- In this video I finish the work on this lovely old Fender Precision Bass from the 1970's. I dress the frets, install a new Switchcraft output jack, completely rewire and test the pickups and electronics, create a bespoke shim for the neck heel, and finally I string and set up the action and intonation.

One of my favourite YT channels! Never stop!
Thanks for your kind words Sean.
I second this. Excellent work. Also love the look of that rosewood board
Good video and nice skilled work on this P bass. And thanks for the tip with the paper clip sandpaper for polishing frets! I'ma gonna steal that one, LOL
Thanks mate. Yep that's one of my favourite hacks. Fret polishing is something that no luthier enjoys.
Always such a thoughtful approach to the work at hand. You have an amazing range of skills and are a great teacher. Thanks.
Thanks Mark.
Sweet. I know the guy who owns this bass, he'll love it. Great vid as usual =^)
that is a grate way to fit the pickup 👌 very nice job on that bass 👌👌👌
Thanks mate.
Rob, your attention to details is 2nd to none. Mesmerizing work you did there! Cheers, mate 🍻
Thanks mate.
Absolutely first class sterling work again. I might’ve said it before but I wished you lived and worked within 50 miles of me in Yorkshire UK. I just don’t know anybody that works to the standard you do. You also have the electrical knowledge……invaluable!
Cheers mate.
I've stopped watching mainstream TV and watch Robs, Daves and Geoffs (the kewi) channels now...waaaaaaay more interesting.
Great show Rob... yet again👍
Thanks mate.
@RobMods Any new shows in the pipeline Rob? Hope all well mate 😎
Love your work Rob, a pleasure to watch .. the Stingray one was great too... i have them both 73P & 77SR.. I bet he was happy with 79 when he got it back...
Thanks Jeffrey. I'm glad you like my stuff mate!
7:50 - finally....someone who did a worse soldering job than me! :)
If you work on vintage instruments, this sort of thing is very common. I guess a lot of old axes were at some stage worth very little money, and not worth taking to a pro. Most times, Iike with this one, I completely rewire it.
Fabulous work Rob. Wonderful attention to detail. Where are you bassed. No pun intended
Another great video but could you please bring back the voiceover, we need to hear your thoughts and knowledge on these things. I know the asmr type video are popular right now, but it would be great if you could reconsider. Thanks!
Fair point. There's a few YT creators who I really love that don't say much. Torbjörn Åhman is one who comes to mind. I've enjoyed his videos for years. With this video, I was very short on time (as usual!), plus I had a load of footage to sift through, since there was no planning for this one. So I decided to hold back on the VO. Also, much of what I did here I've talked about in other videos. Many people just have a passing interest and like to watch. (Like me with Torbjörn Åhman's blacksmithing). But don't worry, I'll explain myself in future content, where I think it needs it. So I think moving forward, expect a mix of content I reckon. Cheers!
Are you keeping this bass, Rob?
Ha ha, I would love to, but it's not mine unfortunately.
6:20 what did you use on the fretboard to make it come out looking so nice?
I used Feast Watson Orange Oil. It is a polymerising oil (I'm fairly sure it's BLO thinned with citrus turpentine), so only apply to a well cleaned fretboard, apply sparingly, and leave to dry. I also use Dunlop 65 for 'boards on new guitars that are just a bit dry looking.
Is there a specific buffing compound you recommend for polishing the frets?
I start with 400 or 600 grit paper. Then I use 0000 steel wool. (Mask off pickups if you can't remove the neck.) If it needs that extra sheen, I use that metal polishing chalk. I'm not sure what it is exactly, I've had it for years. I also load my strop with it for chisels and plane blades.
@@RobMods Thanks for the in depth review, I'll try your method when I get a chance 👍
Hey Rob have a question for ya
How can I get in touch ?
Jeff
I'm reading Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for about the 4th time. I can tell you care about Quality.
That book is a classic! There are parallels with guitar work for sure.
Hey mate, Are you able to thin out a guitar neck for me? I sent a message on messenger a couple week ago but dont think its been opened. its an LSL T-bone
Hi mate. Sorry I didn't see your message. At the moment I'm not taking in work I'm afraid. But thanks for thinking of me! Cheers.
