  • Hello everyone! Welcome to the Country Club Mall in LaVale Maryland near Cumberland. Located right in the middle of the mountains, Country Club Mall would open in 1981 as a regional mall for the Cumberland area. The mall would be rather successful for the area, and would see great success in the 80s and 90s. However, 2002 would see Kmart close at Country Club Mall. This would be demolished and replaced with a Walmart with a mall entrance. With this,, Country Club Mall would continue on as a destination for the Cumberland region throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The mall would be 90% Occupied until 2018. Bon Ton would file bankruptcy in 2018 and close all locations including the Country Club Mall store. In February 2020, Sears would close their store at Country Club Mall and JCPenney would follow suit in October that year. Today, Country Club Mall sits with 3 empty anchors and Namdar at ownership with an uncertain future. Whilst it was only 60% occupied, it still seemed to have crowds. Let's take a walk through Country Club Mall and see how it's doing in 2023!

I like the aesthetic, and the opportunity to attract PA and WV shoppers as well. Hoping that Boscovs and/or Belk consider moving in.

I have been going to this mall for 15 years, and in those 15 years, it has been remodeled in some areas. I have looked back at some pictures from when my parents were my younger , which would be from the 80's, and 90's, this mall hasn't been changed a lot but i like it that way. There are so many memories in this mall. I still shop there to this day. Long live Country Club Mall!

The Bon Ton at Country Club Mall was one of the better stores. Large footprint, wide selection of quality merchandise, always well stocked and many items not stocked in their other locations. Home Store was very extensive with many nice items. Miss that store!

I grew up in Cumberland, born in 1943 and left Cumberland when drafted into the Viet Nam mess. Never returned to Cumberland , but I remember how busy the city was, Jobs for everyone and that Turkey Day Football Game with Fort Hill and the Alco Campers. Go Campers. So painful to see what has happened to the Queen City. It is my understanding that drugs now rule and industry has been replaced by prisons.

We were there in the early 80s probably till 84. Sad to see it has fallen by the wayside as so many American malls have. It was such an adventure to go there as a boy. The arcade that was just inside the back entrance changed my life. It had a ramp that went around the inside wall basically giving it a second layer for games. Mamma would let me and dad play and she would go exploring on her own with a big smile. Man those were beautiful memories. Long live CC Mall!

The mall was remodeled in the late 90s i think, it used to be brown brick with sunken fountains and seating areas. When kmart was torn down so were probably 20 or so store spaces.

It was the place to be on a Weekend when I was in high school in the early 80's. The AMC-6 movie theater, arcade, record store, and just a great place to go and people watch.

Grew up here. Fast forward almost a year later to July 2024, Rue21 is gone as well as the cell fix stand. Only new things that have came were a liquor store and a tennis-like court (pickle ball I think?). And Walmart has closed off their mall entrance and now uses it for storage for online orders and stuff. The new management claimed they were gonna revive it when they bought it but we’ve yet to see much of that, sadly 😢

This mall does look nice, and clean. They're main problem definitely seems to be vacancy issues. If it's in the mountains, something tells me a Bass Pro Shops would be a good idea. Those seem to be doing pretty well in malls compared to other stores.

    • @ERA_Productions
      @ERA_Productions  Před 10 měsíci +1

Good point! TBH, though, the only reason I don’t think Bass Pro would go here, is because they are in Harrisburg, not too far away, and also in Morgantown, which is only about an hour away from here

Everyone saying it lacks character, feeling or emotion, much of that is because they have neglected it so much over the years. Post renovation in the mid 90's, the indoor concourse was full of palm trees and other tropical plants. Flash forward 15 years, the mature trees all became overgrown and became a tipping hazard in the large movable planters, so they were removed. The smaller plants slowly died and were not replaced. Even the outside used to be well landscaped and manicured. I know for a fact that the maintenance staff used to take great pride in the care of the interior plants and landscaping.
The second issue was when they relocated WalMart to the mall, they tore down about 1/3 of the existing mall to accommodate it. That killed a lot of the natural charm, and 'mall feel'.
It is a shell of the property it used to be. It's sad watching it slowly decline through the years.

Thanks for covering the Country Club Mall! This was my mall growing up. My dad worked at Kmart throughout my childhood and I worked a a few places in the mall years ago. I still visit it a few times a year when I’m in town visiting family as I love that place so much. There’s a bunch of stuff about the mall that you may not know.
    1. The Bon-Ton was massive. When it expanded 15ish years ago, it went from the main entrance in centre court down to the Walmart.
    2. One big issue with the mall now is lack of food. Outside of Wasabi and Auntie Anne’s, there’s no other place to eat. There was a Chick-fil-A until a few years back but it closed.
    3. It was remodeled in the 90s. It used to have a nice fountain in it.
    4. A set of pickleball courts are now in the old FYE which is the gray storefront at the beginning of the hallway to the theater.
It’s great you covered this mall and I’m glad you enjoyed it. As someone who has a ton of memories at that place, I’m glad someone else liked it. 😊

My childhood mall. So many memories here: hanging with friends, Christmas shopping, dates, etc. This mall was awesome growing up and was at full occupancy. But it’s only been struggling lately due to Namdar and Mason. I really want my childhood mall back and the mall be sold to good owners like PREIT or Simon.
    Update:
The former FYE space got a brand new Pickleball court.
A Touch of Home opened in the former Hallmark.
Arkham Games opened in the former Justice.
Also it is rumored that Bon-Ton is becoming White Oaks bowling alley and that we’re getting a brand new arcade. Also in some of the vacant spaces, there are “JC Bar” signs and phone numbers hanging up. So does that mean the mall is getting new owners? I hope. While Namdar neglects their properties, it seems like the employees and everyone here is trying to bring back businesses into the mall.
