- It would be easy to cast all blame for the holocaust on one man, Adolf Hitler; the leader of Nazi Germany and the man whose face has now come to personify true evil. However, no one man could truly achieve such horrors on their own. From the start of his political career, he had followers. People who would flock to his cause and would ultimately help propel him to a stage where he could inflict such tragedy on the world. Heinrich Himmler, the head of the vaunted SS and one of the chief architects of the holocaust against the Jews and anyone else who did not fit his vision of a pure Germany. In this documentary, we will delve in to this terrifying figure of history and explore the career of a man who on both ideological and practical levels is literally responsible for the deaths of millions.

I liked how some of the lesser known points such as details in the SA/SS rise to power were included. At first I thought it would not capture my attention, but it did, good job.

I had a university assignment to compile a biography about one of Hitlers Henchmen. Out of all of them Himmler intrigued me the most. Thank you so much for this documentary it was really informative and interesting. Very sad to think of what happened.

The documentaries on this channel are in a class of their own, in nearly all cases better than anything on paid video streaming apps.
Interesting fact: The Nazis had one of the most progressive series of laws protecting animals, and those original laws are still on the books today in Germany, nearly unchanged.
I have to be honest I was looking to watch this before bed and wasn’t crazy about the narrators voice but this was packed with lots of information and a useful context that you normally don't get in a lot of documentaries. Excellent video you earned a subscription

Very informative video and well put together. Three yrs ago me and my wife visited auzwitch the most humbling place we have ever visited. The lady who took us round had a family relative who was imprisoned there she was one of those ladies you could have sat and listened to all day. Let not the prisoners of auzwitch be forgotten.

I studied WW2 and the Nazis extensively in college and there was information on this video I was not aware of. Very detailed. Well done. The only issue some may have is your pronunciation of Dachau

In the name of the camp DACHAU the "CH" is soft and guttural, not pronounced like a "K". You might also wish to learn the propper pronunciation for the word ECHELON. SHOULDN'T NARRATORS HAVE A BETTER GRASP OF LINGUISTICS?

Actually, the architect of the "Final Solution" was Heydrich, the "man with the iron heart". Himmler talked a big game, but when he visited a concentration camp and watched people actually being gased to death, he threw up.Heydrich, on the other hand, *enjoyed* taking part of torture sessions and was utterly ruthless, shooting even kids in the head in front of their parents. The guy was a true stone cold monster. The only two men above Heindrich in the entire Reich were Goering and Hitler himself. He bossed around generals and high Nazi Party members. It's very similar to Star Wars, with Heydrich being like Vader and there being only 2 men out of millions above him in the pecking order.

I wish Himmler wouldn't have committed suicide. Himmler could have described the conversations he had with Hitler. Who knows if he would have told the truth but I still wish he would have given his account of how everything happened behind the scenes.
I do agree with you in that I wished that Himmler had failed in committing sucide but only because he deserved to be tried in Nuremberg along with his fellow Nazi colleagues like Hermann Goering, Rudolph Hess, and Albert Speer as he deserved to be tried for his role in the Holocaust and found guilty and either sentenced to death and executed via hanging like Hermann Goering nearly was or sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole like Rudolph Hess was although it is likely that Himmler would have been executed like 10 other Nazis tried in Nuremberg were as he committed all 4 criminal counts being crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and a combination of those with him being convicted of all of those counts with him committing crimes against peace by helping make a attack on Germany in a attempt to justify the invasion of Poland, war crimes due to his role in the mass shooting and deaths of civilians and POWs, and crimes against humanity due to his major role in the Holocaust and anyone who was convicted of 3 or all of those charges were sentenced to death and executed via hanging. He deserved to be put on trial and punished as it would bring closure to Holocaust survivors that one of the architects of the Holocaust was tried and punished for his horrible crimes.
No matter how many times I've seen docs on the Nazi's it never seems to truly sink in at just how evil some can be. I grew up w/ my grandfather and his war stories while in the Air Force so this topic is far from new. But it feels just as raw as the 1st time I learned of the sad sickening things that happened. Humans are a messed up species.

My uncle was killed at the Malmedy Massacre, and my grandfather, who was from Slovenia, had relatives who died in concentration camps. So many groups of people the Nazis hated. Even Jehovah’s Witnesses. Who knows where that came from? They might as well just have reached into a hat and pulled out a name of someone or other.
Oh don't worry they'll find some reason to put you in a camp also, unless you're prepared to join them and prove you're loyal by killing a child of one of the out-groups or blowing up one of their churches or something. Great documentary, just one note: Czechoslovakia wasn´t part of Germany pre-war, it was part of the Austrian empire before 1918, so Hitler didn´t go back to the german pre-war boundries as you mentioned in the documentary, he stole what was never his to take.
Correct, it was under Austrian Hungarian Empire. However, Czechoslovakia was Bohemia, which is a German land. Hitler was merely uniting a Germania, or Greater Germany, or Modern German Confederation that was around for hundreds of years. The Anschluss was the unification of all German lands.

I suggest reading David Erving and other historical revisionists to get a better understanding of events.
Albert Speer once quoted Himmler as "Part Schoolmaster, Part Crank".
The documentary forgot to mention that Himmler was so confident in his ability to negotiate separate peace with the western allies that he was rehearsing whether to greet Supreme Allied Commanders Eisenhower and Tedder by bowing before them or offering a handshake.
The fact that he was shocked to be treated like a criminal rather than a national representative has to do with rumours that Himmler had in advance contacted Churchill who in turn was willing to provide some concessions, namely a joint war effort against the Soviet Union, but Himmler started demanding even more and was thereafter set to be eliminated in the interrogation camp but somehow escaped by committing suicide.
I always thought the attempt to negotiate a truce, and join the allies against the USSR, was an act of desperation. The Allies were committed to unconditional surrender by the time of their invasion of Europe.

But the Germans understood the psychique of both the British and Americans that deep beneath they too hated both Russians as a race and their communist ideology. Churchill in reality sympathized with the Germans but was pinned down by Roosevelt. Had a nut crack Republican been the POTUS at the time, there's possibility UK and US(if not France) would've made separate peace with the Germans and redirected their offensive towards the Soviet Union whilst continuing the fight against Japan in SE Asia.

The Americans and British did not trust Stalin. But they nevertheless supported him, even before the US joined the fighting the war, Dec. 7, 1941.
It was an act of desperation on the part of Germans. They were very brutal on the Russian Front. They knew the Russians would exact revenge.
@@charlesvan13 I am aware of that. It's for this reason the plotters of the July 20 incident couldn't have been taken seriously even if they succeeded coz their demands too were the same. Rommel's widow in a post-war interview told the press that the likes of Stauffenberg didn't have trouble with the Nazi regime as long as the OKW was winning, but once the invasion of Russia turned into a disaster and the Americans alongside the British landed in France apart from Italy having already collapsed, the plotters thought their mutual feelings of anticommunism could help settling a truce and renew their offensive against Russia. Himmler too had sensed that defeat was inevitable, so he started making attempts of his own.

A most excellent documentary, about the insanity of a psychopath given immense power by another psychopath, it never ceases to amaze me how such people justify the cruelty they inflict on others, and how people blindly follow such monsters, but monsters create monsters, sadly, seems every generation such horrid people are elected or assigned to positions of power where they are corrupted by wealth and ideolog, such monster are clever enough to convince others that what they are doing is for the best interests of their people, but seldom accept any responsibility or feeling of remorse.…oh the horrible atrocities people do to others for wealth, power and ideology, is almost incomprehensible…

If only that was the case. In reality, we found at the Nuremberg Trials, the real reason was much less complicated. Almost invariably the atrocities were carried out by people who's reasoning was "I was only following orders" "I was just doing what I was told to"
If they had just said "I'm not doing that. It's immoral, illegal, unethical", most atrocities wouldn't have happened.

In the book The Black Watch by Tom Renouf there is an account of the arrest of Sergeant Heinrich Hitzinger of the Special Armoured Company and two companions, by men of the Black Watch manning a bridge across the River Weser at Bremervorde. The men aroused suspicion and on the morning of the 23rd of March the three men were transferred to the base at Barnstedt. On arrival the supposed Sergeant demanded to speak to the Base Commander. On being presented to Captain Selvester he said “Ich bein Herr Heinrich Himmler”. The prisoner’s who in addition to Himmler were a Colonel and a Major of the SS were transferred to British Intelligence at Lunebourg. The uniform was described as being similar to those worn by the German Post Office.
