    Audio Issues
    When I got the Hero5 I immediately switched Audio to "Wind only". For some reason I had switched it back to "Auto" and forgot about it. Many clips I captured this day started with muted sound. And some of the clips were muted at multiple positions. Background: The Hero5 has 3 microphone. It calculates a stereo sound out of it. If the wind noise is to strong (Auto mode) or if it is set to "Wind only". It switches to mono on chooses the microphone with least wind noise.
    Trails:
    These are no official trails. So I will not post any information about the exact location. If you want to do some trail riding in Austria have a look at these destinations:
    Reschenpass, Nauders, Reschen: • Enduro-Trails in Naude...
    Sölden: • Sölden Mountain Bike E...
    Saalbach Hinterglemm (also downhill tracks): • Hacklberg-Trail Saalba...
    If you are interested in even more natural trails you can also check out these regions in South Tyrol and Italy (We've been there in the last 2 years):
    - Around Latemar (Dolomites, German: Latemar-Umrundung)
    - Molveno/Paganella
    - Meran, Latsch
    You should be able to find trails with Google there.

    Mount:
    When I ride the enduro bike I use the GoPro Chesty mount. It's not perfect and I have to tighten it quite a bit. With video stabilization it seems to work quite good.

    Protune Settings:
    Color: Flat
    WB: Native
    EV Comp: -0.5
    Sharp: Low
    Others: Standard
    It was quite dark in the wood. But the sky was very bright compared to the ground. I used Adobe Premiere Lumetry Color effect to get the color and sharpness back. I'm still learning with this. For most of the video I used one setting. At some positions I used other settings when there was too much "bright" sky in the image.
    GoPro Hero5 settings:
    I filmed in 2.7K SuperView with digital video stabilization. The source video size is. 2704x2032. I cropped this to CZcams 1440p - which is 2560x1440. So I'm able to fine tune the vertical position. And maybe the SuperView effect/distortion is minimized a very little bit.

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Thank you! The problem is that the winter is close. So I'm not able to shoot more videos with the GoPro Hero5. I have footage of a couple of really cool bike days or tracks from the last two years which are not yet online. But I shot them with my old Hero3 Black. Thus not the quality of the Hero5 of course. On the other side the quality of this video is not that good either - it was simply too dark in the wood. But good news: This video only shows half of the awesome trails we rode that day (last Sunday). The best is yet to come! (But the trail starting in this video at 4:40 was really amazing!)

    • @roboticrob1796
      @roboticrob1796 Před 7 lety

      Do you have to travel far to get to these sort of trails because where I live in England its mostly flat and boring ( I live fairly close to London) if I ever wanna do something fast, steep, and technical I usually have to travel over 100 miles :(

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      I live close to Salzburg. I can ride without to go by car and even up to 800 vertical meters. But as mountain biking in general is prohibited in Austria it's not always that easy. Usually it's only allowed where there is some interest for tourism. I have about 1 to 1.5 hours to about 7 bike parks. And then I'm also in the mountains. These trails where also about 1 hour away but actually the home trails of one of the friends I was with. I had the privilege that he showed me "his" awesome trails!

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety +2

      Thanks! For the first videos I did with the Hero5 I had set it to "Wind only". Here in this video the audio setting was off (accidentally). When it's "off", then this means "Auto". In Auto mode it switches automatically between Stereo and Wind only. I think you can even hear it that it sometimes sounds more stereo. Sometimes not.

    • @bzikofski
      @bzikofski Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the explanation, this will come handy in case I decide to get the Hero 5 (but planning for the Session version). Also the digital stabilization looks fine to me, no need for a gimbal here (unless you want butter smooth vids). Cheers!

      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Thank you. Do you see a difference to 30 fps? In the motion or because maybe CZcams will encode 60 fps material with a higher bit rate?

    • @TheProjectX3
      @TheProjectX3 Před 7 lety +1

      60 feels so alive like in GoPro trailer video, but 30 is smoother on the details I think, but it is personal preference

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety +1

      I preferred 60 fps because I could make better slow motion effects if needed. But the 2.7K SuperView mode only support 30 fps. In this video in the dark wood I assume there is not much of a different because there is some motion blur anyways. Maybe there is a bigger difference if it's brighter and the image is sharper. But I think that the 2.7K (in CZcams 1440p) is worth it over 60 fps at 1080p.

    Man... How do these bikes handle so much beating?
    Amazing trails, and nice footage!

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Thank you! These are called "enduro mountain bikes". They are not quite as strong as downhill bikes (but close), have 150 - 170 mm of travel (I have 165 at the rear and 170 at the front). But they still are quite light (12 to 14 kg) to ride uphill with them. Also the frame geometry supports uphill and downhill riding. Once I tried how much vertical meters I can ride in one day. Total ascend (and downhill) was over 3000 vertical meters (10,000 feet). And this year we had a couple of weekends (Fr-Su - 3 days) where we rode about 14,000 vertical meters downhill - the ascends with and without the support of lifts and cable cars. So these bikes are really versatile.

  • @MrCapediver
    @MrCapediver Před 7 lety

    Great stuff DR! How about Auto-low light? On or Off?...I always get poor results when its on and filming in sunny conditions in forests especially for slowmo edits because of the variation in FPS....

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Actually I did not read what the the auto low light mode actually is. For mountain biking it's surely not a good idea. My first "helmet camera" had a low light mode - I think it used the infrared spectrum of the light and switched to black and white.

    • @MrCapediver
      @MrCapediver Před 7 lety

      When Autolowlight is active, the FPS automatically drops in darker conditions to enable more light to hit the sensor and this then affects slowmo in post. The higher the FPS, the smoother the slomo, so if FPS is changing all the time in Autolowlight, the slomo is not best unless you use something like Twixtor to fill in missing frames but then you run the risk of artifacts been created and you'll see this on the edge of moving objects especially where there's not much difference in contrast between the object you are trying to slow down and the background...ie its easier for the slomo plugin/effect to create new frames where the moving object is clearly different from the background.
      You also see this effect of Autolowlight on with flaring (over exposed areas) when you go from dark to light areas quickly and the camera has to make fast adjustments to changing light.

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety +1

      It's always a trade-off. If the light is too low and you want so see something the shutter has to be opened for a longer time. But then you get motion blur. And of course the shutter cannot be opened longer than one frame so it maybe even has to reduce the frame rate. But maybe the image will be too dark if you don't use auto low light and would not look good either ...

    @RickDawsonUK Před 7 lety

    do you think the image stabliization takes something away from the video?

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      I don't think - I know ;) This is also a reason why I filmed in SuperView. With FOV mode "Wide" and image stabilization the picture is a little to small in the vertical direction - especially if it's not aligned correctly (and it was the first time with this setup). SuperView is actually a 4:3 image where the edges are bloated to 16:9. In the 4:3 or SuperView mode the vertical FOV is more than large enough - even with stabilization. See here a FOV comparison when FOV is set to "Wide": czcams.com/video/pQrn2PzMItI/video.html (especially at 4:55)

      Das hängt von mehreren Faktoren ab. Ich filme in ProTune, da verwendet er eine höhere Bitrate als normal. Die Original-Clips von diesem Video haben 60 MBit/s. Das wären ca. 450 MB pro Minute. Deckt sich auch mit einem knapp 4 GB File bei 8:52 Länge.

    Saugeil, sobald Bewegung kommt ist die Quali aber nicht so besonders, liegt das am Protune?

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Prinzipiell liegt's am Licht. Es war zeitweise ziemlich dunkel. Damit wird dann jedes einzelne Bild verschwommen. Wenn man bei CZcams ein Video rauflädt, sind am Anfang nur die niedrigen Auflösungen verfügbar. Aber ich weiß nicht, ob es Einbildung ist, aber teils kommt mir vor, als ob sie später auch die einzelnen Auflösungen etwas später noch mit besserer Qualität nachliefern. Vermutlich aber nur Einbildung. Das ProTune-Bild muss man nachschärfen, aber wenn die Einzelbilder verschwommen sind, bringt man da leider nicht so viel raus.

    • @TrailattacksDe
      @TrailattacksDe Před 7 lety

      ja, habs mir auch schon gedacht. Meine 5 ist auch schon da, bin von der Gopro 3 umgestiegen, da ist der Qualitätsunterschied bei Schwachlicht enorm. Einen Vergleich der beiden Cams werde ich auch in Kürze uplaoden. Danke J

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Es wäre auch interessant, ob man bei solchen Situationen mit fixem Shutter und/oder ISO noch mehr rausholen kann. Bin kein Experte, aber nach meinem Verständnis: mit kürzerem Shutter-Speed wäre das Bild schärfer, aber auch dunkler. Das könnte man eventuell mit höhrem ISO ausgleichen. Das würde aber wieder mehr Rauschen verursachen. Rauschen ist schlecht zu komprimieren. Das müsste man dann software-seitig rausnehmen...

      This was also one of my first thoughts. But I have filmed some other videos. I only had it at one other day on one video for a couple of seconds (I only recorded a couple of seconds). But that was it. Maybe a firmware problem. maybe something with the micro SD card. Meanwhile I also switched to the recommended SanDisk cards.

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Die Stabilisierung macht die GoPro Hero5 Out-of-the-Box. Etwas ausgeschnitten habe ich allerdings. Das GoPro 2.7K Video ist 2704x1520. CZcams 1440p ist 2560x1440. Der Bildauschnitt von 2.7K SuperView ist so groß, dass ich das eben etwas ausgeschnitten habe. Hat sich auch angeboten, weil es das erste Mal war, dass ich mit der Hero5 und der Chesty gefilmt habe (am Downhill-Bike fahre ich mit Leatt Brace Nackenstütze und da habe ich sie dort montiert). Und ich hab sie mit dem J-Mount - aber im Vergleich zur Hero3 nicht Upside-Down montiert. Da ich da noch keine Erfahrung hatte, hat es sich angeboten, beim Schnitt noch etwas nachzujustieren.

      Ok, merci für die Infos! Das Ergebnis taugt echt. Evtl. muss ich dann doch mal ein Upgrade holen...bei mir wackelt mit dem Enduro & Chestmount alles und wenn ich es so stark stabilisiere bleibt vom Bild nicht mehr viel übrig ;)

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety +1

      Wenn es ständig wackelt dann verschwimmt auch das Bild. Da bringt dann Stabilisieren nicht so viel. Hab leider heuer auch ein Wochenende so gefilmt... :( Meiner Meinung nach müsste die Chesty eine größere Grundplatte haben. Damit der Hebel der Platte im VErgleich zu GoPro größer wird. Ich hab mir dann auch für die alte GoPro die "The Frame"-Halterung besorgt. Damit war die 3er statt ca. 150 nur mehr knapp unter 100 schwer (wenn ich es richtig im Kopf habe).

    An MTB nut friend of mine lives there, but always has to look out for the land owners ...

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Yes - that's exactly how it is. There are regions where it's really a problem to ride. But there are also others where it is tolerated. Or as long as there are not many people riding or hiking it it's OK. That day we rode almost 40 km on trails and gravel roads. It was not quite a fine weather (it was even snowing some single snow flakes at the top). I think we only met 2 hikers on the trail and a couple more on the gravel roads. It's also often a problem near cities where a lot of bikers and hikers want to use the same trails. The good thing is that more and more regions "discover" the mountain bikers and build trail networks - more or less naturally. I like these offers. I'ts always good to have dedicated mountain bike trail where I do not bother any hikers and can usually ride as fast as I'm able to. And they have lifts so you can often ride 5000 vertical meters downhill with only maybe 1000 vertical meters uphill.

    • @NotADuncon
      @NotADuncon Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah but it's still nice to go ride some undiscovered trail with few people in it. Too many trail networks choose to create trails looking like pumptracks and many of them don't feel like real exploration.

    @NicMediaDesign Před 7 lety

    Have you already heard of the Sony FDR X3000? It uses lens based stabilization, which doesn't only work way better than the Hero 5s solution, but also is available in 4K and slow motion modes.
    I would be very happy, if you would check it out, since the Hero 5s footage is still very jerky.

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      I know that the Sony action cameras do offer optical video stabilization as Austrians fastest mountain bike downhill racer (Markus Pekoll) is sponsored by Sony and posts videos from time to time. But I prefer the chest mount. And the design of the Sony cams is not that optimal for chest mounting.

    • @NicMediaDesign
      @NicMediaDesign Před 7 lety

      Downhill Rangers That is only partially true - only the latest model (which is out since 2 weeks) offers that new lens based stabilization (with moving parts inside the lens).
      I can't find a video from Markus Pekoll which was made using that camera.
      The solution before that was software based just like the Hero 5s new stabilization.
      I personally don't find it to be a problem to mount the camera on a chest-harness. The GoPro is around 3.5 centimeters long (measured including the lens) - the FDR X3000 is 8.3 centimeters long. So it is just slightly sticking out.
      I can't ask for more than you trying it out (maybe you know someone who owns it).
      With a 2€ adapter (quarter inch to GoPro mount) you can mount it to your chest Harness.
      Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it ;)

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      Sorry. I do not know how I came to the conclusion that the Sony action cameras where already stabilized optically. I was not that impressed back then (long ago) because most videos I saw had the camera on the helmet. With stabilized footage from the helmet the action gets lost a bit and further more I often saw a stabilized image but a helmet visor shaking like crazy ;)
      The problem with the original chest harness is that it does not work very well for me. I already had to modify it a little bit that it does not shake that much. But meanwhile the straps have possible already lost tension. I bought a lighter housing ("The Frame") for my old GoPro. But the Hero5 is much heavier as the old without frame - so I have to set the straps really tight.
      Just saw that the Sony is not that heavy (114g). But the center of gravity is farther away as with a GoPro-sized camera.
      But when downhill riding I mount the camera on my neck brace. This is very stable. That should work. And as I get a gimbal to test I have too find a solution for the chest mount problem anyway.
      A gimbal would be quite bulky in comparison to the Sony. It would be a cool opportunity to test the Sony. But for everyday use I think I prefer a rather flat camera design when mounting on the chest. The Sony would probably fit best on the helmet under the visor.

    • @NicMediaDesign
      @NicMediaDesign Před 7 lety

      Downhill Rangers Thanks again for that detailed reply.
      Its interesting to hear that you use a custom mounting solution - ever thought of getting in touch with a manufacturer who produces third party GoPro accessories to create a better mounting solution?
      With the size of your CZcams channel I am confident that at least one company would take your suggestions into consideration.
      As I said - if you get the chance to test the FDR X3000 I would be really interested to see the video, yet if you prefer the GoPro and don't have a chance to get your hands on the Sony, I am fine with that, too.

    • @DownhillRangers
      @DownhillRangers  Před 7 lety

      You have definitely raised my interest in the FDR X3000. What I don't like with the GoPro: CZcams offers quite a good quality at 1440p (not visible in this video above - light conditions and I did not sharpen the raw/Protune video enough). 2.7K of the GoPro is just above 1440p of CZcams. In Wide mode it offers 60fps. But with wide & stabilization the alignment of the camera is very critical because the vertical FOV is quite small. So I used SuperView here. But this distorts the image quite a lot and it only works with 30 fps as 2.7K. Bad that the Sony does not offer a 1440p resolution with 60fps (as far as I saw).
