I love that when Lee says, “It was my first attempt at doing stand up,” John immediately leans in and is already into the story.
What was the punchline to the joke, for being from Kent?
@@helenhamilton9561 “Kent” sounds like “c*nt.” So the way the joke is supposed to go is:
Lee: Where are you from?
Audience: I’m from Kent
Lee: What did you call me? (Making it sound like the audience member called him the swear)
But because he was so messed up, he gave the set up wrong. Instead of letting the audience member say, “Kent,” which is necessary, Lee botched it by asking, “Anyone in from Kent?”
@@helenhamilton9561 originally "what did you call me?" because Kent kinda sounds like c*nt (instead of * is a u). But he forgot, so he called the dude from Kent... A c*nt.
@@helenhamilton9561 accusing the person from Kent of calling you a similar-sounding word whose severity differs depending on what part of the world you're at, specifically the word he called the man in the audience.
Fact - Lee Mack is French for coat 😂
Cleese laughed, composed himself for a moment, and then he doubled over and stamped his feet when the joke hit him again. You know a joke is great when it gets that second wave of laughter.
@@RossDrum Righto bud
@@RossDrum you look melted.
Especially when you get it from John Cleese.
@SpanielRacing He’s from Kent
@@kylemerryman2074 well he's a c**t then 😄
I remember reading that Lee Mack said this was one of the biggest highlights of his life. Making John Cleese, his hero, like many who grew up with Monty Python, barrel over with laughter. You can see it in Lee’s face when his eyes clock John Cleese and Lee is besides himself for making his comedy hero laugh.
Paused at 2:39 and his pupils are sooooo dilated. Incredible

It's a testament to John Cleese's greatness as a comedian that he literally can't wait to hear yet another joke and punchline. He's dying of laughter because he simply loves comedy. And Lee Mack is an absolute genius story teller, so he should feel thrilled that John Cleese was in hysterics over his story.
I think he like every comedian knows what its like having a joke bomb as well
It’s also pratfall comedy- exactly the kind Cleese came to master. Imagine the comedy set with a Fawlty Towers Spanish accent!
He figured out what was coming... 🙂
thats the thing - absolute genius story teller. he didnt include too many details that would have dragged it out too long and killed the timing. I have watched this like 100 times now and still have tears rolling out of my eyes every time.
His delivery is impeccable.
Funny that
He is a very good comedian
wasnt it - his timing with this joke was flawless...
PhreshFunk true every single northerner has immaculate comedic timing thats the age old stereotype 😵
I have a chicken proof lawn, it's impeccable
It’s really cool when you realise how this is literally Lee taking a story of him failing to deliver a punchline, and making the failed punchline the actual punchline of this new joke, and it’s a banger
Lucifer’s Edits really ? Hadn’t thought of that
You've got a heck of a point there!
@@PolskiProductions he worships Lucifer. He's a bit slow
That is in fact when comedy becomes wit. When the tables are turned and the idiot becomes the sage.
H)?h)
If you can get that kind of reaction from John Cleese, you're doing something right. 🤣
I think Lee really got everything wrong 😂
Just remember - Cleese thinks being hit with fish is hilarious... 😉🤣
@@BassandoForte because it is, with the right delivery:)
@@BassandoForte You're a total Kent
@@andrewsoper5434 - Isn't that where Brexiteers come from...?? 🤣🤣
“This bloke shouts out me!”
*best wheeze ever by anyone*
Making John have that reaction is something to be proud of!
And Martin, also a great comedian.
You know you've made it as a comedian when John Cleese puts his face in his hands whilst silently trying to not die of laughter.
Lee Mack has said that making John Cleese laugh like that is the proudest moment of his career.
What makes you think that making John Cleese laugh is more difficult than making anybody else laugh?
@@TallSilentGuy John Cleese is laughing because he recognises the excellence of the story-telling. Fantastic set-up, pacing and execution. You can see the moment Cleese realises Mack is out of the segue and into the joke. Cleese sits up and leans forward to listen intently. John Cleese is a master comedian, and Mack is justifiably proud of impressing such a shewd judge of comedy.
@@liammellor6405 Where did he say it
Hear hear!
There's a bloke in a pub in Kent who tells a story about the time he was at Lee Mack's first gig.
I love him
His a c@@t lol
That's awesome
*Bloke from Kent:* "You'll NEVER guess what Lee Mack called me!"
thats a really good clever comment. respect from an expat in australia.
It's all in the timing. Literally everyone knows where this joke is going a minute before the punchline but Lee Mack's delivery is absolutely perfect.
I didn't 😅 i know Kent sounds vaguely like the other word (in their accent?) But why did Mack call him one lol 😅
nobody knew what the punchline was going to be... they just knew that everything he did on stage was backfiring. and when he asked if anyone was in from Kent they knew he was screwed then because no matter what happened he had already ruined the planned joke by asking it that way. and then he was drunk so he just blurted out something ridiculous and offensive.
@@RedroomStudios I'm not saying people knew the exact punch line but when the premise of the original joke was to conflate 'Kent' with the other word, while also pointing out he was very drunk, it's clear there was going to be a very specific mix up
I love how John immediately seems to sense where this is going.
As a comedy genius he's just following it to his own logical conclusion. :D
Same here!!! Makes it all the more hysterical LOL!
Like recognises like 😂
The moment where he puts his hand against his forehead he knows what's going to happen.
@@MiketheratguyMultimedia As a comedian who's been drunk on stage, and worked with alcoholic geniuses like some of the Monty Python crew, you could see the comedic PTSD, convulsing him with laughter.
Mack’s delivery and timing is impeccable here, and demonstrates the mastery of his craft. You know what’s coming with the gag, he massages your anticipation, then delivers the killer punchline perfectly. One of our truly funniest and talented comedians.
Yep the story was like a car crash in slow motion! Epic delivery. I've watched this clip so many times now and it still makes me cry laughing.
It looks like John Cleese has figured this all out quite early on but still finds it hilarious
@@FairgoldTraining It's all about the delivery
Proper Lancashire delivery
Thanks for explaining comedy.
It’s the pauses where you slowly realise how he must’ve messed up which made this so good.
You are so right! The timing, the build-up makes it so much funnier. It takes a lot of constrain not to speed up, knowing yourself what is coming.
Especially when you're totally expecting "What did you call me?" to be the punchline. That was a perfect twist.
He makes a slightly better use of "the pause" than even Kelsey Grammer, who IS a master at it.
czcams.com/video/1dIAdqZId28/video.html
Absolute banger of a story from Lee Mack but can we all just take a moment to appreciate Martin Clunes's "And it's still in your act!".
Clunes put the button on it for sure
Best part about this clip is that Lee Mack literally explains how to wind up to comedy gold, THEN literally acts on it.
Starts off with padding, and winds up slowly, taking pauses to allow the reality of the punchline to set in before it's said. Literally perfect.
Lee is an absolute legend, and the fact that people love to nitpick his deliveries is simply proof of that fact. He and David Mitchell have some of the most legendary comedic exchanges I've ever seen on Would I Lie to You
I could not hear the punch line, what did he say?
@@silajeep1 use your imagination.
I read Lee Mack's autobiography recently in which he remarks that making Cleese crack up with laughter was one of the proudest moments of his career.
Let's face it, Cleese is pretty much 'comedy royalty' in the same way that Elton, Eric, Mick, etc. are 'rock royalty'. I like Mack & he's right to feel proud.
I had one of my favorite female comedians (she's become a bit too harsh and mean for my taste now, but before, she was great) move into my city and she did some free workshops, to get people excited about plays, theathre and comedy (she'd organised an education, together with a few others.)
Either way, I wasn't interested in the education, but I did join the free workshop and at some point, we had to improvise. A girl got given the card 'scared' and she immediately went; 'Oh no, someone call the firebrigade, there's a cat stuck in a tree!'
She kept screaming and crying about the cat for a while and then gestured to me, indicating that I had to step in and take the card. I immediately went; 'Oh no, someone call the cats, there's a fireman stuck in a tree!'
Such a silly move, but the comedian was laughing loudly.
After this I imitated a forgetful goldfish and she thought it was hilarious. I was very closely watching the others, but she didn't laugh as loud when they improvised.
And then I got given a scenario with a (young and scared) boy that had to play my collegue. The audience (others) would mention emotions and we would play them.
In the scenario, we were in a circus and I was angry at him for not-warning the manager about a broken spotlight (that was about to fall down.)
Two minutes in, I was yanking at his shirt, screaming bloody murder about the risks and dangers and my unborn grandchildren that had been in jeopardy while performing underneath a wonky spotlight. And he was shy, h hadn't been prepared for this improv and didn't know what to do and was genuienly about to cry (I felt só bad) and I heard hiccup-noises coming from the bench and I looked up and the comedian was holding her head, nearly crying as well, but with laughter in this instance.
I continued on the same level of anger, which turned into tears (sadness) and madness and eventually just screaming into the air while rocking back and forth and clutching at his arm(the boy left without saying anything afterwards and I'm pretty sure I crushed his ego and dreams and hopes and t-shirt) and still I felt so proud. The comedian laughed about my improv, she liked my improv, that made the guilt go away again.
@@Widdekuu91 LOL ... if I had an Oscar, Globe or BAFTA in my hand right now, I'd bloody give to you!😉😂
But did yall know that LOGIC IS BIRACIAL

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how well Lee sets up and delivers this story? Even his anecdotes are a masterclass in comedy
He’s a legend. He’s so quick and so clever.
Lee Mack is the sharpest wit I’ve ever seen. He’s so quick. He’s literally on a lounge with Clunes and Cleese. Some of the best to have ever breathed and they are pissing themselves.
Totally agree. It’s evident it that first DVD he put out years ago, before he hit fame. He’s razor sharp.
Can we please retire that line because it's annoying as hell, and kind of condescending.
I love how John is listening intently, and is trying to figure out the punch line, but bursts in hysterics as soon as it was delivered. That is worth more than an award.
He was already laughing before the punchline because he knew whatever was coming would be hilarious .
@@jmvm31
Cleese had already worked out the punchline and was laughing at the anticipation of it being delivered
1:56 The moment Cleese anticipates the punchline is absolutely priceless. He's losing it! Lmao.
If I could make John Cleese laugh, I'd still owe him a million more.
Is there anyone who doesn't owe him a laugh?
Beautiful sentiment.
Brendan Lowe Yes.
Well said!
What a wonderful comment :).
And you're right. He's got millions of laughs in the bank when you look at it that way. And it's a good way of looking at it.
Must feel pretty good to get John Cleese cracked up like that.
It would be a privileged feeling I imagine
Well I mean, credit to Lee.. But... Taylor Swift also had him laughing, so? I don't know
He laughs easily, though. As should we all. :)
Jon Stewart near swooned when Cleese cracked up to one of his quips
Like most real pros, Cleese is a great comedy audience - he *wants* to laugh and be entertained.
I genuinely believe this to be one of the finest pieces of storytelling in stand-up comedy history. It's absolutely impeccable.
Wait till you find some Bernie Mac clips.
This is going to be a classic. Masterclass in comic delivery, leaving perhaps the funniest man who ever lived in tears of laughter.
I don’t think that he is THE funniest of all time, but he’s def in the top 15/20
I simply cannot stop enjoying John Cleese stomping with laughter at this. Too stinkin' funny. Lucky Lee Mack.

@@chipgaasche4933 He's so politically astute and based , it's unbelievable. The fact that he cancels the wokies before they have a chance to cancel him shows his integrity and balls of steel. Absolute hero.
To reduce a legend like Cleese to tears of laughter - that is real talent!
I've seen this a dozen times and still come back to it every now and then. Just too funny.
I've watched it before and then again today... at least 50 times on each occasion.
I only watched this a couple of days ago and tears are running down my cheeks again. So good, the delivery the timing, brilliant!!
Lee Mack is one of the greatest ad libbers this country has ever produced, the guy is a master, bloody hilarious.
So... What (bad?) word was said in the bleep?
@@truthisinthebible found the american
It wasn't an ad lib. It was a written joke.
@James No need to call @Oscar Bravo a “nob”. It is almost certainly a scripted joke - it’s an anecdote, like many of us tell. Difference is Lee Mack’s timing as well as physical comedy - in his gesticulations and facial expressions - is a masterclass. A beautifully choreographed joke.
@James Lee Mack's wider body of work is also mainly scripted. He's very good at delivering scripted jokes as if he's making it up. That's what comedians do.
I genuinely think Lee Mack has one of the quickest wits in comedy. He's so damned funny on everything.
I think it's his delivery which is very good, sort of asserting each line, he does this on Would I Lie to You he sounds like someone trying to get a point across and be right all the time.
Clearly this was a developed talent and not quite something that came to him naturally.
@@WCGreeny so?
he's an amazingly quick wit, there is another YT vid with about 2 hours of him just banging out funny stuff.
The issue with him is he can be a bit overbearing/finishes people's jokes/goes for low hanging fruit. He definitely is quick witted and a genuinely funny guy but if he toned it down a bit sometimes and let things breathe, I feel would be better
I love Graham, he ACTUALLY
