I own the Manfrotto BeFree Live, and I love it as well. For being so light and portable, it's remarkably stable.
Started off my first two years shooting off of (basically) this setup. It's killer for the price, cant beat it!
Hope this gear guide helps you if you are just getting started in wedding filmmaking! 😍 You can see the full list of gear here: kit.co/whoismatt/budget-wedding-filmmaking
Couple years ago I jumped straight into filmmaking, with the setup like that, I invested in camera gears, but one thing that I really understood since then, that I spend much more time editing, sound designing, creating than filming...and realised that 2 years I worked on laptop, I got used to proxies and hours of rendering and etc. But one day I edited on real editing PC. And then I realised that I spend most of my editing time struggling instead of comfortly creating, my 40% NTSC laptop display is bad for colorgrading, my crappy headphones, 15 inch display with tiny source window...my advice for begginers - invest in good PC and Monitor, because you'll be spending most of the time editing, buy an ergonomic chair...believe me to stay in this bussiness you have to love the editing process, and its really hard with laggy pc, and with pain in the back...and yes A6400 is amazing cam. my advice good PC, versatile cam, good mics, and at least one good portable light source.
So ..so true 👌🏻

Thanks Matt, this was super helpful!

I'm going to be shooting my first wedding this summer and this video is EXACTLY what I needed!! Thanks!!!
Awesome! Best of luck Tyler!
@@whoismatt thanks! I'll be sure to share it with you for one of your live reviews! ✌️
How did it work out?
@@btrain65 super well! I gained like 4 more weddings for next year from it! Thanks for asking!!
@@whoismatt you are awesome.
Mat: memory cards will be one of the cheapest things you will have to buy for your camera!
CANON 1DX Mark III has entered the chat
😂😂😂 the opposite camera from budget!
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson lol he means because that camera requires you to buy EXPENSIVE memory cards! Haha that was a good joke felipe
Jose Rios haha and eventually most things will become CFexpress

Huge help! Great info, much appreciated, my friend! Cheers!!
This is sooo complete guide for beginner like me.. really helpful thanks!!
That Sigma 16mm 1.4 is sick. Been using it for the past two years on all my weddings. The Sigma 56mm 1.4 is also super light and fire. 🔥
Nice! I've only ever heard good things about the 16mm, it was a no brainer to recommend. I will have to look into that 56mm :)
This video its before 3years and still help people you are great videographer and youtuber thank you so much!
More great content. Love your channel!
Sweet! Thanks Matt, I just found this video in 2022 and still it really helpful for a beginner like me to decide which camera to buy. Much appreciated if you make a video on a budget a6400 rig for casual vlogging and filmmaking. Salam from Malaysia :)
Hey Matt! Great one there as always. I was expecting you'd spread some of that budget to cover some cheap lights. I'm in Nigeria and that usually means filming dark skinned folks in some poorly-lit reception venues and churches. Kinda makes additional lights a must have.
Hey thanks! Planning on a budget lighting video soon!
Very logical and straight forward information!
Thank you Matt!
Thanks your videos helped me with my first shoot, seeing how you interact with the couples and everyone is nice. I have an a7 iii, a sigma art 35mm 1.4, a monopod, and a maxed out credit card haha. I had to borrow a variable ND filter and that tascam mic but it worked pretty well. A gimbal and some more lenses would be great of course but I should probably actually profit first lol
You're awesome thank you for all the detail information.
Why do you always get me feeling like I have to buy new gear? Thanks bro!
Great work Matt - always a good resource for those starting out! I would add this cautionary message that for those just starting out, one should also consider in their budget a 4k-capable editing computer which you have also so nicely provided a guide as well. A much better value than a gimbal, slider, drone, etc. I'd add it to your description too! Furthermore, Davinci Resolve is an amazing free non-linear editor (it blows my mind that it's free to be honest). Just be sure you new Davinci Resolve editors are filming with an 8-bit codec so you can you use the free version!
Thanks so much Jon! Good call on adding a link to the budget editing computer, I will do just that. 😁
Can you do a new video on this topic for 2022/2023? Thanks!
it really helped me in my first wedding video
I would recommend a Canon C100 with a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and a Sigma 50-100 f1.8. One of the best camera/lens combination out there.
I think we sometimes underestimate the value simplicity brings.
This is great Matt, Love all your work for the community. Learnt so much from you! I think having a zoom lens like 18-105 is a better option and plus any vintage 50mm 1.8 for low light and preps :) Also I would not recommend monopod over gimbal. I either shoot handheld or on gimbal, not having IBIS is not a problem especially if you get that OS lens plus you can always get 3 contact stabilization :) Gimbal shots are so much more dynamic for establishing, you could even imitate Drone with it haha
Hey! The 18-105 is a great lens too! I was thinking about price and lowlight though and prefer prime lenses for lowlight capabilities over that f4 on the 18-105.
GOOD INFORMATION, THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
Hey great video, thanks for sharing! Quick question. While you have your Tascam recording your audio, what is your method for recording back up audio in case that method fails maybe due to low battery, etc? Do you record back up using another source or just on cam mic?
I think a second angle camera should be higher on the priority list. getting that kiss is the single most important thing, and most cameras have an annoying 20 minute limit. Sometimes its hard to know when a good time to reset would be without missing anything.
hey guy i have a a6400, 16mm Sigma, 35mm Sony and Ronin SC. I love this gear!
I just started out & I really enjoy your content & information. My question is how do you feel about the Canon EOS RP?
I would also recommend the 18-105mm F/4 with clear image zoom, it can reach out to about 200mm.
Great lens! Wish it was a bit better in lowlight. :)
Wouldn’t own an F/4 lens.
f4 is terrible for weddings. especially on super 35mm
@@robertbouchardt3357 seriously? i still considering it for my wedding gear wish tho :(

Thank you so much!!
The Sigma 30mm firmware update makes the manual focus ring perfect. Like butta.
Good to hear! Glad they improved that!

MATT JOHNSON is the MAN!!! Thank you so much for all the inspiration and valuable content. This is a great video. I watched so much of Matts content when starting my wedding videography venture a year ago and gained so much knowledge. He also inspired me to start CZcams. Thanks Matt for all the amazing content and the BEARD 🤣
Thanks Drew! Really been enjoying your CZcams vids
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson thanks so much Matt. Hope to see you again soon. PS that Colorado vid holds a place in my heart. Such a cool story.
The A6400 is a crop sense camera so another thing to keep in mind! I’m using the Sigma holy trinity which is 16mm, 24 and 56mm
I had one and it doesn’t matter if it’s a crop. It produces beautiful video :)
Great video! Actually, thanks to your previous reviews of Tascam DR-10l, I bought it and I am happy as hell with a quality - still have it on my SOUND playlist 🖤
What about lenses, in my latest video I am explaining how to squeeze even more from the lens if you do not have money to purchase plenty of prime lenses.
Arigato, Matt 🙏🏽
When you use a camera that has IBIS do you still use a gimbal for some extra stability or just go free hand?
Just bought the sigma 30mm f1.4 and love ittttt
Awesome! Killer lens for the price for sure!
Hi Matt, may i ask you what you would buy to make my gear set ready for wedding filming?
I am starting my side business as a wedding photographer. I think about having the option to go deeper into wedding filming:
I currently have:
- A7 II + A7 III
- 24/1.4 GM
- Tamron 28-75/2.8
- 135/1.8 GM
- Rode VideoMicro
- Good tripod
My budget to extend this is around 700-1500€/$
Many thanks in advance
Matt, if I want to start from budget and add another camera, say remote to walk around that I can transmit via wifi, what and how would you recommend doing that?
Hey, great video... Thank you for the review... I am looking to buy a video camera for wedding videography/photography. Would you recomend this? considering wedding can be full day events. Some cameras tend to overheat mid shoot. lol.
Thanks again...
I bought a slider once, used it one time. Bought a gimble, never looked back 😂
My Manfrotto monopod was extremely sturdy, but then my 2nd wedding in with it. A kid jumped on it and it snapped in two. I was hand help filming at the time and heard a massive crack behind me. I just knew what that was. Very sad, loved it.
Good video Matt, spot on 👍🏼😁
Haha nooooo not the monopod! That's such a sad story 😂
do you have a recommendation for a tripod/monopod that uses the arca-swiss type plate that comes with the DJI Ronin RSC-2? THank you sir!
Hey Matt! Could you make an updated video to this now in 2023? In the past few years ith the FX3/FX30, tons of other good mirrorless cameras, audio equipment, lighting and more thats been released since this, an update would be great.
These are amazing tips. Maybe lighting is also important?
Hi, thanks for your video. I have Canon RP at the moment with 50mm and 24-240mm lens. If I would like to buy another camera for wedding shooting which one should I get now?
Thank you for the tips and tricks. Next time make a video for a budget outdoor video shoot.
If I may add, I would recommend getting something wider than 16mm, considering it is apsc cameras we are talking about. Maybe a good option would be 10-18 Canon with that Fotodiox adapter for epic super wide shots as establishers? I use this lens for real estate but in weddings it also does wonders.
16mm is still pretty wide in my opinion, but if you want wider Sony makes a 10-18mm for around $800
hello sir you are great i want to ask can i start with canon M50
Hey Matt, If I wanted to use a camera for vlogging would you recommend 6600 or is that over the top. And which lense for a home vlogger and I want to use it to take pictures for fun.
Wow very nice
This should be called "How to Build a Budget Sony Kit" :)
agree, you can get real beautiful pictures with that kit
Sony + Sigma kit
Hi, great video Matt, but at 00:45 you say there is a link with "Matt flat" setting PP for sony a6400. I cant find it Matt.
Great video Matt! I bought 2 of the Tascam DR-10L’s. They work great. Do you have a video on audio for church and reception? I have very bad reverb when I mic the groom and officiant. I have to go through and turn off officiants mic whenever the groom speaks and vise versa. I’ve bought a couple of reverb / echo plugins for FCPX but nothing seems to work
Hey thanks! That’s a pretty normal part of audio mixing, I always use the mic that has a person talking and mute the others until the person talking changes. It takes time but it’s worth it.
Any recommendations for MFT lenses? Thanks
I thought about the a6400 but I wanted that IBIS and snagged a mint condition used a6500 for $700. I usually stick with my Sigma 18-35 f1.8 with the MC-11 adapter. I’m just not sure if the sigma 16mm is worth It if I have the 18-35. The only plus I can think of is gimbal capability. Any thoughts?
Great video by the way man :)
Great call on the used a6500, that’s great if you can get one for that price! I’m pretty sure the 16mm with have better autofocus than that 18-35 with the adapter but if you’re happy with it I wouldn’t change.
correct me if i'm wrong but the a6400 (or 6600) are both APS-C, about the lenses choice, a 35mm on a full frame will looks like a 50mm on an APS-C. (great video thx)
Do you need to convert the XAVC-S files from the a6600 before they can be edited in Premiere?
Could I use these lenses with a gh5...I’m looking at getting into videography/weddings and looking for affordable lenses for gh5
I have Nikon D90 would you say its good for shooting weddings?
and I thought I was the only one who paid for a slider just to carry it around with no use :P nice list and tips! thank you
Thank you for this Matt Iv been using two a6400 when they came out. and keep watching your review videos of our wedding videos. does this change the price I charge. I feel confident when I work now. And I used to charge 1250 with a way older Sony vg20 I think. For a documentary style video. I doubled my price. Hope to send you a vid for a reaction from you guys
I think you should definitely raise your prices. :)
Thank you Matt, I am in Toronto, as newcomer I wanna star the business I am looking forward for your help
Do you consider that the new Sony ZV-1 can do decent work?
would you recommend a Sony A7ii if you can get it for around $650?
Whenever he said you don't need this and that I was like yeah he is right. Who needs absolutely a drone to shoot a wedding?😅😅
Would this over heat recoding like let’s say a mass ceremony? Because i know for like photo shoots or the venue your not recording the entire run time
I love you!!!!
Matt! newly subscribed here. Amazing channel and info homie! really appreciate what you do.
ONe question...i noticed you didn't mention lights? Do you not use any when shooting weddings?
Do the lens and camera bodies you use let you shoot without the need for lights?
Keep up the great work!!
Hey thanks! I recommend picking up lights but I wanted to get the basics out of the way in this video first. I’m working on a video about budget lighting that should work well with this setup.
@@whoismatt Sweet! Cant wait for that video to drop. appreciate the reply
matt how if I use just a one lens Sony 18-135mm f3.5 this .
is this enough ???
please help me
Hey Matt, Great job on this video, however this video is 2 years old I think it's time to go ahead and update this video because there are plenty of budget alternatives to a lot of the gear that you mention or at least some of the gear. Like for instance as far as sound goes there are other alternatives to the Tascam they are still really good sounding like the Sony TX660 Sony has upgraded that voice recorder to where the sound is actually pretty good and also makes a fantastic reception mic and it is also a really good mic to use in an emergency because there are times when something's going to happen or you might forget to mic somebody up, there has been times that mic saved me.
As for the lenses I agree that the sigma 16 mm is a great wide angle lens and I've actually seen people use only the 16 mm lens for the entire wedding although I don't recommend it but the wedding still came out looking good and I agree the Sony 35 mm is still a awesome choice don't know much about the sigma 30mm but I imagine that one is a good one as well for medium focal length.
As far as the zoom I disagree with the 70 to 200. I will say that a better option would be the 24 to 70 to walk around with. as far as the 70 to 200 I would put that on a tripod. But Tamron came out with the 35-150 f2-2.8 I think that would be a better option than the 24 to 70 or 70 to 200. And then there's also the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. for a cheaper option. As far as lighting goes I would say the yn216 are great lights to start out with $70. Because I noticed you didn't talk about lighting. When I first started out I had that light and I used it for a bunch of weddings although they're not very good when you have huge big Ballroom receptions but they will do and they are better than nothing. I hope you don't take offense to this but I thought it would be a good video idea for you.
Good list. There is definitely a starting investment needed for making a good video. I started with $3k worth of gear (close to what Matt listed but with a b cam for recording ceremonies). Once you make a couple good videos, your should be able to market yourself better and then you can put aside money to upgrade your gear. If you're not equipped to produce a good starting video, then you have a longer period of doing low paying work.
Gear does matter. I know you could give a great filmmaker a two year old iPhone and he could make a nice video, but if you give that same filmmaker the gear he wants to use, then he would make something much better.
Thanks Christian!
Why the tascam dr 40x over the zoom h5?
For wedding long len, If I have to choose only one Len between 135mm and 70-200mm which len would you strongly recommend to buy? thanks Matt Johnson
70-200 it’s more versatile
I've used a Vintage Vivitar 70-210mm lens for video in the past and its amazing you can pick one up on ebay for less than $20
Nice choice! I was trying to recommend only new lenses/equipment due to some people not being able to find things used. But I think that’s a great choice if you can find one.
Is it a macro lens? Also what adapter do you use?
The Canon FD 70-210 f/4 is also a good, cheap vintage choice
If you get the Canon lens and a SIGMA adapter, you can get autofocus for photography! It WILL NOT work for video (it hunts all day and never finds anything for supper), but it is nice if you do photography and the AF for photos is plenty good.
That adapter is $250 though, so you are paying for that AF.
Hey Matt, thanks for the tips. I have a question: if I ONLY buy a 24-70mm and a 16mm, would that be enough for a beginner wedding filmmaker? I own sony a6400
Hey thanks Rehman! The only con of the 24-70mm is that even at 70mm that may not be close enough for a wedding ceremony. If you get put in the back of a church etc, you might need to rent a 70-200 or 70-300 until you can afford one. Hope that helps! :)
Suggestion about long telephoto zoom. In my country there are still lenses Sony DT 55-200 f4-f5,6 for 150 USD. They are small an A mount.)))
That should work well, you’ll just need an adapter
Quick question for you, Matt. I was thinking it might be important to have one A camera that is at the back of the venue that just records the whole ceremony...ideally unmanned. So, that means it would need foolproof (as much as possible) autofocus and unlimited recording. I have two Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras (Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and Panasonic Lumix G85) that would make sense on the sides, but I was thinking I would want a camcorder for this task.
My E-M1 Mark II unfortunately has a 30-minute recording limit and a questionable preamp, and my G85 can't be trusted for autofocus...not to mention the lack of a headphone jack.
A) How important is it in your experience to have a camera doing that...recording the whole ceremony uninterrupted?
B) If it is important, do you have any recommendations for budget camcorders to run unmanned?
C) Would it make more sense to get an external video recorder like a Ninja Inferno to make up for the shortcomings of my E-M1? I say Ninja Inferno over Ninja V because the Inferno has XLR inputs, and I can't output ProRes RAW anyway.
I never recommend autofocus for the ceremony. I would just use the g85 manually focused from the back
Is there some reason you didn't recommend the Sony a6500, which has IBIS? I just wondered if it had a downside to video recording that you didn't mention it as an alternative? I have a couple of them and use them for backups - they seem to do a good job and were less expensive - and, of course, the IBIS.
I have a6600. Bought it instead of a6400 only for battery life. I think the only significant difference between a6500 with a6400-a6600 new AF. Didn't have a6500 but real time tracking AF with touch focus on display is really killer. Rest is same, not sure about presence of HLG in a6500. About IBIS. At least on a6600 it's not helping so much. Gonna buy gimbal and monopode.
Hey man, great video! I've got the Canon M50, do you think I could shoot weddings on that?
Canon M50 + Sigma 18-35 + Canon 50mm F1.8 would be a great budget wedding filmmaking setup.
Yes
Michael Scanlon cheers man! I’ve currently got the 50mm f1.8, 22mm f2, and tamrom 70-300
Yup but I would invest in a cheaper light like a torchled to help with lowlight
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson do you have any recommendations?
Does the a6400 has 60 FPS ?
you can get a a6500 used in the 600s range
Great point Ashley! That's a great camera, but for this build guide I wanted to point people to gear they could buy new. Would hate for someone to have a wedding coming up and not be able to find a certain piece of gear because nobody was selling it at the time.
I will shoot my first wedding in August. Pretty nervous about it already :)
You’re gonna do great!
Godspeed brother!
Think of all the things that can go right 😁📹👌🏾
In ur wedding filmmakng carreer have u ever got ur sd card corrupted ?
I have a question, shouldn't you have a wide to medium zoom lens also for events? I guess is not very pratical changing lenses everytime you want to change your zoom. thanks in advance !
Hey João! I've gotten pretty quick at changing lenses when filming weddings. The only zoom I use is a 70-200. Of course you could invest in a zoom lens but it will be more expensive and not as good in lowlight.
Advice please - what memory card is sufficient enough for a7r4 4k 24p rec ? Looking for a budget option please. Thanks
Hey! The memory card I linked to in this guide will work perfectly for the a7r4
I already own a Lumix G7 with a couple of prime lenses as well, in my case will the Lumix G85 be a good budget camera for weddings? I know the limitations of the micro 4/3 sensor, but from what I've read it offers unlimited recording and has IBIS as well. And for $699 with a 12-60 kit lens, seems like a good deal.
The g85 is a solid camera! Good for weddings but you will want to invest in some lighting as well like a Coreswx torchLED to keep from having to crank the iso too much at a wedding reception.
@@whoismatt Thanks!! I own an Aputure AL-M9 and with the G7 it has worked realy well. Will definitely look into the one you recommend! Thanks for the quick reply!
Do you think autofocus or overall image quality is more important for wedding filmmaking? I'm considering a Panasonic S5 or something like a Canon 90d or Sony ZVE10. I'm just wondering what features are most important as a wedding filmmaker.
AF can come in handy for gimbal work and quick capture. DSLR without Log profile isn't suited for serious video work. Sony cameras tend to have a good balance of both.
@@frankfeng2701 I ended up with the Gh5 Mark ii. I'm sure Matt wouldn't be happy, lol, but it's good enough for what I need
Look for used lenses or open box deals! I purchased my 70-200 f/4 for about $950 eBay.
Totally unrelated question.... I can’t find any videos on a type of glitch effect but I thought I’d ask you here since this is your most recent video. My video looks perfect and sounds great during playback on premiere pro at full resolution but it keeps breaking up the image in one frame right between clip changes or when there is a lot of motion in a few clips. It also keeps changing up some of the dB levels in the voice audio in different spots and every time I export it’s different. I used your adobe export settings and also played around with different settings to try to get rid of this problem but it’s still there. It is usually only in one frame that I see it but it’s a quick thing that happens that I have fixed before by dragging the exported video back into adobe into a new project timeline, then cutting out that single frame but now it’s so bad during clips with lots of motion that I can’t edit it out that way. An example is I have some PNG logos of Facebook and IG that move and scale with some text that appears while a blurred out computer screen is scrolling in the background. It keeps making the PNG graphics and the text images break up but no matter what I do, it’s always in the final exported video. These videos are for paying clients and I cannot deliver them until I figure this out. Please help?!... I’m losing my mind over this. Thanks in advance!
I don’t know how to message you directly but if we can figure out how, that would be awesome. Thanks.
May I recommend the Rokinon/Samyang 85mm cine lens. Super cheap and fantastic lens! 👌🔥 nice one Matt.
Great lens for the price! Hope you're doing well Adam. I really need to get over to the UK sometime soon.
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson you can stay at my house mate! #pjyamaparty
@@AdamWingFilms Party at Adams 😂
Hey Matt...what about gh5?? And you didnt mention the tascam price...i have a jie yang monopod...its almost the same as the manfrotto, but much cheaper
Hey Fernando! The GH5 is a great choice, but it's still at its cheapest around $1300, which is a substantial enough jump over the $900 for the a6400 that I didn't feel good recommending it as a budget option. The tascam DR-10L is $200.
@@whoismatt thank you Matt...Im from Portugal, and gh5 is a very popular câmera around the vídeographer community here...even you when you made the wedding on Portugal, used One:)
4:55 - E 55-210 мм, F4,5-6,3 OSS (SEL55210)
Only 150$
Profit.
I’m selling my 6000 for the 6400 only because I need unlimited recording, so upgrading to the 6600 would not help me with the additional angle for my wedding video.
I heard that the mic that comes with the Tascam isn't very good and that you should invest in a better one. Would you say that the Tascam mic is good or would you recommend upgrading it to something like the Rode smartLav+?
I’ve been using the stock Tascam mic for years without issue
@@whoismatt Sounds good, thank you sir.
Here's a question, if you have only one camera, are you shooting the groom during his vows, then hustling to the other side of the church to shoot the bride during her vows and how do you get the officiant in the shot if you are shooting the bride and groom ?
Haha it’s definitely not easy but doable! In that situation I would either have the camera on a tripod getting a single wider angle and using that (kinda boring but it would be documented) or moving with the camera filming different creative angles and just delivering basically a highlight.
Possibly a small light if only shooting with the a6400 ?
Good call, I considered mentioning that but didn’t want the video to be too long haha. Planning on a budget light video soon.
