Is Ukraine using an aircraft-imitating missile to confuse Russian defences?

  • Ukraine appears to have used an air-launched decoy weapon in a bid to confuse Russian air defences.
    Images on social media of wreckage in the Russian-held city of Luhansk seemingly also show what appears to be the remains of an ADM-160B MALD (Miniature Air-Launched Decoy).
    The job of the miniature air-launched decoy is to go in ahead of a main aerial attack and confuse enemy air defences by pretending to be an aircraft - anything from a small jet fighter to a bomber.

    New tech, old tactic. Robin Olds, during the Vietnam War, ran Operation Bolo, where his F-4s were imitating F-105s, to lure up MiGs thinking they'd get easy kills. In this case, the F-105 UHF transmitter had a distinctive click when the mic was released, one that could be copied just by making a clicking sound with one's voice. The F-4 crews, when they made transmissions, would end by giving it their own aural click. It completed the illusion, with 7 of the FPAF's 16 MiG-21s shot down, zero US losses.

    Russian don't use decoy drone ?

    • @agsystems8220
      @agsystems8220 Před 11 měsíci

      They seem to regard missiles as the attackers, and have always built cheaply. Quantity over quality, and many dumb munitions rather than a focus on smart weapons. You can either build decoys, or you can learn to build hypersonic attack vehicles cheaper than an interceptor (dubious whether Russia has achieved this). There is little reason to use decoy attackers if they have comparable cost and are equally attritible to genuine ones.
      This is in stark contrast to western doctrine, which frequently has manned platforms performing incursions into enemy airspace with the intent to recover them, and expensive precision systems as effectors. These are worthwhile decoying.
      The thing that surprises me is the lack of decoy radar systems, or even launchers, but I guess we might not hear about them. Decoy drones are expected to crash, and Russia wants to display outrage at overt western support of Ukraine, so will publicise decoy drones, but if Ukraine hit a flatbed truck with some pipes on the back of it then they would not want to advertise if they were falling for Russian decoys, while Russia would also not want to advertise that they are using them.
      The short answer is that this war is quite asymmetric, so we cannot infer from Russia's non use of decoy drones anything really.

      The decoys need an engine, wings, and a transponder. They don't even need to be able to fly particularly precisely. An AA missile needs precise control, and some sort of sensor for target acquisition. They are inherently more expensive.
