Coliseum Mountain Hike, Nordegg Ab (4K)
A very straightforward hike through switchbacks to a beautiful ridgewalk. Continue on to the summit without any real obstacles, passing by some neat rock formations. There is no longer a fire lookout up top but remnants of it are still there. A great hike for a really hot day.

Having read a few trip reports I expected us to be turning up the avalanche gulley after the 6th bridge. This however came too soon and we passed bridge 8 before heading up at the 4.5km mark. There have likely been a couple more bridges added since those reports due to the flood of 2013. What was a pretty easy hike initially became arduous once we were partway up the avalanche gulley and had st...

My brother and I went along with some other hikers to do Mt. Kidd. I don't remember whether it was Kidd South or Kidd North. I suspect it was Kidd North because I don't remember crossing a bunch of bridges, and I don't remember going up, up, and up a huge rocky slope like you did. I should mention that we did the hike in the early 1970s, over 50 years ago. I do remember as we were hiking back to the parking lot that it was already getting dark. Your video is very inspiring although it does leave me with this thought... "What was I thinking!"
@@Malcolm-Achtman ... I haven't done Kidd North (main summit) but it has a lot more scree. It also requires there to be hardly any snow in the gulley heading up as it can have Avi potential. I'm not sure if Kidd South was a big destination back then based on the fainter trails to access it. Hard to say.
@@HarlanFox--Scrambles I'm the "other brother" who did Mt. Kidd in July, 1971. Based on your video, I'm pretty certain we went up Kidd North. I do remember contending with a lot of scree. There was a fair amount of icy snow as well. I actually fell at one point and slid down 150' on icy snow. I was able to stop myself with my geological hammer once I hit a scree patch. I remember my fingers looking blue from the exposure to the cold surface. The worst part was having to do that portion of the climb a second time. Not fun.🙃 It was fun coming back down. The other guys on the adventure taught me how to ski down on the the snowy patches. Of course, there were no skis or ski poles, but I was wearing my Greb Kodiak boots. Fortunately, I was a very good ice skater, so adapting an "eagle" position and free-styling down the slope was invigorating. It's amazing what one can do when young and stupid.😵💫
@@myronachtman4304 ... Quite the adventure you had. Yes we all have done questionable things at one time or another. Without an ice axe that would have been scary.

Hey Harlan your videos are all great. I'm planning on climbing Rundle this Saturday solo and see some trip reports on all trails. Any advice on snow right now up high? Was thinking I might need crampons or micro spikes and an ice axe but perhaps if it's a snow field higher up less punishing scree? Would love to hit the trail with you sometime and thanks!
Thanks for that! To be honest, I really don't know what the conditions are like currently, but I did hear that there was supposed to be snow and quite a bit of it above 2,500 m over the last couple of days. Not sure how unstable things will be up there or how it will be crossing the dragons back. I would definitely have crampons and an ice ax though if I was going up there. Let me know when you head out and I'll try and make one with you. Cheers!

Love your channel. We are coming in late July. Wondering what the length of the hike is. Considering one or 2 'medium climbs' before we tackle Mt. Temple. This looks like a good one. Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks! It's about 12 km. I really thought it had amazing views for minimal effort. It should be ready to go by late July
@@HarlanFox--Scrambles what do you think the total time would be car to car for an 'averagely' fit group of 2. I will not hold you to it . . .Just looking at an estimate for scheduling purposes.

I was going to do it last year but never got to it. Hopefully this year. Thanks!
Awesome vid! When I climbed it I went up via Guinn’s Pass and down the gully. It’s longer, but much gentler grade and it saves a lot of scree bashing. Plus incredible views the whole way. Nice to see this peak getting some love.
Thanks! We debated going down that way but I was tired and ready to take the shortest path down. Ha! I'm surprised more people don't go on this one. Amazing views up top.
100%. Although at least this way it still feels a little remote. 😂
That's incredible you saw mama bear and cubs! I did Tangle Ridge in early august and saw the sign about the bear activity. Such nice views in that area. :)

Harlan. What do you think - better views here than Wilcox?
Harlan, I love your commentary. You guys do "make it look so easy". Your videos are quite instructive - pointing out the crux and alternate routes. Keep it up!
... Thanks! I try to at least be informative.
Long ago, 2021, I got the Covid travel bug, and went out to Banff. I watched this video many times and got inspired. Many scrambles like Fortress, Chester and Eiffel later, I am still absolutely no way, no how, getting up THAT. After couple years, it still looks ridiculous.
Its 10km return, about 950m gain. First time did it 2021. Its awesome hike. Close to Canmore. But, I recall I got terrible vertigo looking into chasm. Do not go if its super windy or cold - you will be miserable. The West Wind pass and change of scenery keep it interesting. A must do.
... I've been up there several times.
Great video! Im following in your footsteps. Summited Sept23. They call it the most beautiful hike in Banff - Im not sure if its true - but I stopped to take over hundred photos.
Thanks! I found it a very nice hike. Wasn't the most amazing views I had seen but it was up there for sure.
Congratulations! I summited Sept23. I was inspired by your video. Its tricky to find stable slabs up Reid gully. The crux for me was the summit block. Too far right and you are sliding down. Too far left and big exposure. Ofcourse like the forest steep section, you only find the right "easy" way on way down.
Thanks again! Ya, this was my second time up here. I really like Sparrowhawk. The route up the backside can be a little challenging but no major obstacles IMO. Glad you got it done. Cheers!
My wife and I are working on getting some mountain hiking experience. Is the back side of St Piran down to Agnes lake as bad as so many people make it sound? No trail? Super steep? Should this be avoided if experience is minimal? Thanks for an tips Harlan.
There wasn't a lot of trail to follow. That being said, the way is pretty obvious as far as where you need to go to get down towards Lake Agnes. Just slow going a little bit.
I love watching your channel. I just discovered it at the end off 2023. I love hiking in the mountains, and I hope some day to peak some of them. One I would love to watch you climb is Buller mountain. Buller pass is one of my favourite hikes and it would be great to see your summit pan.
Thanks Brett! It was actually on my list to do Buller this year but I never got to it. Likely this summer though. Stay tuned. Cheers!
Did you carry bear spray? I know all the authorities urge everyone to do so in Banff, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary on the trails like Sulphur, which are closer to the population centres.
I always have it and have it close at hand ready to deploy. Bears will show up where you least expect, crowded trails or not.
Named after my gg grandpa
Cool!
I feel like getting through all the obstacles would be easy but tiring and a bit dangerous if you get what I mean.
Being dangerous is on a bit of a sliding scale, and everyone has a different tolerance level to exposure and terrain. I actually found this to be quite enjoyable, albeit a little long. Cheers!
One of the hardest yet most rewarding hikes ive done. Wear boots, bring food, and tons of water.

I’d be curious if my register entry from September 12/1995 would still be in there ? That was a wonderful solo trip. My ascent route stayed climbers left all the way up. I used that gully/wall for the descent. I was using Alan Kane’s first edition scrambles book. Your route up looks a little different than what I remember mine being.
... My guess is that the register from back then has hopefully been claimed and filed with Kananaskis parks (ACC maybe but not sure). I followed close to Bob Spirkos route. There was a guy that was going up as I came down and he was ascending climbers left of where I went on lots of slab.
@@HarlanFox--Scrambles 1995 was a long time ago. Pretty sure a few registers have been filled up since my days out there. My entry that September day in 95 was the first in almost a month and a half since the previous one. Gone are the days of going out there and not seeing a soul all day long. Maybe with the exception of Mt Ball. That was another solo that went really well.
