  • Exploring derelict abandoned places: St Helens sea fort, a palmerston fort located in the Solent off the coast of the Isle of Wight (Sea Forts England)
Date of visit 21-08-2016. They started their approach before dawn, wading out up to waist deep in the early morning water.
Once they arrived at the fort they then had to scale the slippery rusted ladder to the top, awkwardly they climbed around the spiked cage to the very top.
Once on top of the fort, to their surprise, they discovered an open hatch to the inside....
Once inside they found a large network of tunnels.
This is extremely dangerous and I would not recommend anyone to attempt this!
The fort was built between 1867 and 1880
Each year in August, there is a mass walk out and around the fort.
During this spring tide the causeway appears from the sea upon which the original materials were carried out from the shore at St Helen's Old Church, where there was formerly a quarry. Access is from this point, but also along the spit from Bembridge.
    Gear used:
External shots: Panasonic GH4 with the 12-35 f2.8 - (Shot Handheld)
Shots inside: Sony a7s with Sony 16mm E mount lens with Fisheye adaptor.
Shot on Nebula 4000 Lite Gimbal.
Edited in Adobe Premier Pro CC 2015
    Graded with VisionColor - ImpulZ Kodak Vision3 50D 5203 (NEG)_FC LUT
Music Created (by me) in FL Studio 9 with the following VSTs:
    FM8, Nexus 2 and Absynth 5.
Again I really must stress do not attempt this!

My great grandfather lived there in the early 1900's with his family (grandfather included), he tended the lighthouse that used to be on the fort. The kids would wade out and back for school each day. One day when she was in her teens my great-aunt got stuck out there alone when a storm struck, she kept the light burning during the storm.. kept the shipping away... local heroine in the newspaper.

It's amazing, you can still see the purpose of most of the rooms, like magazines, shell hoists and the barracks. Shame you guys didn't have a long lens for the view through the gun ports, but I can see why you didn't think you'd need it. I've seen this fort from seaward but never thought I'd get to look around, even virtually. Nice work fellas.

My younger brother and I at around the age of 8 and 9 used to explore this fort regularly at the very low spring tides in the 1950s, access was by the door facing the old church on St Helens beach. The entrance was always full of stagnant water but it seems there has been a lot of "renovations and new materials" placed there since our visits. A lot of the brickwork is new along with the " non WW2 paraphenalia" that was not there on our visits. In my latter years I looked into purchasing it with an idea of an exclusive "drying out" clinic with an attached "upmarket" yachting marina connected to the Bembidge side but there were too many problems re planning and finance for me to want to bust a gut over a whim.

Another great video. It looked like it was being converted into a home or a hotel - new brickwork dividing the casemates and gun rooms. Nice to see somwhere where the magazines are all intact, as is the hoist gear. Those 'Palmerstones Follies' are fascinating places.

Not sure what the intended purpose of the "convert" is or who the current owner is.... From my visit is was evident that work was underway to restore/convert the remains... Hopefully if a conversion is taking place the owner will retain/restore some of the original characteristics, thanks for watching! :D

Another fantastic video. I have often wondered what it was like in there. It looks in great condition, especially the machinery.
    Thanks for uploading!

      Thanks for watching Dave!
It really was quite a pleasant suprise to find it in such good condition.
It looks as though the owner is in the process of doing it up, it would be amazing if something could be done with it as I could imagine it being a fantastic tourist attraction.

Great video. Parents lived in Bembridge and used to walk past that fort along the beach many a time. Great to see inside. Prefect choice of cameras and kit to use. Both the Gh4 for 4k and the a7s for low light. Great video. Thanks

The GH4 and a7s make a great team and I find each counter balance the others weaknesses.
Thank you very much for watching :D

Fascinating - always hoped someone would do a high quality film of the inside. My brother and I got in around 1978 and our names are probably scrawled on the wall to this day! Have a couple of shots if you're interested (taken on a very cheap camera).

i think archie milligan used to live there when he was a kid. he had to row to school and back but that was a long time ago. i always dreamed of living there as a kid. no idea who owns it now. thanks for the vid

      @AbandonedIsleofWight  Před 7 lety

No one I've asked seems to have any idea on the owner is.
I found a couple of sites listing it as being brought by the Isle of Wight Council when it was sold in 2003, however I'm not sure how reliable that information is...
      Thanks for watching!

Hey, another incredible video mate, used to do the fort walk for a few years but haven't in a while and always been interested in what it would look like inside! I live local so always see the beautiful creation

      Thanks Will :D
Its something that I've wanted to do for a while, as I too have always be curious whats inside, they really are amazing structures.
Getting in though is not for the faint hearted, the climb up is incredibly dangerous as you have to climb around the spiked anti-climb cage at the top.

    • @willvenn8951

Oh of course yes! Well maybe I might give it a go one day next time the tides allow it, will bring the correct camera and lighting gear looking at it though :)

I think it was abandoned because the souls of those that were forced to build it are fighting back. The same with all abandoned castles etc.
