorse sets in :(

    I saw a video about socks production and they said that their product was not the cheapest in the market and because of that, the workers had better salaries compared to cheaper socks from companies where people overworked for a littler salary, so maybe don't buy the cheapest because you might be truly helping the workers and you'll take more care of it than stuff you buy new for like a dollar and you know you can easily replace

    Hi Erin, due to our moving we need a few home supplies (like toilet brush etc). What are your thoughts on IKEA? I have heard bad things about them (I downloaded their sustainability report though)

    • @MyGreenCloset
      @MyGreenCloset  Před 7 lety +4

      Hm it's tricky. Obviously they're not a great company (crazy mass-production and the effects) but when I looked into them I was actually pretty impressed with some of their sustainability initiatives. There definitely are better options though but they're not always easily accessible/affordable. My personal feeling is that I use them as a last resort- we moved quickly in the spring and basically needed to furnish an apartment from scratch, first we tried to find what we could secondhand (you can often get a lot of IKEA furniture and products secondhand and most of our stuff we got that way), then looked into local companies which was difficult because we didn't have a large budget, and then anything we couldn't find elsewhere we ended up getting from IKEA.
      I guess my thoughts are to try and avoid it, but certain things like toilet brushes you can't really get secondhand and I also totally understand not wanting to spend a bunch of money on a toilet brush haha. If you are getting anything from IKEA I'd also recommended if you can trying to buy the better quality/more sustainable products so for example instead of the super cheap plastic one, opting for the metal one which will *hopefully* last longer.
      I hope that helps? Home goods can be difficult :(

      @chrisadimitriadou Před 7 lety

      personally, it gives me this vague feeling that it's not really mine (if that makes any sense). and therefore, second hand items are usually the first i give away when i do a clean out, even though their quality can be better than pieces i have bought first hand.

      i don't buy things unless i try them but from time to time, friends clean out their closets and give me clothes they don't want, or it happens to find a good bargain in a thrift store. owing garments i don't need is one thing, but for me it takes time to feel "mine" something that actually isn't. that could be why we often see "the dress with a person" and not "the person with a dress"
