You could also argue that the reason eSports is still going somewhat strong is because harsh bans and even prison time happened to make sure players understand the impact something that stupid will have, because as you can see by the example of the CS:GO team, they didn't understand the range of their matchfixing in the slightest.

It's a double edged sword, the more money that's put into esports (whether by popular rise/investors) there will be more and more betting and more and more match fixing that isn't so easy to expose

To be honest, I think it was important, that those things happened by the time they happened. If Esports would have grown, without those misteps, without the experience of how to handle those situations, it could have turned into a 'Tour the france' kind of scale, where there was a time, the best cyclists were all doped.
To those CS:GO Players, who can't make good for their errors: Man, I'm sorry for you, honestly, but this is the way you do good. Everybody needed to understand how serious and critical matchfixing is. You were the first caught in your game and the example had to be made. You're doing good by being the example of what can happen. I wish you would have known before this happened, what an impact it would have.
You shouldn't feel sorry for guys that were cheating and doing harm for everyone else! It's their decision to do wrong and them getting catched and punished as they should doesn't in any way change the fact that this is what they deserved no matter the reason for their cheat.
Doping is a greyer area than matchfixing. Cycling without doping would be a much slower sport. Gaming will eventually have even more powerful drugs than adderall at hand and pros will be tempted if not encouraged to dope.

It's funny how people only feel remorse after they were caught. People who cheat deserve nothing but contempt
Seriously. 99% of these players sold out the integrity of their game for literally a couple of dollars (Swag was reported to have made $40 for losing). If you are willing to sell out the game for a couple dollars what wont you do?
Match fixing is a high-stakes enterprise. High-stakes mean huge consequences, even if payouts aren't all that big.
The lifetime bans are a shame, but if you don't make a harsh example out of the guilty parties, you only embolden those who think they can get away with it.
FourSight especially for the criminals doing it. You also have the fixers who if they fail and lose their organization hundreds of thousands of dollars because they couldn’t fix the match are dead men walking

When Life was caught cheating...I was actually sad. That was my dude in sc2
i don't even play SC2, but I always watched his VODs and streams of tournaments he was in. His play style is like no other
I still wish in my heart that someday i will see another Life vs $o$ or Life vs Maru final.

I think it is important to also take into account that when an organized crime group approaches you and says “you’re going to lose this match and I will pay you $5k” there is an unspoken “or I can break your hands and you won’t be playing anything for a long time.” They wouldn’t be paying these people to lose unless they were making or losing tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars off that result.
The thing that blows my mind the most about all these matchfixing situations is that it only took 1 matching fixing scandal to completely kill the Starcraft scene and it didnt do that to any of the other games
BTW that 1918 Sox team is the reason Shoeless Joe Jackson will unfortunately never be in the HOF
And the thing that's often missed in the Sox story is how the players were tempted by the offer because they were treated like absolute rubbish & paid _very_ little, while the team owners were so greedy & corrupt they would make Gordon Gecko blush. The owners engaged in every unfair practice in the book....price fixing, match fixing, signing players to insanely unfair contracts without legal or financial advice, segregation & racism was rife and they exploited it to the full (despite fielding mixed teams - seemed like an 'equal opportunity when it suits us' deal). And Jackson didn't even get any money in the scandal.... grossly unfair & shame on the HOF.

As much as we want to keep the competitive integrity of any game in general there’s always the stereotype that “The poor wants to be Rich an d the rich wants to be richer”. And even though the newer generations hoping into Esports might be there for the stardom, fans, or even just to live out their dreams, There’s gonna be the one guy willing to do anything for some extra $$$

That is sadly the point, and why the lifetime bans have to stay. The trust between the promoters, the fans, the gamer, between everybody really, has been broken. If he has a terrible game and gets utterly destroyed in a match he "should" have won easily, we'll always wonder if he's throwing the game again. It sucks to lose the good or even best players in their respective game, but it's a choice they made and a punishment they deserve.

Two of the players that were banned from baseball events forever. One of them was Shoeless Joe Jackson, who accepted money but didn't throw the games, he actually had the best world series out of anyone and the other was named Bucky weaver I believe.

I didn't realise that there was matchfixing in esports all the way back in 1919
The thing that kinda annoys me about this is that some of the pros interviewed act like they'd do it again in a heartbeat. Dazed and Saintvicious for sure. I mean, meeting with the other team beforehand to effectively play a mode unsanctioned for the tournament is still fixing. A similar thing happened several years later when two players at EVO held their Smash Bros. match hostage by playing Bayonetta and intentionally stalling the match. An admin had to step in and threaten to DQ them both if they didn't take the match seriously and start playing to win.

@Azurkos The amount of money made only goes to show why the players should be banned. They were willing to sell out the integrity of the game for literally a couple of dollars.
@@TheBUGZNTA Back at a time when players had salaries like 100-200$ for the absolute best teams in the world (like Fnatic and NiP) and the biggest prize pools you had was shit like 1000$ and what not. It was a completly different scenario and this money for a lot of them was important. Its easy to look at it now and be like "oh they sold out for so little" but back then it was a lot.
@@SockLove Thats quite an exaggeration. The first major had a prize pool of a quarter million dollars. Sure players werent making the $20,000/m they are now but to pretend players were paid a couple of dollars is disingenuous.

I have a question about the IBP throw.
Why did they make it so obvious? Why couldn't they have lost 16-14 in which one mistake cost them the match, or did they have to lose 16-3 in order to get the skins?

That Dig v Crs series wasn't a matchfix that was done to make money if I recall, it was something to do with not being able to practice or something
When they ban you for life for something so bad you even denied doing and then you start trash talking the company who did it, it just shows how much you actually deserved it
It's relieving that iBuyPower is just blacklisted in any Valve sanction events.
Imagine if it is like in S.Korea where you'll have a large fine , a criminal case and a high possibility of jail time.
I was so bummed when Life got caught up for match fixing. I was super into SC2 at the time and he was one of my favorite players. Some of the stuff he pulled off blew my mind. I was never really that good at SC2, but I was a zerg main that really admired him for his talent, technical knowledge, and creativity.
It's strange to think match fixing is almost a rite of passage for competitive games. Once people start putting up enough money to get a player to throw a game, the sport has become big enough.
Most of these stories have one thing in common, the players threw too obviously because of their egos. No one would suspect iBP if they lost 16:14.
The bet was set so tat they wouldn't get more than 4 rounds, thats why they threw that obviously
bans are there to make sure games are clean. asking bans to be lifted will allow players to do more match fixing if they know they will be unbanned in the future

That killed SC2 Proleague. That killed the KeSPA-run teams.

Great video, but a pretty huge match fixing scandal was missed out on. In Korea there was a Legends of Legends match fixing scandal in 2014 with AHQ. Probably the most significant part of the story is that one of the players, Promise, tried to kill himself as a result of it.
The vibes on this video sure is horrendously sad.

@@lightningprowess6031 I dont think they agreed to split the earnings, they pretty much just decided to play one of the best of 5 games as an all mid game in the pre game lobby, and whoever won the tournament won, they did it for fun
People get killed over match fixing in conventional sports all the time and now that esports is getting so big its really important to establish how big of a deal this is
If you think it hasn't happened in esports you are mistaken. Criminal enterprises run esports betting in the same way they run sports betting.

I'm actually for life bans in certain situations. I guess this is one of these situations.
In football/soccer e.g. I just can't understand, how they are still allowing Suarez to play. He bit 3 people on the field, during games, caught by camera. He cheated and destroyed the dream of Ghana to go further in the world cup, buy stopping a ball, which was a clear goal, with both hands, and was shouting out of joy, after the other player missed the penalty - and he then was even treated as a national heroe by some people in Uruguay.
Yet, he is still allowed to play in major tournamets after a (in my opinion) very small punishment each time and is even respected as one of the greatest players on the world. And always, when I bring this up, football fans start crying: "He's a good player though" - honestly, that makes me sick and is one of the main reason why I stopped watching that "sport".
And if something similar was to happen to esports, I would very probably also let go of it..
I don’t see the problem with him blocking, he did it for his country, he got his punishment by getting sent off, the Ghana team had their chance to score, they fucked up, which wasn’t Suarez fault, I wouldn’t say what he did was right but anyone in his shoes would have done the same

Bsck in 2008 I played on a sponsored world of warcraft arena team. We threw a MLG tournament in Florida for $3,000 which resulted in a grand each. Doesnt sound like much but this was a lot back then.
Lifetime bans are fair. They should consider themselves lucky for the fact they are still allowed to play at all.
but they cant... swag has joined like 5 different rosters, they'll play (non valve sponsored) tournaments and do very well, just for another team to poach all of his teammates because they want to play in the majors, and swag isn't allowed to compete. at first it just seemed shitty, but after like 7 of his teammates were poached, it became pretty sad.

Little sad that there is cover of no Korean SC broodwar matchfixing scandal that killed SC leagues in Korea which some arguably became the fundamentals of contemporary esports scene. I would highly recommend you guys to check it out at one point
They didnt even mention promise from Korea. He tried to kill himself because he finally refused to be part of the match fixing scandal his team was involved in. He was given no way out, and he barely survived jumping off a building. THAT is a big story.
