If you enjoyed this build with Adam Savage and Laura Kampf, watch them build a (very) over-engineered bottle opener! czcams.com/video/MxLOoriXkMc/video.html
Adam Savage’s Tested is Adam a Rolex man? :D
Adam, you should recreate the co-star's hat. So instead of just a pencil, integrate some other things.
This is my favorite with these two. Adam took over the bottle opener video. It wasn’t near the collaboration that this one was💕
I’m sorry I don’t wanna drag the creativity of your channel down, and I love your ability to collaborate and make something new but like you literally could have milled some holes in a 4x4 that fits the handle of these dispensers. It accomplishes the same goal, in the sense you want to take the roll with you and be able to dispense tape one handed. I feel like it’s a little bit of over thinking to disassemble the tape dispenser when you could mill a few oblong holes in a nice piece of wood and stick the dispenser handle in them and if you want to take them with you just remove the dispenser, it also lends itself well to being built into a vertical orientation. Kind of an Occam’s razor type thing, But then you wouldn’t have a video so idk I’m sort of torn between the simple solution and the free form creative spirit you foster in this video... honestly I’m slightly envious and a little bit baffled by your ability to see another idea as a contribution to the final product and not an obstacle to your vision, your ability to design around another persons work is awe inspiring (it would definitley frustrate me to not have a plan before it’s executed...to just go and make it, I could do it alone no problem but each with a different part, the way you riff off each other it’s awesome)
I know some time has passend and with all the Covit it was and may be still is impossible, but: Adam, when will you visit Laura in Köln?
I love how Adam literally has everything in his shop. "So we're gonna need some plutonium" *Adam pats belly like a drum* "Right, ok here it is." Haha.
Greatest thing ever - I can't help but smile every time he pats his belly XD
Adam uses a special echo location technique, different areas of his belly are tuned to locate specific items. His tongue receives the vibrations, hence his subtle but quirky facial gestures.
time stamps for belly pats?
@20:16 was one. the search for angle iron.
Ryan Carlton 😂😂😂
His shop is the physical embodiment of "well, i might need that later for some reason"
TheR3aper5 my life in a nutshell
Productive hoarding
for real tho
May.
Isn't that the one of the general thoughts behind all shops?
The part where Adam says "Oh wait! I have the perfect thing for this!" and runs away to an exact point in his shop makes me realize that I REALLY want to see him do a project with James May. They would have the most perfect and well organized creative bromance.
Adam Savage is like the Bob Ross of props and custom builds, just so relaxing and satisfying.
I'm watching two people make a tape dispenser, and I'm completely fascinated.
Two people from different sides of the Atlantic Ocean, brought together by a planet-wide information network, meeting thanks to a common interest and joining forces to solve a problem that was bugging them. We live in an awesome age!
Cool but........Take a piece of wood, cut a hole in it, put the tape dispenser handle in the hole and voila!
For 38 minutes! Without skipping forward! (not counting in-video edits)
ImpatientTurtle It's fascinating to see how people bounce ideas off each other. Two people, two different minds, but the same goal. And I love seeing how people react to Adam's shop
It made me want to see the unedited version ...
"Hmmm, we're going to need rare ivory from an albino Elephant that is found only in the remote regions of Madagascar and went extinct in the 19th century....I have some in the back"
kalloused I don't usually reply to comments or even make a comment myself. But your joke me me laugh very hard and unexpectedly. The joke kept getting better and better and the punchline was just a killer. Good job with that one.
kalloused "oh! Wait! I have some of that that i found on safari while investigating how to add realism to Hollywood set jungle scenes!!!"
A workshop like that is so amazing. It's a dream
kalloused hahaha too true
The material was delrin. Pretty common in a shop.
I never thought I would enjoy watching people make a tape dispenser
Laura has the best suggestions for builds. They’re always practical and awesome. It’s fun to see props, but they’re not really functional (guns, etc.). With these, it’s easy to see how well the things do what they’re supposed to. And Adam’s and Laura’s ingenuity is on proud display. Thanks for bringing us these collaborations!
Tested: the only show that can make a 40 minute tape dispenser build interesting.
What wonderful shop porn. I could (and often DO...) watch this sort of stuff non-stop. My other go-to is the wonderful How It's Made series. Unnnngggghhhh... When I used to work in my shop more often I'd spend as much or more time making the stuff to make the stuff, than making the stuff itself. A good jig or tool holder is a thing of beauty.
It's all Adam really, the enthusiasm and system of working.
Agreed. When I saw the title I thought it would be interesting. Then I saw that it was nearly 40 minutes and thought maybe I'll just skip over a few parts. I was pleasantly surprised y how engaging he makes his one day build videos.
Adam's one day builds are some of my favorite shit on the internet
I could watch him work all day
If you like his stuff check out Jimmy Diresta and Matthias Wandel.
Matthias Wandel FTW Boiiiiiii
An amazing woodworker is Frank Howarth.

I hands so enjoyed watching you two explaining complex concepts halfway to eachother and then stop explaining because you both understand the complete idea. I'm sure it makes the whole process of working together a joy.
Laura: We could do this?
Adam: OH I HAVE THE PERFECT THING
bob the builder: "yes we ca... nvm you already figured it out"
Hello my frosty brother/sister
BROTHER?!?!?! SISTER?!?!?!?! I HAVE ONE?!?!?!?
Indigofrost you do now :D
lol, cdn.meme.am/cache/instances/folder854/26073854.jpg
I'm watching two people engineer a tape dispensing problem that I will never have... and I'm enjoying every minute. Thank you Internets!
It's a problem I wished I would have ...
But you _could_ build it ;)
Agreed, I do not expect to have that problem as long as I consider the tape a tool and have it available. What I find wonderful is that two people are working on a need they both have and are adding to the situation. I would be so thrilled to have a like minded person in my shop like this!
Never in a million years could I ever engineer a device like this on the fly and build it, Adam’s knowledge is over the top
Wow, you can see all the light bulbs going off in Adams brain so quickly, pretty amazing at how quick and efficient he is. Also pretty funny how Laura was like "Those numbers mean nothing to me" Coming from the metric system lol.
The most impressive part about this for me was the fact that Adam can draw a straight line completely free handed.
Mathew Schimmenti where :o
marcel helder he was drawing on of the lines during mock up completely free handed
Actually he leans palm or other finger on the wood side.
I use that technique all the time at work.
It's accurate enough.
Used to do it in high school in my carpentry class. It's really not as hard as it seems!
Use sweeping arm motions… search YT for detailed tutorials! Anyone can do it. :D
Adam is the type of guy to reinvent the wheel to make it a little rounder
And fuck it up half way through and not realise till the end.
Love the Mad Scientis vibe that Adam gives off! It's amazing! I can only imagine how they felt building it, but for me watching, I feel like a kid in a candy store. X3
This channel is like 90% filler/sponsored content and 10% gold. These One Day build videos are the gold.
How many people like me, would love to have access to this shop any time we wanted to make something? Holy cow, how cool would that be?!? Adam has everything - including a kitchen sink! I LOVE these videos!
I'm weirdly fascinated by the pencil holder in her cap. That's neat LOL
Made by Ape & Bird, a two person team in Providence RI, awesome products by awesome people www.apenbird.com/
45$ for that cap is pretty expensive, and that's without shipping
Alex cronin you are the real MVP
Austvik Austvik because it's a two person team HAND making these hats. The time spent making each piece, not to mention the expertise they've built in their sewing skills are what make a price go up. That's not even mentioning the money they spend on materials for the product, envelopes/boxes for shipping, and all that jazz.
I knew someone else was thinking this. Thank you for extracting the link from the community.
31:05 I love how Adam brings 5 exacly the same drills with different bits just to save on time XD
Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm when one of them has an idea or makes a suggestion is genuinely infectious, I can't stop grinning watching them both at work!
Adam Savage's shop is a makers paradise!!
This show gives me workshop envy!
Same, and some talent envy too
Laura and Adam in one video! What's not to love! Best regards from Cologne, Germany.
You should be there too... something must be arranged..
My new workshop will soon be completed and I think that I will be able to build some really cool stuff there. Let's hope that it will be a success and then I might be able to make a trip to the US next year :)
The Post Apocalyptic Inventor get AvE along as well!
The 8-ball shows his true colors: he is so unconsciously capable, his intuition allows him to wing it most of the time (which is not true of course; the fact he knows all his materials do well and his experience in pressure cooker situations taught him to work fast and smart, creating room to problem solve).
The way he used his caliper to thumb his way through the tubing is oxymoronically satisfying;-)
Never sure if you ever have time to read your comments Adam. Giving your time to Laura and us by sharing your build. Kudos Adam. Apart from your skills whenever building things, I adore your humility while you do it. All the best from London, UK
Adam and Laura are the only people that could make a half an hour video about tape and still make me so excited to watch
She was like: What the fuck is an inch
Laura speaks for all europeans XD
And scientist, even in america :D
And next time : 1 inch = +/- 2,54 cm ...
only +, not -
Lol, not + either. The definition of an inch is exactly 2.54 cm.
“Not the tape measure, what’s the name of, like... a stick measure?”
I like that better than ruler.
The trade term for what she has is actually a stick rule
I don't know why but hearing Adam work in his shop without saying a word is the most calming and satisfying thing ever. It's like ASMR but not terrible.
Adam has more space for tape than others have for all their tools!
Than*
But, yeah, that's funny.
Yes, but to be fair he has more tools than most of us too.
He's got more space for tools than some have for living!
His shop could probably put a lot of hardware stores to shame.
Ever go to a store for a bearing and they pull a tackle box out?
more likely you go to the store for a bearing and they look at you like you don't know what you're talking about before they send you to the mom and pop hardware store across town.
I know Adam won't read comments but might help others looking to do something similar.
For the blade a really easy place to get them is on the glad wrap dispensers, you get a footlong blade on the side of a cheap box.
Yea but quite as sturdy as these. I watching this closely because O use a lot of tape but just use large desktop type dispensers from 3M.
Cost money though. You can affix these blades to something to make them a bit more rigid.
The tape holder (the grey plastic thing they cut up) could easily and more cheaply be made from MDF.
NM, the serrated blades from the glad / foil wrap boxes could be made stronger by gluing to the blunt side of a used craft blade. Or you could cut sections from a hacksaw blade.
You can also use hacksaw blades and cut them to length with an angle grinder if you need something a little more heavy duty
that is how I made this same thing in art school (my first build I couldn't remove individual rolls easily)
His child-like excitement is just really refreshing... True definition of passion... I want something like that.
That hat! Laura's hat has a pencil holder! I want one!
Is this a common thing and I am way behind the curve, or am I justly blown away?
It is an Etsy product! Here is a link to the store that makes them: www.etsy.com/dk-en/shop/ApeNBird?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=270676395
@@danieljensen5751 thanks for linking that hat I was hoping someone would have asked about it in the comments, totally going to get one of those!
I wanna see colin furze and adam savage in one video, building a battle robot or something!

I love Tested, and especially One Day Builds. I don't know how often comments are read, but I would love to see a One Day Build where Adam does a Lightsaber build, or specifically a lightsaber hilt. Not a replica, but a lightsaber Adam Savage would weild were he a Jedi Knight or a Sith Lord. Can we make this happen?! Please? Keep making!

He just did a proper one

I love how when Adam get excited he does a bit of tummy drumming. 20:21 Hilarious. 😂
I loved your work, guys! It's a pleasure seeing to you both doing your things in the workshop. Cheers from Argentina.
How great. Loved the fact that Adam said okay, you take this apart [9:04] and Laura without thinking reached into her pocket and pulled out a multitool to get started. No hesitation, or anything. Taking things apart is such a fundamental step in our learning and creating process.
It was weird watching her use a ratcheting socket wrench by lifting it off the bolt every turn, though. Very cool video!
what is her hat?!?! i need that hat, a pencil holder?? GENIUS!
my man, thank you
John Harvey do you know what that style of hat is called?
Marc Mol Lous not a clue, sorry
Those are called 5 panels, or 5 panel hats. Because they don't have 6 panels like a traditional baseball cap would have.
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
I love that the portable bandsaw was already plugged in and you didn't have to go unwrap the cord before using it. I've always wrapped it up, even though 99% of the time I use it in the exact same spot. That's fantastic.
Adam's intelligence and enthusiasm is so inspiring and fun to watch.
Sometimes I don't understand what they're talking about, but they laugh, so I laugh.
Laura Kampf + Adam Savage - what a dream team! And they work together even better than I could have imagined. What I'd love to see next is Adam visiting Laura's shop, with them doing a video in her style. If only to see five minutes of Adam working intently without speaking...,
What I admire about Adam's workflow is that he is able to work with literally anybody and make something happen. There are not many people who allow others to interfere with their workflow.
EtwasMartin I just wish he an Jamie could have set aside their differences for loner than they did just so we could have a proper going away season of myth busters
’If its worth doing, its worth overdoing’...

Adam: You sure?

Laura is an absolute joy, most positive vibe ever haha
Again, 1 ad at the start, and then almost 40 min of uninterrupted enjoyment. Thank you, subscribed. This is how to treat an audience !
They work really well together. Fun watching them...hard to explain...also they can work silently together...they have an understanding Adam and Norm will never achieve, simply because they "speak the same language" they create stuff with their hands. Its amazing :)
AnTrAxX Slingshots how did you not see the error of spreak when you edited?
AnTrAxX Slingshots I would love to see them work together again.
AnTrAxX Slingshots Oh dear, I read the signals all wrong. I thought the silence was Adam got caught Alpha-male mansplaining and they were in a huffy fit with each other.
Steve Watts
Wuh, she was smiling 90% of the time -- when talking with Adam or working alone, ha.
MR. SOLID ARISEN I smile thru the tears as my fantasy gets stomped by the jack-boot of rational thought. (Hope you are right)
The tape rolls should be double mounted back to back with a single arm between them. You could fit 4 rolls in the same place.
the idea was that they wanted to take off one roll without having them stick together or needing to get one out of the way, take the one they needed, then put back the one they didn't. an easy way to have more is just to make it more compact and have more arms.
|Mc Chappington| he's got a point though. Imagine one arm with two rolls of tape on either side. It would allow more tape indeed
First, I love how Adam’s favorite description for all different things is a whistle. Second, I love that they used a lock similar to a pocket knife to hold it up.
I know this is an oldie, but it is surely also a goldie. I am watching all in a row and this is by far the best build for me. It is immensely practical and will keep the value for ever.
It's Soooo awesome see you in Adams shop Laura!
thanks justin! i had a VERY VERY fantastic day :)

turning a tape dispenser into a tape dispenser, I LOVE IT!!!
Adams capability to figure out problems on the go always amazes me, and i'm engineer...
It's great how you can see Adam & Laura develop a working rapport & language between them during the build. The lights come on between them both nearly at the same time about 3/4 the way through. ♥ both of you two to bits. :)
I love one day builds so much.
Am I the only one that would love to see Adam collaborate with Jimmy DiResta?
Disturbed Shifty nope. that would be a very interesting collaboration.
Disturbed Shifty be interesting to see ,as Adam seems to want to be the one with the final say 🙃
He would leave his stamps all over Adam's place.
What a power duo!! I love it when these two come together!!
I love these one day build videos, seeing the process start to finish is so inspiring. Even better when you love the builders in the videos.
I love the shot where it starts with Laura on the drill press then pans over to Adam on the disc sander. Reminds me of a quote by the great Michael Scott, "Let's gangbang this thing and go home".

I don't know why, but I so much more enjoy watching videos in which Adam builds practical stands or other things to make building things more than watching him actually make props.
Adam savages favorite phrase:
“I have a tool for that”
DAMN I hope Adam has passed every single tiny bit of knowledge on to at least one other person... the thought that someone with such vast and wide ranging experience will one day retire, or dare I say it (life's only inevitability, besides taxes) pass away, taking all that knowledge with them is scary! This is one reason I love his videos, he's the kind of person who could have made billions by designing niche stuff for professionals that no one else would ever DREAM of making, and yet he just makes cool and useful stuff, and shares it with other people.
“Lifes only inevitably, besides taxes”
Tell that to the soviet union, or north korea
OK.. My life is complete now.. Laura and Adam in the same "One Day Build". Can´t get any better.
Oi! Oi! Oi! i hear you!
wow the thought that goes into this is amazing. from the swinging arm to the handle to carry it off the shelf: AMAZING

More Laura and Adam builds!!!
I find these sorts of builds the most interesting thing to watch with all of their problem solving. Plus they're pretty awesome people.
I enjoy watching Adam make things because I can tell he really enjoys his work. Keep up the good work!
When it comes to building/making stuff, Adam is the high octane God of such...
Simon Keenan now imagine him and jimmy diresta making a project together.
Adam and Laura in one project video? Yes please!
These two are great together. Never before have I seen two people so excited and into building something like a tape dispenser, and never before have I been so entirely entertained by it.
Exactly...I´m watching people build a tape dispenser. And the entire wealth of the internet is a click away. Thats impressive.
That's the thing. The tape dispenser is just a small part of it. Its the thought process, problem solving, creating something that is elegant, functional and services your needs with another person who shares your passion. There are so many light-bulb moments in this video, and that's what makes it great.
ChrisWhite85 Absolutely! I hope that I can achieve that in my design career/videos too 🤞
Totally awesome - I'd like to see you two work together more often!
that's awesome! so intricate yet so simple! worth the full time watching! no doubt about it!
What a delightful duo 😀
David Attenborough: "The nerd mating dance is a long and arduous one. The male nerd shows the potential mate his array of tools and materials. He can tell she is ready for his dance by the donning of her pencil hat. The female nerd is very excited because this mate's showing is one of the largest she has ever seen. A plethora of tools and materials at her beck and call. A truly masterful showing from the older male. It appears this male can meet all of her sensible, seemingly simple, yet complex demands. There is only one stumble, a slight misstep, as the female nerd seems befuddled at his measurement system, but nevertheless he remains true to his dance. The female is so impressed, she joins the male nerd in his dance, and it is quite the beautiful event. This dance is a success, not a surprise from these exceptional specimens, and several hours later a tape dispenser is born."
Kenan Hoffpauir This is the best comment on this video.
Lol
ROTFLMAO! Is it wrong that I read this entire this with Adam doing his David Attenborough voice in my head?
Though seriously you need to tweet this to Adam. I think he'd get a kick out of it.

its so awesome watching him work.
I love seeing Adam collaborate with people. I'm sure Bob, at I Like To Make Stuff, would be ecstatic about a collaboration opportunity. ;-)
I would love to see Jimmy Diresta and Adam do a project!
Friend Palster yes. I would love to see that.
The problem I have with the one day builds, is there is not enough of them, more one more builds
I love how excited Adam gets whenever he's building stuff he's totally in his element.
Man how incredibly cool that we get free content like THIS online.
part of this weren't actually filmed in high speed. That was Adam after 2 red bulls.
Two Red Bulls? To do what? Calm him down a little? ;)
Legend has it they actually slow down these videos so we can see what Adam is doing.
It's magic that you have put up together this beautiful, knowledge sharing channel. Few places have I EVER encountered where creation and sharing is done with such passion, love and enthusiasm. I really love this!
As always, absolutely fascinating! Great stuff, Adam.
You can tell with everything Adam works on that he has a lot of determination and he gets focused until he finishes whatever he's working on. I love DIY or tinker type video's and Adam is one of those people to try and make stuff or figure out better ways for things, love the content and keep up the awesome video's Adam!!
Well I'm never calling it a 'ruler' again. Tape Measure -> Stick Measure. Obviously
I thought she meant a folding ruler but I guess its almost the same ...
She was close as the word derives from the French for "Measuring Stick".
commonly known as a yard-stick... (yup, even if it is in metric)
theorganguy in german a folding ruler is actually called a "zollstock" which translates to "inch stick".
thanks for clearing that up... I'm german myself... the english name for the Zollstock is Yard Stick... literal translations don't always work... and yup, that the name for a metric measuring device has "inch" in it, amuses me also
Love watching the cogs turn in adams brain :) loved the liner lock mechanism they used to keep the arms held up
I liked that ply leaf spring too - didn't see it working at the end though.
That was my only frown moment in the vid. As soon as they said they wanted something to lock the arms up I just thought of a tungsten steel flap/spring (think of a springboard a gymnast uses to leap onto/over the box) mounted to the ply backing that the top corner of the arm would depress when the arm was moved. When the arm was fully up or down the tungsten would be at max open and would hold the arm in place while the action of raising/lowering the arm would depress it. The friction part of the arm - the corner - would be lightly rounded off and shimmed or capped with something that wouldn't wear down or alternatively would promote ease of action ie solid teflon insert or a strip of thin hardened steel bent and screwed into place - use whatever is on hand but all stuff I've worked with before so know it's doable.
Ok, I just spent 38 minutes watching someone build a tape dispenser... And I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I love this video so much because it's taking a problem I didn't even know I had and fixing it handily. Every little flaw has a new gadget to fix it.
Although im sure it would greatly add to the the length of the video, talking more about tools, measurements, math, theories, and overall just more about the engineering process i think would really hit these videos out of the park.
What a great collaboration!
Adam it would be epic for you and Jimmy Diresta to get together on a project as well.
really? i felt it was awkward and they weren't working well bouncing ideas off each other. Granted it probably had more to do with her not being totally fluent in english
Dick Fageroni Why? He creates great content. And has a nice cat.
Please! Get together with Jimmy! Incredible craftman ship!
Diresta and Adam would be great together.
That’d be a clash of geniuses
Watching your design process was a pleasure and educational. I’m glad I found this video today.
