How to find your BitLocker recovery key | Microsoft

  • If your system is asking you for your BitLocker recovery key, BitLocker likely ensured that a recovery key was safely backed up prior to activating protection. There are several places that your recovery key may be, depending on the choice that was made when activating BitLocker. This video is designed to help you find your BitLocker recovery key.
    If you are unable to locate the BitLocker recovery key and can't revert any configuration change that might have caused it to be required, you’ll need to reset your device using one of the Windows recovery options. Resetting your device will remove all of your files.

    I have very important files in my HP Laptop and they will be gone forever.
    I can't find the Bitlocker key because Windows was already installed in the laptop when I bought it on Best Buy. They don't have it neither. Whoever in Microsoft have think this was a smart idea... (lock off everything after an update)... should receive a Gold medal for stupidity.

      What you should do is run your files through a decryption algorithm, and then once you get your files switch to linux

    Absolute garbage if we’re being completely honest. Just had to factory reset my PC and now will have to manually reinstall and reactivate every app I was using. Forget the countless important files I for sure lost due to a Windows update fault.
    How about getting the user to be aware of this security key and to have them save it somewhere when they FIRST set up their device instead of them being unable to locate something they never set up themselves to begin with.
    and looking around online, this exact issue has been around as early as /018 from what I could find.
    Unbelievable

    Completely useless….got an exam tomorrow and I’m locked out of my laptop which had all my notes.
    Asking for some useless bit locker key which I never even turned on or heard of….went to the Microsoft account connected to my laptop says there’s no bit locker key. Thank you Microsoft for helping in failing me in my exam

    Entering the bitlocker key in Windows recovery just says it can't unlock the drive. Third time bitlocker has locked me out on three separate computers.

    hey Microsoft, the bit-locker screen is appeared on my PC, but i can't reach the sites you have indicated, it always responds as not available page. if I can't load the page how can I get the key?
    Before you ask, it's my personal account and it requires the "myrecoverykey" page. Also, all the links you have send in this comment section are down. Can you please remove this feature or at least make it optional, because this is really wasting so much of our time here.

      lol. I just had to format my Dell XPS 13 b/c of this same issue 😂. Lost all kinds of valuable info . Should have gotten a MacBook and I will never purchase any other windows computer or anything windows at all! Horrible company since bill gates sold it.

      Buddy putting this in a CZcams comment section is like the least optimal way of making MICROSOFT see it, the company known to not listen to their consumers at all
      you'd need to make a petition, get about a million signatures, write a letter to them everyday, and have a divine intervention to be able to get them to do jack shit about it.

      Ya gotta reformat the drive, not even sure you could get into in safe mode. Forgot my password and MS says it's not the recovery key for this drive which is strange because it's the only external drive I have encrypted with bitlocker. I opened it in 2020 but have no idea what the password is now

    I have been trying so many things to get past the Bitlocker screen. I even went into cmd and used the command to search for my recovery password, however all it shows is my ID and that is it. I got this computer not too long ago, and now I need it more than ever for school. Is there a way I can be given a password or am I just stuck this way?

Your BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password that can be used to unlock your system. Aside from your Microsoft account, there are several places that your recovery key may be, depending on the type of sign-in to Windows.
      The following are the only places where a key can be located.
      * Saved to a Microsoft Account (MSA)
      * Saved to Azure AD
      * Saved to Active Directory
      * Printed (physically or in a pdf)
      * Saved to a file

    This video did not help however I kept mucking around and was able to get a recovery key in the system at first it was saying I cannot log in with personal account I have to use business or school and I have nither. Dont know what I did for the computer itself to let me access one but it did fingers crossed it works.

    To recap, if you can't boot into windows and you don't have your recovery key, wipe the hard drive and lose all of your data.

    help! I bought a secondhand laptop and someone else is logged in. I tried the factory reset and using my key id but it does not match since the original owner is still logged in and it’s probably their recovery key id listed. How do I factory reset the laptop since I now have ownership? Ps I do not have contact w the original owner.

    I am unable toh start my laptop windows 11 because it's asking for bitlocker recovery key.
    To get my recovery key, I do not remember my Microsoft account password.
    I tried lots of times to do forget password, but it didn't work. I made that account at the time of installation windows and never used it after that.
    So what should I do? pls help it's urgent

    I can't access my computer without my Bitlocker key. When I access my Microsoft account to recover the key, the page has an error with a melting popsicle saying to try again later.

    Hatts off really... I had this issue and i called my IT guy. He said if you dont remember the key then your data will be lost and new windows will be installed. I watched this video and i had the key. Thanks a lot. This video is really helpful.

    just today I installed new Windows 11 on my sister's laptop, during the installation process, it’s asked to connect to Wi-Fi, after that it won’t give me an option to sign in with local Account. I thought it might be ok just sign into my Microsoft account. Then after setup done all of her drive automatically locked with bit locker. I’m sure that it’s not enabled before setup new windows. And now her drive D is full of documents and asked for recovery key while I never enabled it. It auto enables bit locker as It's on my laptop signed in my Microsoft account is enabled bit locker. I did check on my Microsoft account and I didn't see the recovery. Is there any way to unlock it?

    Please help me. I have tried booting my computer but it is locked. I checked the BitLocker keys and none of them works (there is 3 of them).
    Also the displayed recovery key ID does not match any one in that page, as well as the date displayed in the drive label; it is more recent than any date of the keys in the page.
    Please help me I need to use my computer urgently.
    Edit: Trying the most recent one, it loads for a bit then says "Failed to unlock with this recovery key"

      My device is locked and asks for a BitLocker key. I have tried getting my key through Microsoft Account but it shows an error saying “something happened wait for some time if the issue persists then contact us”. I have contacted customer support but issue was not resolved and they suggested to wait more even after days the issue is not resolved.       We have tried to find the key in Microsoft account through different different internet servers so network issue was not a problem, they also checked if my one drive was active and I had stable network, after confirming on these we again checked for key in my Microsoft account and it still showed the same error page saying “something happened……”@@MicrosoftCustomerSupport

For now, here are the workarounds you can do: Please take note that you should try following them in order, and if the first one doesn't work, proceed to the next one:
      1. Try accessing the recovery key at msft.it/60599gPSV.
      2. Try accessing the link on a different device, such as a phone, laptop, or desktop.
      3. Try accessing the link on different browsers like Chrome, Edge, etc.
      4. We suggest waiting 24-58 hours and trying again because of possible Microsoft Account Server issues.
      5. Try to connect to a different internet connection, like mobile data.

    My Microsoft account got deleted bc my dad died and that was his account so I can’t find my bitlocker recovery key and can’t get in to my £1500 laptop please I need help

    I hate this because I am not able to log into my device and you are also taking one month for just updating the recovery whyyy ???? Why ?????
    This is not fair I have exams and I have to study from laptop how will be I am going to code and attend all things If I am not able to get bit recovery key

    I've not been able to access my laptop for 3 days currently with Microsoft support and been there for many hours and now have to buy a thumb drive just to access the laptop because of this stupid thing.
