    Your video was awesome. I own a Avid Pro 4848. While watching your video I had an idea. If you had a metal detector and passed it over the slab prior to machining it might detect any embedded metal in the slab allowing the opportunity to remove it and prevent damage to expensive cutters. Just a thought. Thanks again.

    Nice video! You should wire your dust collection into your main controller box (relay 1 or relay 2). That way you can turn it on and off in Mach instead of the wall switch. Maybe do a short video on it as well.

    I like the video, keep up the good work. Quick improvement tip - You should probably invest in a collet nut torque wrench, that brute force method at 11-minute mark is really not the way to go. Too much torque, even over short timespans, reduces the holding forces and creates more runout and faster worn out collets. Too little force you probably already know what happens.

    I just wanted to tell you your video was awesome. I also have an Avid 4848 Pro. While watching your video I had a thought about protecting your cutters. I was wondering if a metal detector that you could pass over the slabs before the program is started could efficiently detect any metal that might be embedded in the slab, allowing its removal prior to surfacing or milling. Just a thought..
    Thanks Again.

    Too bad about the 3 phase requirement. My new CNC is coming with 5.5kw as i don't have 3 phase available in my area. (I'm in the country)
    Wonder if they make a VFD that could run bigger while operating on 220 single phase.

    • @CanadianWoodworks

    What’s the size of CNC machine you have? Did u have any issue with cooling since this router is not water cooled?

  • @Zebra66
    @Zebra66 Před 3 lety

    Are you using 3 phase power? The Avid site states that running it off 1 phase power reduces peak power to 6.4hp. Does it ship with an undersized vfd? I run a 7.5hp spindle from a 50a 240v single phase circuit with a 10hp vfd designed for 1ph power in - 3ph out and I don't have to reduce peak power.

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety

      Yes I have 3 phase power, but I also agree with you, I like you run many machines with single phase in and 3 phase out, I've always practiced double size the vfd compared to the motor, from what I understand this does not reduce HP. So I don't know why this vfd would limit the HP with single phase but I larger vfd then needed is always better when using for single to three phase. Maybe this VFD has some sort of auto programming to limit HP if single phase.

    What do you use to sand the slabs once flattened? Wood mizer sells a slabbing machine that has a 7" sanding disk head. Would you think a sanding disk would work on the CNC. You may do a volume where you need to get the slab off? Thanks. Great machine and vid BTW

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety

      You right, i've used the sanding head for the cnc but we need to keep it surfacing slabs, so we have a 53'' wide belt sander, that is for sure way faster and better at sanding. Thanks for watching!

    Hi there! I am in the market for a CNC. I've been looking at Avid because the price is amazing but also have been looking at Shop Saber. It looks like you have a decent size company going. Have you ever been disappointed with purchasing the Avid Cnc? The only reason I ask is because I want to know if its justifiable to spend the extra money with Shop Saber. Thanks!

  • @WindRidgeWoodCrafts
    @WindRidgeWoodCrafts Před 3 lety

    Recent subscriber and love seeing the bigger CNCs and slabs getting surfaced. You mentioned controlling the CNC with the keyboard. Is that for flattening the full slab or just for some of the high points that need a separate pass? If it's for the full slab is it just quicker to jog it through with the keyboard than writing a flattening program for each size?

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety +1

      We use the keyboard for just the initial passes where we would be cutting more air then wood, once the pass will take at least 50% wood than we run the program. Over the years we have written all the programs we need, we just need to use a program that is wider than we need and just. a touch longer.

    Can you do larger step-overs with the bigger bit/more hp?

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety +2

      Exactly, we can step over 2'' instead of 1'' now, we do move the machine slower but the step over more then makes up for that, better finish and faster!

  • @AndrewAHayes
    @AndrewAHayes Před 3 lety

    When it comes to surfacing how much more accurate is it to do it on the CNC as opposed to the thicknesser planer?
    And with a bed that size I am really surprised you are bot running dual gantries and heads.

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety +1

      The cnc is 100% flat, the planer not always. Really depends on the material.

    I just recently purchased the same spindle for my Avid and plan to use it to flatten slabs. Is your spindle hooked up to 3 phase or did you use the converter that comes with it and run it on single phase power?

    • @CanadianWoodworks
      @CanadianWoodworks  Před 3 lety

      Hi, Great choice this spindle is really nice. No matter what you need to use the Vfd that comes with the spindle, yes it will convert single phase to 3 phase, but they say you'll loose about 2hp if you don't feed it 3 phase. I am feeding it 3phase from a Phase Perfect single to three phase converter
