As a recording engineer, I can hear it every time I hear him play a lead. Prince approached music technologically, and he approached technology musically. He had a mind that understood what the tech was doing to shape the sound, and explored his gear to make it do things undreamt of even by the creators. His guitar tones are unique in one note. There will never be another like him.
I think Susan Rogers (Prince’s staff engineer from Purple Rain on until 1987) said Prince was absolutely fascinated with tech and how to use it to get new sounds in the studio? Even early on, Prince was electronically manipulating voices and really became distinct by his mixing electronic drums like the LinnDrum alongside live drums like it was nothing unusual!
