Misty is one of the most popular jazz ballads and the distinctive melody is immediately recognisable amongst musicians. The tune is written in the key of Eb major and follows an A1 - A2 - B - A2 Form. The tonality is primarily major with some altered harmony sprinkled in here and there.
Before diving into the chords of Misty it’s a good idea to get a solid grasp of the melody. Find a strong vocal recording of the tune and study how the melody is phrased.
The melodic range of Misty is 2 octaves with the lowest note being the F below middle C and the highest note being F an octave above middle C. This is a wide spread for the melody of a jazz standard and so your right hand will be kept busy when playing this tune!

What an incredibly well done instructional piano video! The pace that the info is given, starting with just the melody and bass notes, then adding 3s and 7s, going over the chords & theory, doing it again with no talking, just awesome.
Thanks Christopher. Next I would recommend checking out the lesson on "Tenderly" which we approach in a similar manner: www.pianogroove.com/jazz-piano-lessons/tenderly-jazz-standard/ - Hope this helps and any questions just get in touch :-) Cheers, PianoGroove

Your tutorial is so logical and simple, you make me feel like I could learn to play this! I am an absolute beginner, but I’m working on it. I’n retired now, so I can devote ss much time to this as I want.
I keep coming back to this lesson. As a beginner who knows his theory, it's just so good.
After trying for years to play piano I came across Denelle Piano Lesson and this appears to be the top online method (check it out on google)

This looks to be on elf the very best jazz tutorials I've ever seen on YT - great clear explanations and I love the way you point out the II,V,Is for extra clarity - I haven't had time to try this yet, but I will do as soon as possible. Superb work and thanks so very much :) (edit - will check the new site out!)
Great lesson, love the harmony. Many thanks!!!

Sir, Excellent. I think this is the best tutorial of Misty that one can get on youtube.... beautifully explained and visually perfect.
An excellent tutorial- clear, concise, and so well presented ❤

Great video instruction - working on the latter extensions. God Bless You, and Kenny Barron!
Beautiful! Going to learn it when I get my piano.
🎹🎷🎺
Just a simple thank you for making these videos...You take the time to share what you know with others...Gracias..
Great Tutorial!!! Thank you so much!!!
This tutorial is so so amazing. Thank you so much!!!!
Another great lesson. Thank you. I notice the 4 standards tutorials you offer are all rather slow, legato pieces. Very important and valuable to someone like me. I have much to learn but your approach to voicing is spot on and I'm going to continue working it until I master it.
I'd be curious to see hear and learn how you cover something bit bit more bouncy - e.g. Beyond the Sea, Mack the Knife, String of Pearls, Jersey Bounce. Could you consider covering a piece this these in the days ahead?
Again, I am incredibly grateful for the time and effort you put into your material.
Great lesson; I really like the "building block approach." Thank you.
One of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen!! That extension part at the end had me hitting the shed 🥵💪

Hello friends, i hope that you like this Misty Piano Version LINK czcams.com/video/Qp-dicJUtmY/video.html
This blew my mind and taught me a different way to play piano
Thanks! Loved it! All of the very best wishes!
As a jazz/blues musician I really enjoy your tutorials, wish they had YT when I was studying would have made understanding the theory behind it all much easier. I do have a request however, could you post some tutorials covering improve techniques eg when to use pentatonics, Lydian modes etc as this is something that I struggled to get my head around when I was starting out and would be helpful to students. Keep posting your tutorials. They are some of the best I have seen.
Really excellent tutorial. As a self-taught key tinkler I usually just thud out the roots and throw chords over the top. But the way you explained the bass notes, the melody and then the harmony was so well explained that I can actually see how to apply that to other tunes. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Very clear presentation! The best tutorial ever! Bless your sir! Thanks for sharing..

I've seen some very good tutorials for jazz standards; this is the best one I've seen so far. Maybe it's just because it fits my current playing level so well. But I feel like a fish taking to water.
Thank you so much.

Hey, thanks for the great lesson! After you practice a tune do you transpose everything to any key or do you learn it just in a few key's ?
I've heard several versions of this tune, yours is the best one !

I’m 8 years late but very happy I found this video
Very hairy to play for a not professional pianist like me but I'm happy to take this challenge. Thanks a lot for you generosity to share this lessons for free !
Thanks from China!
Awesome video and thanks. Please do a video for "all the things you are"
obrigado o ensino para pessoas como eu não virtuosa muito obrigado,,,,,,,,,,,,,,parabéns.
Hey PianoGroove! Awesome lesson! Which virtual keyboard are you using?
Thank you very much, this is so great! It increases my understanding of how to do various voicings so much. I appreciate if in another video, you could show how we use the pedal to sustain some of the notes, while also switch to hitting the keys to produce some shorter duration voicings to produce that jazz-like effects, and how to include side-slipping and sycopation, which where we should put the stress on to play louder, etc. Also, it will be even more useful to us if you could, in exactly the same melodies, try different voicing methods and speed to harmonize, so that we can have a feel of the difference in the overall effect. Love your teaching and thanks again!
acwl Thanks for the suggestions dude! I cover side-slipping with So What chords right here: czcams.com/video/qhLyI4xGWnA/video.htmlm40s - hope you find that useful. Cheers, PianoGroove.
Hi, I am a fan of you. Your explanations are really helpful and interesant. I am going through all your videos and I am learning a lot. I have a request: could you please post a video on how you have assembled the videos (screenflow, midiculous, camera and so on). THANKS and congratulations ;)

Amazing video!!!
Спасибо!!! Очень помогли...
Done by a real pro! I've wanted to learn this beautiful song for ages, but was always put off by fancy versions that are too difficult to learn. Here, you give an almost skeleton version, and slowly ace it up to a pretty beautiful rendition anyone would be proud to play for an audience. Bravo! Thank you very much!
+Eddie T Thanks Eddie - what you have described is my exact methodology with teaching standards, start of simple and build it up. Glad you enjoyed it! All the best, PianoGroove
+PianoGroove Excellent work! It sure would help to hear it all the way through. It gets into my brain, then through my hands.
Bill McPherson Believe me, Bill, it's a great piece.
Agreed Eddie! And, I'm determined to learn it. One thing that would really help me is to hear the piece all the way through without any breaks.
Wow, great video!
