  • Well for those that have done this hike, you obviously know of the unmatched beauty that this hike presents. Stunning views in all directions with amazing vistas of Mt. Birdwood and Mt. Smuts. We did encounter a rather large grizzly just off the trail however his interest in us wasn't there thankfully. There were several in the area at the start of the trailhead as we drove in as well. Carry your bear spray and know how to use it!
This roughly a 20km return trip with an elevation gain around 850m and a return trip time of around 7.5 hours or so.
The path for this hike is easy to follow and we had no issues finding the way up Commonwealth Creek Valley to Smuts pass where the views just continue to impress. Here are the 2 beautiful Birdwood lakes. From the pass the trail is well marked to a smaller summit, but don't let that discourage you from doing this. You will be well rewarded with beautiful scenery in all directions.

Disclaimer - Always scramble within your own abilities. Thoroughly assess the situation and research the route. GPS and/or a topo map are a valuable tool to help. Leave a route description behind with exact location should you not arrive home at a predetermined time. Have a way to contact rescue as well if you are in an area of no cell service(SPOT, Garmin, etc.). Also, if hiking in winter make sure you have the necessary skill and knowledge regarding unstable conditions and perform a proper risk assessment prior to engaging in this activity.

Ok I've watched a lot of videos from you for peaks I have hiked, and this is so far the first video with music and without you talking LOL. I love to hear your insights on peaks too but thus is ok too. Thanks for sharing. Will do this on Sunday

Always amazing videos, and what I meant by amazing is because, regular and most of tourists do not often see this charming side of nature when they come in Canada. The fact that your videos are always straight to point and realistic also what makes this content of yours unique and something I would go back time to time.
Speaking of time, putting out such content and sharing it in internet makes a difference not only to people who are close to nature, but also teaches older and younger generations to see how charming mother nature is. We should protect and respect them. Scrambling and hiking mountains also gives a physical sense of achievement like when we face struggles in real life.
Oh my gosh, you don't know and I can't express it in words how after every mountain climbing you do, gives me a sense of relief, overcoming something, like as if I was climbing the mountains with you! So dang amazing! You make it look easy though real talk here, its like you are just taking a walk in your lawn but always be careful! You'd probably already know that.
Plus just like what you've said in other videos, the struggles are worth it the moment you reached in the top and personally breath in the air up high along with those enormous mountains, which tourists/people would often just drive by, not realizing that you can not only take a closer look but also climb one. Like seriously I think you deserve more praises Sir Harlan! Thank you for sharing such educational content and giving such activity meaningful importance and recognition! Stay safe and always have fun! God bless Sir Harlan!

Well thanks for what you have said. I do enjoy making these videos. They are time consuming but I do enjoy the finished product.
I agree that the mountains are sure a place of beauty that more people need to get out an experience. It's too easy to get caught in the daily routine of just staying home when the mountains aren't that far of a drive.
Take care and once again I appreciate your kind words.
