  • Are you worried about gaining weight after thyroid surgery? In this video, Dr. Angela Leung, from the UCLA Health Endocrine Center, provides her insights.
Understanding the thyroid's role in metabolism is key. The butterfly-shaped gland creates thyroid hormones and uses them to regulate your metabolism.
Surgery might mean you need thyroid hormone replacement, depending on the extent. But even with partial removal, the remaining thyroid might be able to produce enough hormones - every person is different.
Weight gain is possible post-surgery if thyroid medication dosage is insufficient. Low thyroid hormone levels can slow your metabolism, affecting energy and weight.
Regular thyroid blood tests help monitor hormone levels. Remember, factors like appetite shifts and activity changes can also contribute to weight. Talk to your care team for more personalized guidance in this area.

Synthetic thyroid hormones do not work! My labs are normal and I have been overweight since I had it removed. My metabolism sucks They took ALL of my thyroid and one parathyroid. Im looking for DO or homeopathic doctor to help me. Someone who will really listen.

Not true. I have normal T4 and T3 levels according to exams and gained 10 kg after thyroidectomy. Also, i feel tingling fingers... Check dr Westin childs , about weight gain after total thyroidectomy, he explains exactly what happened to me. I had normal weight before removing my thyroid. I gained 10 kg in 3 months after having my thyroid removed. I regret undergoing this surgery everyday

Glad to hear that I'm not alone 😢 I hate it when people keep asking me about my weight. I really want to lose weight but no matter how I do a diet or exercise it doesn't work anymore. Also I can't do extreme exercise, my body can't handle it

I feel you 😪 in the same boat. I've watched as well Dr Childs, but I can't make my thyroid doctor do all the tests. They don't listen and can't keep changing doctors. That is why trying to find a solution on my own 😢

And I live in Brazil, in São Paulo, I've been to the most expensive experts here and they have no clue really... it's just hopeless for me, I feel hopeless. Dr Childs doesn't work seeing patients any more, otherwise I would travel to see him

I gained weight too. My TSH and T4 levels were perfect, my energy level was balanced before my thyroidectomy to remove cancer. Now, i'm cancer free, but I gained 15# that seem impossible to lose, i'm dead tired and take a nap mid day despite sleeping a solid 8-10 hours at night. My TSH is forced hyperthyroid for the first 5 years post surgery so I should be losing weight. frustrating, but cancer free.

I would never had this done if I knew I would never be able to eat again. I am disgusted at 6 lb weight gain in 3 weeks. I will starve myself if I have to. I will not be fat. What happened to informed consent.

Find a DO or holistic dr to help you get on Dessicated thyroid. The synthetics do NOT work. Your bloodwork looks normal but you still gain weight. Happened to me and my best friend (who was always skinny). Now she has a shape like mine, 🥴 it truly sucks.

Completely agree with comments. Endocrinologists are a bunch of quacks

5 years since thyroidectomy, 4 cysts in total. I've gained 20kilos. It's hard to lose weight.. I tried with no rice, keto diet and low carb still same. I can't do exercise because I get tired easily and I almost faint and couldn't breathe. I was a cheerleader for 4 years and doing exercises everyday for hours is cool now I couldn't even make it after 30mins. I'm always getting dizzy and sleepy even after having 10 hours of sleep

I had half my thyroid removed and then a few months later had a severe B12 deficiency. My metabolism was shot.
The Doctors ignored me and told me 'my bloods were normal'.
The hospital that did the procedure said 'if you have any symptoms contact your Doctor'.
The medical system is appalling when it comes to endocrine problems

How did you lose weight but not gain? Did your appetite level decrease or increase?
