Peyton was the sweetest dude. My friend was stationed in Hawaii for the Navy. They got treated to the NFL All Star game. While the players were leaving the stadium, fans stood out and asked for autographs and pics. My friend said all the players just walked by and ignored the fans. He then said Peyton got on the players bus, closed the door and you could here Peyton chewing out all the other players about ignoring the fans. He then opened the bus door and all the players came out and took pics and signed autographs because Peyton told them to.

I took up running when I was 29 years old. I had ran some track in high school. But I got Married when I was 21! I had built my first home in 1989. I decided to take up running again. I worked from 3:30 in the afternoon to 11:30 at night. I did this for 21 straight years. I started running a quarter of a block at a time. I read how to train myself to run not jog! As time went by I could run farther and farther. Remember I started at 29. I ran all over the town and out in the country for hours looking for places to improve my abilities for strength and stamina. I found many a hill in the area to train. Once while watching Walter Payton run the hill from hell. I realized this was the way to train and train hard to get better quick. So I would warm up by running in town for 3 miles then head out to the hills from hell! A five mile course of repeated hills over and over. I crossed train with weights and a bike riding. By the time I was 35. I was running mini marathons and marathons. I even got into Bi- Athons. Bike riding and running events. 6'3 and 185 packed pounds. The fastest I rode Bike was 41 mph. When I was 37 years old. I still could run a 5 minute mile. I never won any races or trophies. But I challenged my self just like Walter Payton. He was my hero! Time has came and went! I am 58 years old now. I have had two hearts attacks. But for one brief shining moment I trained just like Walter Payton. I believe if I hadn't I would be dead now! I was able to walk 2.5 miles at a time. 3 days after receiving 2 stents in my right artery. Thanks to ! Walter Payton. R.I.P. My Friend. Shawn

I lived in the area at the time Payton was training on the hill. I remember thinking it would be cool to catch him training there, but then thought it better to leave him alone. Never did actually take the time to look it up, though, but he was just absolutely awesome. Should have checked it out.

Random but what separated players such as Ray Lewis, Walter Payton, Ladainian Tomlinson and Jerry Rice from all the other greats was not their athleticism or stats and awards. I think it was just their insane work ethic, drive and discipline to be the greatest they could be at their position. Makes sense how all of the players listed lasted so long in the NFL because they took care of themselves.

My uncle worked in the Bears front office in the 80s. He told me a story of walking down a hallway one day and someone coming up behind and wrapping him in a bear hug. It was Payton playing a joke. My uncle is a strong guy, about 250 lbs and a former player himself in college. He was completely unable to move a muscle, like he was shackled. He said it was the most helpless feeling and of course Walter let go and they both had a laugh. He always spoke very well of Walter Payton and liked him very much.

I can vouch for what he has said. He just gave you guys the secret to developing speed. It's in the calf and thigh muscles. Running hills force you to run on your tip toes or else fall backwards. What he said as far as not being able to walk... hit that hill in my grandmother's backyard about ten times. It's 60 yards longer with an approximate 65 degree incline... call me in the morning... if you can lol
