This is one of those moments where I truly wish we could have behind-the-scenes cam to see Geoff dying of laughter. But I feel for Gavin, I would get confused as hell by this.
That was the greatest moment of that Let's Play. He was so close to getting the right answer. I was laughing so hard, I was dying

I got super confused by the May 3rd part of the question until I realized it had no relevance at all. It is mathematically impossible for any 3rd Wednesday to be the 7th, 14th, or the 28th. lol
The point of it there is that it assumes you aren't playing multiple choice, 100% like the show

It is relevant if it said May 4th, then none of these answers are right. It’s not confusing, just keep adding 7 days to May 3rd so May 31st is a Wednesday, June 7th is the first Wednesday of June, and you get June 21st as the answer

To be fair when i first saw this let's play, i was just as confused as gavin but i knew it couldn't be the 7th or 14th
i think the may 3rd part was there to confuse people, it's probably the part that really threw gavin off
I don’t see how it throws you off. 7 days a week, so May 10th is a Wednesday. So is the 17th, 24th, 31st, and guess what? June comes after May! So June 1st is a Thursday, June 7th is the first Wednesday, 14th the second, and 21st is the third Wednesday
zz tarry even without the May 3rd part, it basically asks, based on the answers available, which day will Wednesday fall on if it was the third Wednesday of June. It’s impossible for it to be any answer but the 21st

zz tarry it’s a multiple choice question though. If you look at the answers provided, then you only have one logical answer.
If the question stated May 4th, then the answers would have to change along with it. Otherwise the whole thing is obsolete. With the answers provided in the clip.

it’s just the way someone explained it and the way he problem itself is a bit confusing cause it takes time but the way someone explained it was that the problem was a trick question to catch the player in case they were like cheating off someone or just picking random answers or something

Oly1y Yeah, the obvious answer was 21st. But with May 3rd in there. It would have been advisable to count the weeks and make sure that the 3rd Wednesday in June, definitely ends up on the 21st.

Yeah I agree lol but to be honest, I don't think Gavin is such an idiot. With the amount of talking and throwing off the rest were doing in the background, I think I would've gotten it wrong first try as well lol

June 21, there are a specified three weeks and the smallest number that can be divided by 21 days is literally the 21rst day of June.

Funnily enough the 2017 calendar has May 3rd on a Wednesday with the third Wednesday of June being 21st.
OK. Let me math this out
If may the third is a Wednesday, and may has 31 days, then 3+7 =10, +7=17,+7=24,+7=31, then may 31rst +7 is June 7,+7=14+7=21.
The correct answer is June 21

The blame for this example of stupidity goes solely to the others. Gavin's not alone, the peer pressure would be just too much.

This is just a brilliantly evil question because the "May 3rd" is both entirely necessary to actually create an answer that has a date attached to it, but at the same time entirely irrelevant to solving the question. You could just as easily have led with "If February 19th is a Monday" or "If November 30th is a Saturday" and the answer is just as simple to get to.
I'll be honest, I was just as confused as Gavin was. Why WAS it banging on about May when the question was about June?
Paul B It's a red herring, basically. If the question simply asked what date the third wednesday of June would fall on, the question would be too easy, you simply recite your 7 times tables to 3 (7 x 3 = 21), and pick June 21st. When they throw the May date in there, your brain will automatically try and associate that date with the actual question, and, when you're under pressure like Gavin was, it can easily cause you to mess up.
The May part is for clearance so you know what day, say, June 1st will be when calculating. Without it, you can still know the range of the answer, but not certain what day is it if the answers were 20,21,22 for example

+irman925 It is. That's exactly why there is the "May 3rd was in a wednesday" thing there. Even if you don't go the simple path and go three weeks (3x7), if May 3rd is wednesday, you can go week by week - may 3rd is wed, then next wed is may 10th, then next wed is may 17th, and so forth, and it lands exactly on wednesday June 21st.
