    Things seep oil everywhere after 30 years! Definitely true, if you have the cash replace all the rubber hoses because at this point the rubber is just falling apart especially in hotter climates.

    Thanks you are one of the few who even own a 740 Volvo, with a stick trans, this car is unmatchable as far as a car for driving goes and easy to "Kick-Ass-on the road too, it just sticks to the road if you know how to drive; the one I have is a 1988 has 170.000 on the speedo, car must have been used as a student project from Wyo-Tech, because all of the left side of this car was simply torn All-to-Hell, it was as if they were trying to figure out how one of these cars comes apart, because they just cut everything up and made a mess of the inside, I start trying to find out why i had no head lights low or high beams checked all of fuses, i did find a blown fuse for the high beams and when i pulled the lever to bring them on, it blew the fuse, as i was digging around under the drivers seat i found a plug in for the lights which brought me high beams, But still no low beams and no blown fuses, no current at the lights no viz able broken or cut wires, switch is good because the tail lights work. This is amazing this will be the first time I have run into a car that has a low beam head light issue where most of the people i have contacted didn't have any clues other then "That Car is Too Old"!! I went through the all of the books or guys who had shops even the dealer here in Oakland California, only to find out not one person could give me information.Robert the Volvo repair guy seems to only work on fluff or PicnPull cars, not much detail repair. you were right the P.C.V. vent box tend to plug up this one was not bad although I find 0-5 weight synthetic engine oil won't carbon up because it doesn't break down under extreme heat. i checked the timing belt and found it to be a bit loose and just moved the set nut to remove the slop. i have a slight leak of oil at the distributor, where oil will leak down the back of the engine, i do believe there is an O-ring in there. As i dig through my 740 i will put some information out on what I find out this low head light inoperative problem. Also I will bring up some of my experience Racing Volvo, and all of the "Hurt" feelings I ran into. Glad to see there are still a few 740 people out there.

    He's right.
    I've owned 4 of these, I always do this and all/any leaks stop. My last 740 completed 250,000miles still with a dry engine. Volvo's seals are made to last and will do so with the slight negative crankcase pressure created by this.
    Good advice.

    Hey ya, where do you get that strut bar brace? (not sure of the name), the green one. Totally agree on the pvc system, also check the egr if your car has one. Most modern cars have a similar issue. The systems that reduce pollution do so by trapping all that nasty stuff in the car as a opposed to spitting out into the air. Volvo was really ahead of it's time with these. Another thing to check is that the path to the evap canister is free from restrictions.

    Do you think it could be the same issue on a 2.5 straight six 960? Obviously it's a whole different engine.
    But there's a person thats selling a gorgeus 960 near where i live but he says it's and i quote "Sweating oil"
    I figure it's an easy job to just replace the top block gasket but i was wondering if there's a possibility it's something else.
    EDIT!: Ended up buying a 945 b230fk with m90 box and its dripping oil very slowly and very minimally from somewhere in the engine space. We took out the oil return pipe from the turbo and put some new gasket and tape to properly seal it but it seems that wasn't it. Search continues

    • @user-hz3wj6pd7j
      @user-hz3wj6pd7j Před 5 lety

      The valve of some kind is easily removed. Take a 22 mm spanner and just loosen the two nuts retaining the metal pipework. The top mounted pipe is secured to the inlet manifold, remove the 2 10mm bolts securing this to the manifold. Then continue to remove the 22mm nuts, the metal pipes will ease away, careful not to loose the olives and small gasket at the inlet manifold. A 24mm nut hold the valve in its retaining cradle, remove this and the valve can be left gently supported by the 6mm rubber hose. You now have access to the breather box bolts that also secure the valve cradle. 10mm bolts may also be securing a section of wire harness to the cradle, its best to remove these at the same time.

    • @rickyjaypeterson4704
      @rickyjaypeterson4704 Před 4 lety

      Hey, 3 months old but thought I respond with my results. I had to go the hard way. My Oil return hose ( line off the PCV into the block) totally disinegrated, it was clogged, corroded and in several peices. This video is on point good stuff for sure. I had no choice but to use the WWW.CLEANFLAMETRAP.COM Method. Dropped front end, IN engine bay hoist, Dropped oil pan, sump screen totally obscured by plastic hose peices. Flushed oil system 5 times. Installed entire new system, reassembled, including busted motor not otherwise identified. Oiled her up, ran SEAFORM thru due the 387K Odometer read. Having concluded no one had ever serviced the PCV. Car History 1993-1998 Car was Volvo lease to Co. 1 driver who buaght it at 5yrs old (50kmiles) from Volvo Leasing as he was the OG drive and continued until I (with 2 college age kids late 90's, I'm no delusional on who drove it)I buaght her in May 2020. So serviced same place 27 yrs. No record of this service. I go at length becuase no one ever goes that far to ensure the bottom end of this system is clear and the possible irreversible damage. If nothing else this is a cautionary tail, and a testament to the 230B durability. Prior to repair replacement I drove 1100 miles 15 hrs straight from point of purchase home. BTW, I did finde service records that the shop recommend 20/50 wgt oil. I do not!, I still have the "snail" trail and I am doing the front & back seals, timing belt asap. I'd rather have a small leak then a clogged system for now. Good luck.
