The Tom Delong Stratocaster was reissued last year (2023) and people were pretty hyped about it. Some of the early releases had QC issues and most sold out quickly in the desirable colors. Thanks to David NGDing one, I finally got to try it and I've got to say - it might be "basic" for 1300, but I had a lot of fun with this and would suggest it if you can get a good one.

I like Fenders, but $1,300 is ‘relatively’ insane for a one pickup, hardtail Mexican Strat.
i don´t get it too......
What, if any, are the differences between this new version and the old version that was $499?
@@-vickyspit-price adjusted for inflation lol
Well, it is a signature instrument for a guy who can barely play- isn't that worth the extra $700? ...I can hardly talk- I have a Sean Mendez...
The Harley Benton is so much higher spec'd for half the price, it's a no brainer.
I can't believe trogly played the fucking buddy holly solo before blink 182
one of the things I can't stand when he plays Signature guitar models
Lol it's a meme, we got Weezer'd
@@damien_eliason i think the bridget pfp knows she got weezered
Take a look at all the small things lol
And what's the weight again?😊
Not just some of them, but ooouralll tha smourl things.
Trogs got jokes😂😂
Fender Friday is an awesome idea! One day a week won't kill your Gibson loyalists.
Also, a single pickup strat without a tone control worked out ok for EVH.
I been telling people for years a single hum pickup rig that's wound a little hot does good numbers over a 3s model.
Saw the thumbnail and immediately said: “oh yea Tom Delonge!”
Welcome back Fender, we have missed you 🙂
No we havent
@@JokersWild70I missed u cutie
@neil2706 Sorry, not into guys. Nice try though
Speak for yourself
Wish there were more Fender and Gretsch. Love Gibson tones but I always found Fender has more versatility.
Nice crunchy tone!!! Humbuckers in a Strat do their own thing. That pickup seems to really perform that application well as a single pickup riff monster. There's some kind of special thing to not having a neck pickup, some might say it's less magnets pulling on em, maybe just the no messing round, just rocking vibe
Even the clean sounds overdriven due to the high output nature of the Invader pickup
If it’s the same as the original run, they make great “hard blues” instruments when run into a more “vintage” spec amp. Just use the volume to control the drive level (we used a Mesa Maverick “vintage” spec)
Wiring it for a push-pull or toggle switch and not them is a neat compromise. It's trivial to install one if you want it and they're giving you the option rather than only providing a two wire lead. It's a hell of a lot easier than converting a 2-wire humbucker into a 4-wire humbucker if it's even possible to do the conversion on your particular humbucker.
Fender Friday is back ! Yay. BTW the tuner for the G string is installed wrong 6:56
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
That thing sounds ferocious. I’ve played a few guitars with those invaders and they never sounded as good as that one that particular one sounds incredible. I’ll have to revisit them. Thanks, Austin.
The Invader is a great pickup...and they look as menacing as they sound!
Had one on the bridge of my 1978 Ibanez Musician since around 1985. Still sounds great, gigged solidly until 2008 and still sounds great one recordings even now. Juts an amazing old school kick ass pickup which kills combo amps and tubes lol. Love it :)
I think they sound like ass tbh. Super high output pickups are kind of dumb in the age of readily available high gain amps & modelers. You get all of the mud and none of the benefits of pushing the amp.
@@GuitarGuy4647 I think most would disagree but opinions are like assholes - everyone has one.
@@DanielBobke run an Invader through any modern amp. The added output not only doesn’t benefit the amp, it reduces clarity and in the case of the Invader adds unwanted low end.
@@GuitarGuy4647 I use modern amps all the time...no problems with my Invaders.
Fender should absolutely do more hardtails.
As for this one, $1300 for that?! Lol, newp.
Nice wonky tuners btw.
I’m going to get the Harley Benton version
A fun thing I found for these 1 humbucker guitars, put in a 3-way switch and you can do spilt, series or parallel. I’m doing a partscaster Esquire up like that (kind of a version of the paranormal one Squier did, but without the GIANT ugly pickguard.)
I love how you put easter eggs like “all the small things..” “what’s the wieght again?” ❤😂
Great tone, looks great with that big headstock ' The Fender logo in gold with the black outline looks retro 1965 (transition logo) when Fender dropped the 'spaghetti' logo from the 1950s, just before the introduction of the black with silver outline logo in about 1966. Fender seem to have re-branded themselves a few times, but each logo is cool in it's own way.
I have one from the earlier 2000s runs and one from this new run. The newer one definitely beats it out in feel and playability. At the end of the day it's a rough price for what it is, but I'm happy with it.
I saw one of these at my local GC in the yellow. I like that it has no trem, and a humbucker. I was kinda tempted, but I still prefer telecasters.
A bit like the old super strats we had in the 80s, Kramer etc with single pickup, single knob, but without the floyd rose trem.
Thanks for reviewing this guitar! I got one in the Daphne Blue with no issues and love playing it!
Thank you for this Fender Friday Trogly , thank you very much
We pieced together a single Humbucker Strat a while ago using a DiMarzio Super Distortion pickup that we love. I like that Invader 🤘🔥
As much as I love the Invader through an actual amp, the massive amount of low end and low mids doesn't mix well with amp sims. Swapped it our for an SH6 and it's a much better fit.
Looks like one of the tuners is slightly misaligned.
Yeah you’re right 6:56 timestamp shows it. I’m surprised Mr Trogly didn’t see that.
Maybe MIM means munted in Mexico 😂🤣 I mean Agufish got one of those direct from Fender and his was seriously munted and had to send it back !! Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
yeah id probably hit that headstock with some vintage amber to match the 70's era look... otherwise glad it's routed to accept most any pickup configuration. just routed my squier for HH
great demo on it btw!! as a strat guy i think i could get more guitar out of a partscaster but it's a cool one visually
Single pickup guitars are the coolest! It'd be cool to mod that invader with a 5 way super switch. You could get n coil, s coil, parallel humbucker, series humbucker, and out of phase humbucker that way.
What was the reading on the pickup?
Most reviewers on CZcams gave this guitar a fail. There is one still for sale at a steep discount in my local Craigslist and has been there since before Christmas. No one is buying it. I wonder if the first batch was a bad one? Maybe I should check out one of the new ones.
you still should try a Jim Root strat or jazzmaster. the strat is bigger than normal and not so rounded offthan a usual one!
Can we please get a Tom Starcaster review
Good job getting the green one! I like that big headstock & bold Fender logo.
What's the riff from at 7:41?
So since we have a Fender episode hopefully someone can help me with a question. I have a 2019 American Performer Tele in Penny. Over the last 2 months it has developed several small blisters in the finish about 1/2-1 CM in diameter. If I "pop" them a few are just to the silver paint coat under the penny layer and a few go down to the wood. Its never had anything put on it and hasn't left my den. Anyone ever experience this? If so am I doomed to it eventually looking like it has smallpox?
I liked Blink a bit in middle/high school, grew out of em. Could not justify paying retail for this guy. However, I’d love to build a ~400 dollar partscaster inspired by it.
i did this and love it. it’s definitely a one trick pony but its sounds so good and an absolute joy to play. also doesn’t hurt that it looks super clean!
@@briand4719 I have no issue with “one trick pony” guitars. More reason to have multiple 🤟🏻 I have 6 guitars and they all do something different.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar do it man, you won’t regret it 👍
I calculated the cost to see how much it would be to build your own with the exact same specs, and it was around $700 without looking for any deals, someone even started selling replicas of the neck plate.
@@ThePonDePon I can cut corners, don’t care about the body wood. All I need is a good neck on a Squier body and I’d be happy. That’s what my Tele is and I love it.
What was the pickup output reading?
Nice i find alot of peoples venture into the strat from singlecuts is a delonge style build. Put 2 invaders in a super strat and you have a ridiculously powerful rig.
Trog- you didn’t give us the output of that SD humbucker. I always look forward to that. 🫤
16.6K?
dam, the last time i was looking to buy a used strat it was around 600$ for a USA standard strat..and the made in Mexico guitars wer between 200-250$ all day long..
interesting...BUT i'll stick with more "traditional" strats and deffo 3 pickups......i like the rosewood fretboard...but the price seems a bit on the high side for what you get (from a Mex strat anyway)...cheers....
My friend was on their last tour as one of their video techs. I was so jealous lol
What is it with the Les Paul ultima teaser from the last episode? Yes I know what that lp custom with the tree of life inlays, I have been drooling over those guitars, anyways this was a great episode trogly
I like single pickup guitars, but think not having a tone knob is a mistake, as it limits the tone possibilities without any significant benefit. YMMV
It does sound brighter than a tone knob on 10 because the signal is less loaded down, but a no-load tone knob is the best of both worlds. Just as bright dimed, but with the option of turning down.
I kinda get it though, because the Invader is a very high output and dark sounding pickup, so I don't know how many people would realistically be turning the tone knob down on it.
This guitar is meant for fast power chords and riffs, with an occasional clean part here and there. Not much use for a tone knob, really just stop and go and that's it.
EVH’s Frankenstein had a “Tone” knob, but it was just the volume. Lol.
This is Tom Delonge we're talking about, I don't think a guitarist like him would need it
Did you ohm out the pickup on that one?
Love Fender Friday!
sneaking the buddy holo lick in there was awesome
Finally a Fender!
Pretty cool Strat and nice to see a Fender guitar at long last lol! Not bad looking and sounds good!
The saddles are definitely different than the OG one. These look offset like how the old American Deluxe Strats bridges were. But they should be better with the price they are asking for this model. I bought an original back in 02 for $429 when Musicans Friend was blowing them out. I played the shit out of that guitar. The neck pockets are all cracked out with a Hugh chunk of paint missing. Dents all through the body.
Large old school headstock too. For 1200 bucks without a hard case? That’s a hard NO for me.
The Trogly edition Strat would have a carved maple top, a veloute on a 5 piece maple neck with an ebony fingerboard, a TP-6 tail piece , Tim Shaw PAF pickups and '70's style Gibson branded Schaller tuners......and it would be purple.
Ain't no way I just got Weezered by Trogly
That's what She said?
Fantastic review and demo, Trogley. Sometimes you just gotta punk rock out! 🤘🏻
The Fender logo is simply misplaced as it has been in wild places on many models of this run
Nothing against Fender, I have several MIM/MIJ/MIA dig them all however that Harley for the price, I have a few of those too just not that model but I'd give it a try over this one. Again for the $ I have a SD Invader in my S1 which rocks!
How long have Fender been routing the body after paint?
That process started sometime in the late 2000's They paint bodies now that are whole, then cnc route bodies for everything but the neck pocket since that was the first route and the bodies are supported by the neck pocket through out the process.
@@Thornbeard Thanks for the info man
I played one of the originals a few years back and I just gotta say wow. Probably one the coolest guitars I’ve ever played, that thing RIPPED!
It's refreshin to see strat on this channel
Tom's strat is what got me into music, I always loved the design and I love that they're back from the reunion
How a lack of features translates into a hefty price tag is beyond me also compared to the gig bag that came with my Gibson SG that Fender effort doesn’t look like it offers much protection to the guitar.
You should check out Moar guitar's
Yay! Fender Friday!
That is one thing that bugs me about Seymour Duncun. They don't seem to care about having the name on the baseplate right side up. Some are, some are upside down. On the 59' there is no name on the front so it could be disorienting and wind up upside down or in the neck, lol.
Maybe the munted in mexico installers put a lefty version in ?
@@PeterMoore350 nice 🤣
At 6:56 the tuner’s look to be very wonky.
Yeah, I saw that too. All of them are, but especially the g-string tuner.
That would bug the shit out of of me. I'd plug and redrill that.
Not good for a $1300 guitar.
More Fender! MORE!
I remember back in the day there's rumours that Tom use neck version of Invader on bridge, just like dimebag use bridge version of Seymour Duncan 59 for his neck... But I guess the rumour is not true for Tom Delonge 🤔
I have one in Daphne blue. I absolutely love it! I was able to pick one up brand new for 1100$. Expensive yes. But the joy I get out of playing pop punk riff and metal riffs on it makes it all worth it to me.
Pau ferro is a Rosewood, from Bolivia. It is also known back to the 1600s as Bolivian Rosewood.
Technically it's not rosewood but closely related. Here's a quote from the Wood Database: "Pau Ferro is a wood of many names, and is sometimes called Morado: and because the wood is so similar in appearance and working properties to rosewood, it is also sometimes referred to as Bolivian or Santos Rosewood. The wood has been used in various capacities as a substitute for the endangered Brazilian Rosewood. Although the wood is not technically in the Dalbergia genus, it’s in a closely-related genus (Machaerium), and contains the same sensitizing compounds found in rosewoods-about as close to a true rosewood as a wood can get without actually being a Dalbergia species."
That's not actually true. Whilst it does bare some visual similarities it's otherwise quite different and is not a species of Rosewood. it actually shares more properties with Ebony than it does Rosewood.
Something about playing Creeping Death on a Tom Delong guitar seems hilarious to me 😂
Back in the day you could buy those at GC for 350 to 399 all day long. If my memory serves me right.
I love the strats. If I designed one it would be very similar
Have all Four colurs, Amazing guitar !!
I love it when we get Fender content!! Keep them coming!
Great playing man!
2:06 I see you Trogly I see what you do
More fenders please!!!! Tom was always a fender guy, minus a brief period using a les Paul standard and the angels in airwaves era he was always a fender guy
Brilliant guitar. Ordered mine as soon as I could and I'm over the moon. Rock machine.
These are more egregious than the Bonamassa's in recent years or the Hammett's and those are egregious for the fact that Epiphone has done guitars for LESS money with Gibson electronics and pickups.
Sending a controversial Fender to a dude who is a Gubson man is like sending a Yankee's fan a Red Sox jersey to review.
time for Jason Isbell Tele review. it was dope.
7:04 did i just weezed by trogly?!?!?!?
It's a cool guitar, but you could build a virtually identical replica for cheaper on Warmoth with nicer tonewoods and build quality.
The only differences are the lack of Fender branding on the headstock and TD neckplate, and that's it basically.
2:08 hilarious
Can we please get a TD Starcaster review
I basically think of this as a hardtail take on Eddie Van Halen’s Frankenstein guitar.
What's the weight again?
Hardtail strat bridges are the best of them all!!!
I like how every time Trogly reviews any guitar that chugs at all he throws in those dethklok riffs.
More thunderhorse riffs please!
Finally-Fender Friday
Hey there
Think G&L Rampage and Jerry Cantrell. I like it
Fender Friday baby 🤘👽
those frets look leveled but not recrowned. I see flat filed surfaces?
I've got 2 one from 2002
Routes? They look pretty good...ahem...compared to Gibson...they look fantastic...
Howdy everyone!!!
Thank You Trogly ❤
The Tom strat feels like it has an identity crisis IMO.
The headstock, tuners and traditional neck plate would suggest that it's late 60's in style, yet it has the modern bridge saddles, a non-tinted neck and a modern fretboard radius.
It's nice that they have used the 1970s style headstock. I love the color and that bridge is great too. WHO is Tom Delong?
“Where are you?”
6:40 😂😂😂
what about him just playing a guitar is funny
Wtf? Is this a normal price for a MIM fender? I haven’t priced fenders in a long time, but I bought my American Deluxe strat 10 years ago for that much and it came with a nice hard case. 1300 and it comes with a stupid gig bag? 🤦♂️
