He asked a question right after the first request not fully hearing it and when she said to hold it that is what he probably perceived as her repeating her first request, but she made a new one

I went back rewatched it twice and until I heard onto the plate. As it is being given to him she says can you hold it. That is the request and task at hand when he receives it. The other was not said directly to him which is why it was not heard or received correctly.
