  • Building a DIY arduino/raspberry pi/beaglebone black smart cat feeder for less than $15, we will need:
    - 2 cans
    - MG996 servo motor
    - zip ties
    - thick wire
    - double bowl
    - piece of styrofoam
    - electric tape
    - arduino or similar microcontroller/microcomputer with PWM support
    - something to cut tin with (knife/scissors/dremel).
    Also it can be a great cat puzzle if you approach it creatively! My cat pushes the button ( • DIY ARDUINO CAT FEEDER... ) and also gets the food from the interactive stream donations ( • PLAY WITH A CAT AND FE... )

    The CNC, expertly milled and drilled, made like a product nerds. And the "this is what I got to work with" nerds.

      Pellet size should be smaller than the gap between the cans. So it doesn't help if there's no gap in between or if the pieces are too small. The cans themselves have a lip that help to create this gap.

    The basic program runs while the arduino board is USB-cable plugged to my laptop. When I unplug it and power the arduino with power 5V-2A, the board switches on but the code doesn't execute. I use only one power outlet for arduino uno rev 3 board and the servo motor mg996R is powered with the 5V/GND pin of the arduino board. Is the issue the powering stuff ?

    • @quentingourier4883
      @quentingourier4883 Před 4 měsíci

      Also, I was thinking, is a good thing to just replace the unique power outlet I use with a 12V?

    • @HungrysitesRu
      @HungrysitesRu Před 4 měsíci

      How do you know that the code doesn't execute? You can upload a blink example to see if it blinks with LED. Maybe it does execute but 5V isn't enough for your servo? It happens. You can replace with 12V but it's too much for the servo and the internal converter of arduino could be too small to give enough amps to the servo. How do you connect your 5V to the board, with USB or with barrel connector? You should use USB.

    • @quentingourier4883
      @quentingourier4883 Před 4 měsíci

      I use the barrel connector to power the board and I don't use any daughter board to power the servo. The servo is directly plugged to the 5v pin of the arduino board. I do know that the code doesn't execute completely because it does a rotation but it stops and doesn't rotate back as I wrote in my program. Maybe there's not enough current or there can be drops too? I'll try same thing but with the usb powering way and I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

    • @HungrysitesRu
      @HungrysitesRu Před 4 měsíci

      @@quentingourier4883 if you use a 5v barrel into a 12v port and then try to take 5v from the board after regulator, that's the issue. You should connect 5v barrel directly to the 5v on the board. Or the easier hacky way is to bridge vin and 5v.

    Pretty clever. But two problems to solve. First cat treats are junk food. That is way too many cat treats to be giving your cat in one sitting... Second, portion control. The amount of cat food that comes out is going to vary significantly per feeding. Leading to a very pissed off cat on days when he gets under fed everytime, and a cat throwing up extra food on the days he gets too much. There needs to be a way to better control the proportion of food. BTW. My cats have been known to climb into the cub board and get the dog to open the screwtop so they can all enjoy cat treats.... The cat treat dispenser would not last long.

      I don't. You need to learn how to debug these things, check the code, test the electronics with multimeter/osciliscope, try another servo, try another arduino, try changing wires, check that there's a connection between the endpoints and the resistance is low, check your power supply, check the specs of the motor and if there's enough power for it. You have to put in a lot of time until it becomes effortless.

      I'm pretty sure 1.5kg servo isn't enough. 5v is minimum, it's better to have 5.5-6v. See another video on this channel about 3d printed cat feeder, battery-powered version should be heavily optimised.

      Smaller food pieces or larger hole. If it doesn't open enough - increase the time of it opening. If even that doesn't help you can shake the can in the open position with the servo in you code. Maybe your servo or power supply is a bit different so it could move slightly slower, try to increase opening time.

      ErdosainNueve ledPin is a default 13 pin. I don't like it light up. You can remove the code without any other consequences. You have probably removed the buttonPin code as well so the internal pullup resistor doesn't work and the motor starts moving because of the noise on the buttonPin.

I would better choose esp8266 (wemos d1, esp-12) and wifi but you can choose any wireless board you like though it should have PWM and be programmable with arduino ide (maybe just arduino+bluetooth module). If you have any specific issues that google could not resolve for you let me know. But I can't just spend 5 hours to make it happen, you need to put at least some work first.
      1. choose the electronic components and buy them (google like "arduino bluetooth module" or "wemos d1")
      2. program it (google like "how to upload code arduino ide wemos d1", "evothings", "nodemcu"), open my code, understand it, use parts of it for your needs

    Hi, Thank you very much for this great tutorial.
    I finished mine and works great ( expecting my cat will learn how to use it ;-) )
    I just have a question : At the beginning you have an automatic version with star wars music announcing the meal :-)
    Have you got a breadboard layout sheet and the code for that one? I would use it to train my cat with the noise :-)
    Thank you

      Hi Ybann! It was javascript code with beaglebone black single board computer so you can't use this code for a microcontroller. But you can google for "arduino melody" for that. I.e. www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/melody gist.github.com/nicksort/4736535

      You should probably search for some basic arduino programming example. It's pretty obvious how to connect USB to the USB port and how to press the upload button in the arduino app.

    So, I actually have been working on something similar to this.... my problem was the -dispenser- part. I have a weight sensor module and that actuates the servo, but the serving of food I have had issues with getting it to be.... precise? I can measure it, but the latch containing the amount of food wouldn't be the correct weight.... so thanks :) this is a big help. (i am trying to build a food habit databank, how he eats at a time, frequency of eating, same for water... he is on a diet :( )

    Hm. I'm going out of town for 10 days; have 5 cats.. How large of a container could this effectively rotate to feed, and can I make a webpage, or something for my phone that would allow me to operate it over internet?

    • @HungrysitesRu
      @HungrysitesRu Před 6 lety +1

      I haven't tested it but I'm pretty sure that it's too much for one servo of this kind (you need at least 7 times more volume). You can scale it building multiple feeders or customising the design, maybe using static upper container with narrow bottleneck (like 5kg protein plastic jar) and just rotating the disk with a hole.
      As for the phone - I see a lot of instructables using IFTTT service for this purpose but you will still need to customise the code for that. I would probably use ESP-12E board to control that, I made a mining-rig-hardware-remote-rebooter using it.

    • @adriennschmidt8210
      @adriennschmidt8210 Před 4 lety

      You must be kidding. This is cruel and irresponsible. It can go wrong anytime with the feeder, eg. food can get stucked or the cat figures out on the first day how to open it. Your cats need company and love, not only food. I hope animal welfare services will find you soon......

    Hey man! Love your video & ideas so much! i want to use this as my school project. I've wired my circuit and it should be fine, but unfortunately i've been confused about the coding in arduino(im using arduino Uno R3) and coding for the RTC(PCF8563T). I've confused about, how to code the arduino to set timer using RTC and rotate the servo at the specific time i want my cat to be feed. So hopefully you can help me with my coding for arduino, rtc and servo. Thanks Man!

    • @MomWillBeProud
      @MomWillBeProud  Před 4 lety +1

      gist.github.com/ulitiy/c4004eeee65254efb7fcfb450cb1a969 see the code here, it uses RtcDS1302. If you want to use my code you should replace your RTC with the compatible module. I recommend DS3231 with github.com/Makuna/Rtc. If you want to use yours you have to find some examples/libraries on your own. Google for PCF8563T arduino library, most of them have example code inside.
