In this video I teach you how to import and edit an STL file in FreeCAD. Editing an .STL file is often useful when you need to make minor changes to an already existing model. This will allow you to import STL's from places such as Thingiverse and GrabCAD. I highly recommend you watch my previous videos in the 'FreeCAD For Beginners' series before watching this one.

So I have found that this method doesn't work. I have an STL I want to edit but I get an error message that says multiple solids whenever I try to make a hole or pad.
In newer versions (using 0.19 currently) the "Part" menu is all changed up, "Refine shape" is now under "Create a copy" in that menu. Was about to just install v18 so I could follow the tutorial!
Thank you for this!!!!
Thanks!
Same for v0.20.2
Thank you so much!
And also I don't think you can delete the (solid) after making the refine copy, it'll ask if you want to break the link, and breaking the link causes issues for me. But after creating the body, they are greyed out, so its all good i think.
I realized that in 0.19 version you have to go:
PART-> CREATE COPY -> REFINE SHAPE
then
PART-> CREATE COPY -> simple copy
then you created a solid and can continue this video
Thank you
Mr. hardwareguy: I don't know how often you check these comments being the age of these tutorials, with that said I have a high and quick learning curve for the most part and must say your method of teaching these are not only easy to follow but probably the most simplest to understand of any tutorials out there on any platform. (Not just FreeCad) but any Cad Programs in general. I wanted to take the time to thank you for your time and hope you continue in your endeavors to help others. Again Thanks.
I wish I found this 2 months ago. There’s a reason why this tutorial doesn’t have any dislikes atm, it’s straight to the point and exactly what I was looking for
They don't show Dislikes anymore on CZcams! Check any page and you'll see there is nothing next to any thumbdown icons anywhere on CZcams anymore. I agree though, this video is straight to the point.
@@h4x0rm1k35 the comment is 2 years old man dislikes were a thing back then
Fantastic video. Solved my problem with an STL I downloaded that wouldn’t print properly.
Thank you. With your help I was able to modify an STL file.
At last ! A proper tutorial. That made sense to this old fella. There's a load of cr*p out there but this was great. Thank you. I Liked & Subscribed. Jim
Great tutorial. Your two basic tutorials already helped me from absolutely being unable to design anything to making decent designs but i see there is still a whole freecad world to discover
Wow. You just explained to me something I have been really struggling with. I've watched several other tutorials, but none of them explained it as easily and quickly as yours. THANK YOU!🙂
great tutorials, loving the pace and topic coverage so far
Thank you for explaining this in a clear and concise way. Your time and effort is much appreciated.
Brilliant tutorial, exceptionally well presented!
Thank you once again. I'm enjoying your lessons so much, and learning loads.
Great! Thank you for taking the time to show this nice, quick and simple, great content
Clear, and concise without waffle - excellent video thank you :D subscribed
This was exactly what I needed and it got straight to the point, thanks mate!
Exactly what I needed, thanks. Ofcourse there are tons more options but this shows me the tools I need and I can work from there.
in version .19 the only way to refine shape is to click part->create copy->refine shape. which created a copy dependent on the original object. so you cant delete the original solid shape like in your video. I don't know if this will cause problems I'm brand new to this.
they just moved it ...odd i had the same issue ...
yes here in 2022 you should not delete the original.
Awesome, quick, to the point tutorial. Thanks man!
Video was AWESOME, thank you so much.
I´m not just talking about what i learned, i am talking about the way u´ve presented it.
it was quick, straight to the topic and the soul, without any gubbergibber that many used to prolong the video and without add.
LOVED IT, please keep it comming, specially with such dirrect and dedicated videos to certain and specific topic.
Thanks. Perfect. Needed to get rid of those triangles to allow correct selection of bolt holes. (kept selecting complete adjacent triangles)
Absolutely brilliant video !! Single best instructor I have come across in this cad software package. This ties everything together
You're very welcome!
My updated version of FreeCad has moved "Refine Shape" (~1:55) option to a submenu. Part -> Create a Copy - Refine Shape. Thanks for the awesome video!
Thank you, this is a short and objective video, shows exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for making this series, has helped so much
clear and to the point - excellent tutorial style
Great video. It is pretty amazing that an open source software like FreeCAD exists and is so powerful.
Brilliant video which explains this very well. The first time I tried this FreeCAD could not convert my Mesh to a solid, and gave me the error message ".. because shape is not a shell" any ideas please?
Thanks for such a concise tutorial!
thanks so much, I could never remember the order of steps, now I have written them down after watching your video for the third time!
Very nice video! Thank for sharing.
I'm only 2-3 episodes in and this is my first time working with a Cad program. By far the best tutorial I've ever watched. I've learned so much in a short amount of time, so I highly recommend this series if you have any doubts. He explains perfectly and shows exactly what to do. I Created a tutorial file to follow him exactly and run through the motions in real time. Amazing work.
Thank you for this series, really usefull!
Best tutorial I have seen in a while, makes sense that there are no dislikes
Thank you for making this FreeCAD series. It is very helpful for a FreeCAD newb like myself.
You're very welcome! thanks for watching
Excellent tutorial
Wow, simple and mostly great
Thanks for sharing your great work :-)
Big thank you - I was trying to figure out how to do this!!
Another great video. Thank you.
Recently found your tutorials and I like that they are fast moving, and to the point. We can always pause and repeat a section to understand it better. They have filled holes that I have had trying to get on top of this powerful software. That said, after managing to draw a fairly complex (for me) item, I'm getting lost trying to convert it to a single item and create a .stl file that I can use. I would ask for a tutorial on mastering the tree. I seem to get stuck there more than anywhere else. Following a tutorial goes well, but as soon as I go off script with my own design, finding my way through the tree effectively gets me into trouble. I suspect that my weak understanding of the different interrelations is creating the challenge. I have created a file that looks correct, but must not be functionally right, thus, I can't create the mesh and then a .stl. I appreciate the hard work you're putting in, very helpful.
Excellent, I've screwed around for nearly 2-weeks with trying to "correctly" modify a intake duct for a quad drone called a Cvatar Cinewhoop. I've wanted to Narrow the inside Diameter of the duct so it's right up to the propeller blade tip to increase the efficiency and lower the noise signature. Now, If I've properly save it. Then I'll head to the slicer and then print it on my Creality CR-6 SE.
Excellent!
My dude you are killing it. It's like you know all the cad problems I'm having. Are you stalking me?
Great stuff. Your explanations are simply great!
Much appreciated!
short and on point! thx
Thank you for this tutorial!!
This is great! Thanks!
Dude, your tutorials are exactly how a tutorial should be! Helped me a lot already!
You're most welcome, Nick. Thanks for watching!
I have been struggling with trying to make this work following your video, and always seem to come unstuck when I get to the actually editing of the resulting conversion. I finally realised the crucial step was to make a new body having highlighted the conversion.. Many thanks for your videos - to the point.
exactly what i want to do right now
thank you so much
thank you so much!
Thank you!
Awesome. Subbed. ❤
Please make more FreeCAD tutorial videos, you are very thorough and make great tutorials
I was so baffled, thank you.
AWESOME
Perfect tutorial.
Thank you so much for this, you made my day way easier 😀
You’re welcome, all the best with your projects! what are you working on?
As a beginner thank you !!!!!!!!
massive thanks !
Great !!!
You beautiful man. Saved me so much time.
Thank you 😊
Merci un video claire et court tu meriterai 2 pouce bleu.
Brilliant thanks
Thanks
Your awesome thanks!!
Keep it up, this is magic. ;-)
Thank you for that
Very good tutorial I would love to see one on how to fill in voids on a part
Hi ! Thanks a Lot for this :)
you're the best
hello there, thank you very much for these Beginner Videos! I have a question, how can i edit a "Solid" shape?
That's the first time I've been able to follow a tutorial on importing and manipulating STL files in FreeCad. Many, many, thanks.
Just one thing though... in the FreeCad documentation they advise using the mesh design tool immediately after importing the STL file, and analysing the mesh to make sure it's properly constrained before going any further with manipulating it. Do you think this is wise?
Thanks!
Thank you so much. That is very kind of you!
@@thehardwareguyno problem - this was a HUGE help for totally revising a part that I only had an STL file of.
cool
looked at a lot of Freecad Videos... Yours are exceptionally good.. thanks very much... looking forward to more of them :)
Awesome, thank you!
How can I set the centre of the axes for sketcher on the middle of the stl?
wow it looks like blender but actually usable with common sense names for tools and whatnot. im gonna try it out.
also thank you for a tutorial that uses a file of something that we would create, if i watched one more blender tutorial that used a damn cube, id punch my monitors, and i love my monitors and wouldnt hurt them for the world, but yes id knock them into monitor oblivion
At around 3:00 mark in video why do you use Pocket to make holes verses using the Hole tool?
Cool
Delicious.
Gold morning I want to know which software to use when I finish designing to create a g-code for my 3018 cnc machine
Thank You for your excellent training course. I am at this Pt.3 episode. I have a model (a camera grip, actually) and when I get to 'refine shape', it completes, but when I try to delete the previous action I get the message "the following referencing objects might break". any thoughts. (maybe if it is not created in freecad, this may occur?) regards
Can those first few steps be recorded into a macro? I expect this is something that I might haver to do a lot.
I watched your Fusion video of this where you talked about how you show how to do the same thing in FreeCad... Well, I still see the mesh on the rounded parts of the step file in this video, so what video is it where you show how to make it all without the mesh faces like Fusion gives you in the paid version?
How on earth can nearly three thousand folk watch this and only 196 be bothered to hit like ,,, hardly fair.
Hej is it possible to go from stl file into gcode that could be used in cnc machine? thank you
How could we edit original area? like remove the clamp or close a hole?
can we do the same thing in solidedge?
Gold
I want to edit a hole size in a stl and have followed your tutorial but cannot select the hole or circle on the face in order to edit it?
Can you also do something like this with a 3D scan? We have some rather sluggish STL files of the machines we work with.
Almost unusable. A cleanup like this to a surface model would be nice
Hey I love your videos but I am having an issue with an STL file I am trying to work on I can't seem to get FreeCad to make it a mesh file and I also am having issues with it in fusion 360 is there anyway I can ask you to take a look at it?
Did you make that video on how to convert STL to STEP in freecad?
By my model it gets stuck with creat ik nog the solid. My error is: cannot convert "project" because Shape is not a Shell.
What must I do now?
Nice tutorial. But somehow not able to select any surface after a body was created. It that not all stl file can be edited in free and? I am using v0.18
Hello! I'm trying to edit an STL file i made in another 3d modeling program. I want to chamfer some of the edges but it keeps making the entire part vanish.
great video as always but one problem. I've followed all of the steps up to the refine shape action. If I click on the parts drop down menu there is no refine shape function. Do you know why? to my knowledge I have the latest version of free cad
I just had the same issue and managed to find it. For some reason it is a sub-entry under the "create a copy" entry on the parts drop down menu.
@@luukpaulussen3335 I found it there but it was greyed out for me. Lovely program.
