Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) was a Polish composer of contemporary music. He is most famous for his third symphony, but his oeuvres stretch from piano miniatures to gigantic choral works. His earlier compositions are in serialist style, while his later ones are in a minimalist style.
This is one of the “transition” pieces of Górecki, away from serialism, and to the “holy minimalism” inspired by old Polish music as well as folk music.
It was dedicated to Tadeusz Szarewski, and was premiered on 24 September 1969 at Warsaw Autumn Festival by National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrzej Markowski.
It is scored for 5 Horns, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, and Strings.
