  • SEE YOU NEXT FRIDAY FOR A NEW EPISODE OF 80'S HORROR MEMORIES!
Debating sequels versus their predecessors is something all movie lovers have voluntarily gone through. While an excellent Round 2 after the knockout punch Ridley delivered, and following that film’s terrific protagonist into a new circle of hell, “Aliens” is its own beast, different enough to build on the legacy of the original while hitting some of the same crucial notes.
Is it a better movie than “Alien”? That’s a fun debate to have, but one for another day. What isn’t really up for debate is that “Aliens” is one of the best sequels released in the 80s - and hell, it may just be the best horror sequel of all time. So stop your grinnin’ and drop your linen, because we’re going to nuke the site from orbit and relive some “Aliens” in our 80s Horror Memories.
    Written By: Eric Walkuski

It's pretty cool that Bill Paxton and Lance Hendrickson were the only two actors to be taken down by a alien, a terminator, and a predator.

This is my all time favorite movie. I was born in 82, and my dad let me watch it when I was around 10/11. I watch it multiple times per year. When she takes over and smashes the APC through the nest is one hell of a genius sequence. And the Queen effects done practically, the mixture of action, horror and the overall pacing is perfect. I only found out a few weeks ago that a face hugger is teased at the end credits. But Alien 3 broke up Newt, Hicks and Ripley. Vasquez is a badass, and when Hudson goes out swinging it's a sad goodbye.

As an '80s kid in the '80s, I thought Michael Biehn was the coolest guy ever. He still is, actually. He really is an everyman type of person. And he can portray heroes and villains with equal humanity. He'd already played at least two villains before he portrayed the ultimate hero, Kyle Reese (his personal favorite character of all he's portrayed). Arnie has only ever portrayed one villain, and that villain, technically speaking, had no will of its own. It was just a functionary carrying out orders. Terminators are a lot like xenomorphs in that sense.
2:55 I did that with Evil Dead 2. Other than Michael Biehn, "Bruce Campbell is the finest man to grace a silver screen." ~Psychostick
7:56 Plot twist: The xenomorphs aren't technically the villains, per se. More like a force of nature (despite it being an artificial lifeform). From their perspective, as Hudson points out, they're just an insect hive doing what comes naturally. Many real-world insect species are just as brutal (as pointed out by Seth Brundle in 'The Fly' which came out the same year), yet they don't think of themselves as "evil." Probably because that sort of thing, philosophy and ethics and whatnot, is for humans to ponder. And no, that doesn't make the xenomorph an embodiment of "nihilism." Too many people throw that word around. Ants and bees (and parasitoid wasps) don't embody "nihilism."
9:12 "Grizzly," not "gristly." 'Aliens' is all meat, not gristle. In fact, Yautja refer to xenomorphs as "hard meat." I learned that from reading the OG AvP comics back in the '90s.
10:03 The US first fielded modular grenade launchers (XM148, M-203, etc.) during the Vietnam War, which is part of what inspired the design of the M-41A pulse rifle. It's called a "pulse" rifle because it uses an electric pulse to ignite the prismatic blocks of propellant that encase caseless rounds. Caseless ammo was an idea that engineers had toyed around with during the Cold War, trying to create the next evolution in small arms, but they could never perfect it. The most successful caseless combat rifle was the HK G11K2, but it was far from cost-effective, and didn't really offer much advantage over rifles that used conventional cased ammo.
Note: The M-56 smart gun would be roughly equivalent to the M-60, but with "smart" technology. Basically, that means it has built-in auto-aim. The actual props are built from MG-42 machine guns. The M-41A props were built from Thompson M-1A1 submachine guns spliced together with subcompact Remington 870 shotguns (with Franchi SPAS-12 forearms and reworked heat-shield).
    13:07 "The Dispensables"
13:18 "Biehn" is pronounced the same as "Bean." According to The Nostalgia Critic, he's the only man to have died in cinema more than Sean Bean.
13:20 As a stoic naturally would. Hicks is more of a classic stoic than Reese. Reese doesn't think twice about using his emotions as fuel.
14:10 [cue 'Spear of Justice' theme]
15:53 Did James Cameron really think "Queen takes Bishop" in his mindbrain when he was coming up with that?
17:20 There's a deleted scene that shows that he was taken alive and "impregnated" (or whatever you call it).
19:03 "Fuck 'Alien 3'." ~Michael Biehn (Yes, he actually said that.)
20:17 Did you ever see 'Lily C.A.T.'? One of the best '80s anime films ever. Wears its influences on its sleeve. It's basically 'The Thing' on the set of 'Alien'.

The problem with categorizing what Alien movie is better is that they all are different kinds of movies.
    1- a futuristic horror
    2- a futuristic action adventure
3- a futuristic dystopian psychological thriller
    4- a futuristic character driven sci-fi adventure.
(The others are just world building on the same story)
They are all good, just in different ways!🙂

    Both theatrical and extended versions
At the time I got them, was a rare gem in my country, I was thrilled to be able to have them
And "Aliens" is BY FAR my favorite of the bunch
It have it ALL, in the right amount, and not enough Sigourney's Ripley... Gosh I'm still waiting that promised sequel (which would ignore 3 and 4) that would continue THIS movie.
Carrie Hen didn't continue her carrere, but I read she's happy and that made me happy
I might re-watch this one this weekend, and both versions
I confess that extended is my fave

"Aliens" is the sequel for which all sequels in the genre are measured against. I remember my dad took me (age 10) and my brother (age 7) to see it when it came out. Needless to say, we were both shaped by the experience. He took us back the following weekend to see it again! Remember, this was 1986. We watched the hell out of it on VHS and Laserdisc. This is a movie for the ages. Another amazing entry guys! Next week: David Lynch! Can't wait! Cheers!

Conspicuously absent from this re-view is the name of the actress who played Vasquez. Among all the other characters listed here we hear the names of the performers, but no Vasquez. Was this done intentionally because Vasquez was played by Janette Goldstein in brown face. Yep. One of the best displays of acting talent Goldstein was instantly accepted as the hispanic Vasquez. She would later appear in Cameron's T-2 (John's Foster Mother) and again in Titanic (Irish mother who dies with her two kids in bed).

  • @Diablokiller999

I think Alien and part 2 in particular was build to always keep us in the "uncanny valley" of what it feels like.
We see someone impaled but we didn't wanna have it done to us,
the facehugger that look like an animal most people don't like but not 100% like it,
The android that not 100% looks like a human,
the feeling of having power (weapons) and having no chance (amount of aliens).
All this gets in our brains I guess, if we want it or not and that's what makes the movie so rememberable...

Alien is a horror movie in space. Aliens is a scifi action movie with a bunch of other elements mixed in. Nobody has been able to do it better. When people try stupid critics claim ‘this movie doesn’t know what it wants to be.’ That’s why i never listen to them

When I am asked which is the better film between ALIEN and ALIENS I say I cant choose one over the other because in some ways they are different genres. I feel the same anout the first two TERMINATOR films. Both original and sequel films lean in different directions. Its like comparing IT the tv mini-series to IT the film, its an unfair comparison. I love them all for different reasons and have since I was a kid. If I have to pick one over the other its going to be a thin line.

Lol ❤️ I went through the same consideration with Aliens, in regards to feeling the same way about both films...Alien was dark and empty, great movie, but too much for my little brain at the time, which is saying a lot having been raised on horror. When I did finally see Aliens, it immediately became an obsessive favorite similar to Star Wars or Jaws...it was an instant classic I couldn't get enough of.

  • @ItsaKindOfMagic86
    @ItsaKindOfMagic86 Před 6 měsíci

Alien is a suspece based horror. Slow purposeful build up and the less is more approach, which I always appreciate in horror, and movies in general. Aliens is an example of how to do a sequel. Bigger and give the audience what they want, more meat on the bone, more thrills and more depth to your hero(es), make good on that promise to the audience form the first film and the fans will reward you for it. Aliens is more action than suspense, but it works here because it is the 2nd round of Ripley vs the Aliens. The stakes must be raised. Action and horror should team up more often. They compliment each other rather well. The problem with current day is they rely heavily on nostalgia, gore and cheap twists and unnecessary retcons.

These are awesome videos. I've watched every single one, and I really enjoy Tyler's editing and narration. As a side note, I need to make this observation and see if anyone else notices it. There seems to be a strange tendency on the part of Tyler (and many other young folks these days) to skip pronouncing the "T" in words that connect the t sound to the n sound such as "titan" or "written." This is becoming a trend recently, and it's sort of odd and jarring. They skip the T sound in words such as these. Listen and you'll hear what I'm talking about. It seems to be all over the place, right now. Is anyone else noticing this?

And to think there’s a generation of people who think Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games paved the way for strong bad ass lead actress in an action movie

I'm compelled to defend Colonel Rhodes from Day of the Dead. Yes,he was a total dick who was running his own tiny fascist regime, but the thing all of the other characters you mentioned have in common that isn't true of Rhodes is that weasel-like quality of always trying to slither out of a situation by any means necessary. Col. Rhodes always struck me as a man who at very least would stand by his convictions to the bitter end.

It’s Brooke was a creep in aliens, which is one of my favorite of the old school one’s almost more than the first one. I’m sorry, but roads takes it even just inch even worse than Berg dude yes Burke was a slimy bureaucrat you know for the company roads takes it one further dude, he doesn’t care honestly dude I even almost kind of felt bad for the people for the cronies that we’re worth roads during day of the dead I still think still to this day I wish I could’ve met George Romero and I would love to have gotten at least to Sophia holographic I love the man’s work steel he got it he took the easy way. I think you could’ve been tore apart by the zombies just like roads and some of the other guys because they are just as bad Still one of my favorite. I liked Don more but dead. There were some villains in there that really should’ve got it more but I still think steel as his prick self took the easy way out. I think Babcia wrote him apart because he was really bad. He was almost worse than roads almost

Cameron is a leftist tool at this point unfortunately, but his imprint on the genre is absolutely incredible. Between this and the Terminator films he’s responsible for many of our nerd tendencies!
    Great episode

Ripley is proof it is possible to make female characters both strong & hot without castrating the male characters and making them stupid - just to show that female characters are stronger and smarter than all men. Stop making them all perfect Mary-Sues because I am done with Hollywood's: substitute the man for a chick, make it lame, and make her gay,
