With jaws powerful enough to crush a bowling ball, The Grizzly Bear is definitely a force of nature that commands respect. Luckily human encounters with them in the wild are rare due to their remote wilderness habitat… However make no mistake, they do happen and being prepared on how to react can mean the difference between life and death.
In this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote Peterson will show you first hand of what to do and NOT do in the event that you ever stumble upon one of these beautiful animals. He will do this using the aid of a 750lb male Grizzly Bear who is an ambassador for his species; helping people learn more about why these bears need to be respected and admired, not feared.
This is one episode that you have to see to believe - Coyote is going toe to claw with a Grizzly Bear!

yeah because you cant fight against a grizzly bear so if it tries to attack you, you usually want to get on the ground instantly. thats why he immediately made himself smaller.

@@sangiinar the purpose of making yourself look big is to scare the bear off and make it think you are not worth the fight. Most animals are very cautious and generally avoid attacking potential threats from the front because the can lead to injuries. Making yourself look big is actually almost universal in wildlife encounters.
But if the bear is coming at you (a mother bear protecting her cubs or near food), the reason you hunker down is because at this point the bear is already in attack mode. Making yourself big very likely won't do anything at this point. So now your goal becomes reducing your surface area and protecting your vitals. Unless the grizzly is extremely hungry, it has no reason to eat you. Almost all grizzly bear attacks are doing to be territorial in nature - once you do not present a threat to the bear or it's young anymore, it will loose interest. That is why you're supposed to 'play dead' if a grizzly charges you. Hunkering down is just a safer way to do so.
Different measures for different scenarios.
*Edit* changed second paragraph to refer to grizzlies specifically. Black bears and polar bears may still try to eat you, so in their case it makes more sense to try and fight for your live if he Spray doesn't work. Bears aren't good at turning so zig zags are a good option.
Bear survival order:
Backing out -> Scare -> defensive measures -> Fight or flight (or freeze).
Either way, bear predation events against humans are still rare.

You can tell me all the pro tips on bear encounters but I'd still probably try running away (making the situation worse I know) but seeing a cub out in the wild was the scariest thing I've ever seen out traveling in Canada, cause you never know if mama bear is nearby.
When it comes to really threatening situations its hard to think logically so you instinctively go to fight or flight mode so I get what you mean

Mama bears usually leave with their cubs, Since they don't want harm inflicted on its young, it leaves. But if you attack its cubs, ya done
You don't even have to attack the Cubs. If the Cubs come up to you and check you out, the Mom could view you as a potential threat.
Omar that's not true, mother bears are very likely to attack you if you stumble near their den or step in between her and her cub. It might be unintentional but if she sees you as a threat she will attack....

I was gathering cows and my dad drew my attention to a sow, yearling, and 3 cub grizzlies. They seemed to be headed over the hill, but they turned back and came about 75 yards from my mom. Then we decide they came within 45-50 yards of me. I was on my horse and thank goodness he decided to be a good boy and hardly reacted. This all happened on a ranch in Montana! Love living in this BEAUTIFUL state!!

This guy just saved my life, one day I was browsing on CZcams trying to find the perfect video to watch, until I stumbled upon this one. I was like pshh I'm never going to be in a bear attack. The next to days my grandma said we were going to Yellowstone national park. I was exited! We got in the car and drove to the park. In the car I was thinking about the video and I am just like who cares....( 1 hour later ) we started walking up a steep hill. Going past a sigh protruding out of a tree saying: WARNING BEARS. I didn't really care. So when we got to the flat grass area my grandma surprised me with a picnic! I started eating my sandwich, just looking around I saw a brown yellowish thing glomming in the sun. I was getting closer. And closer, till I heard crunching of leaves I went running back to my grandma telling here we need to get out of here now! When I turned around I made eye contact with the bear I tried to make a run for it but I remembered the video i told my grandma to duck and cover your neck she did what I said but bear kept nibbling on my grandmas jacket it took like a half a hour for the bear to leave! That was the scariest moment of my life I'm never going back to a rail trail ever ever again.

As kids, approx. 8 to 10 years old, in Catskills mountains in upstate NY, me and friend climbed upstream to reach top of mountain. On side of ravine we heard a roar, I asked her if she burped (lol! kids!) and she said no, then we heard it again and splashing in water. We looked over and there was huge Grizzly with baby, charging toward us! What took us all day to climb, took us nothing to get back down stream! It came after us, but being it was waterfalls and such, she probably didn't follow us far, but she did charge after us. But we didn't stop, had no idea if she was still coming and weren't about to stop and look! We were falling down falls, slipping on rocks, twigs in our hair... we ran up to my mom (we were staying in friends old Mt. house, my family and my friends family) and were falling over each other to tell her what happened. She didn't believe us! Those were the days when NOBODY believed what kids said! Cut to 40 years later, at my Fathers funeral, friend came with her kids and mom. We were looking at pictures and reminiscing, then she said "Remember when we were chased by a bear and nobody believed us!?" YES! lol! I sure did remember!
Blondie, you guys got lucky. I'm sure you had cuts and bruises from all you went thru getting away from that bear, but you lived to tell about it(to no avail). Yes, I remember that time myself ( I am 71) where parents didn't believe you.
I think it was just a brown colored Black Bear. Grizzlies don't live in New York state.
An interesting story: You've probably heard this but there was a Bear during WW2 that was raised by the Polish Army which was now under the British as Poland was taken by Germany. That bear was raised by those soldiers who was in charge of Artillery,he was given cigarettes and even Vodka when it was small. As it grew, the Polish soldiers was firing artillery shells and the Bear was watching them. He was watching soldiers carrying shells to the artillery ready to be fired.The bear started to do the same, carrying box of artillery shells exactly like the soldiers did.
