- One of the many series to take the San Diego Comic-Con stage in Hall H was Netflix’s highly anticipated series, The Sandman. Based on Neil Gaiman's renowned DC comic that some consider to be the greatest comic book series of all time, the series stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, or Dream, one of seven eternal entities who control crucial aspects of existence. The first season of The Sandman is reported to cover the story of The Sandman, Volume 1: Preludes & Nocturnes, which follows Dream’s capture by Roderick Burgess and his occult followers in the early 1900s and his subsequent 105 years in captivity.
While some version of The Sandman has been in development for decades, I can think of no better place for the material than on a streaming service like Netflix. Instead of trying to fit the massive story and incredible set of characters into a two-hour movie, streaming will allow the story to showcase the wondrous world that Gaiman and his team of brilliant artists brought to life on the page.
I’ve seen the first three episodes and cannot wait to see the rest of the show.
Shortly after premiering new footage at Comic-Con, cast members Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and Gaiman stopped by the Collider studio. During the fun interview, they talked about which of the ten-episode first season they’re most excited for people to see, why streaming is the perfect place to tell this story, what they’re excited for both fans and non-fans to experience, and more.
The Sandman's cast also includes Patton Oswalt, Boyd Holbrook, Jenna Coleman, Vanesu Samunyai (formerly known as "Kyo Ra"), Vivienne Acheampong, Charles Dance, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Donna Preston, John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James Young and Razane Jammal.
Dream and Matthew the Raven from Netflix's 'The Sandman' The series is executive produced by Gaiman, Heinberg, and David S. Goyer. The directors of the first season include Mike Barker (101), Jamie Childs (102, 103, 104, 105), Mairzee Almas (106), Andrés Baiz (107, 108), Coralie Fargeat (109), and Louise Hooper (110).

Tom is really good in the role of Morpheus. His physicality is magical, his perfect voice that makes the character so powerful. I hope to see him play other roles
@Gl Fer I'm glad they did not attempt to put the comic version of stars in his eyes. In graphic art that works. In a cinematic representation, it would have looked...odd? Silly? I don't know exactly how to put it into words. Think of goths you've seen with the all black contacts where no white shows around their irises. The just have an uncanny valley look to them that is inherently off putting. It's hard to show intensity of thought or feeling without being able to see someone's eyes. The Corinthian with CGI mouths for eyes works because he's pure nightmare.
In any event, I think it would have distracted and detracted from the multi dimensional depiction of the character on film to make Dream's eyes identical to the graphic novel images..
@Gl Fer im glad they didnt! Imagine if all the movies based on books where made as a total copy of the book. Just look at Harry Potter - green eyes in the book - blue eyes in the movie. The value of the movies/series is also in those little things in plot and/or physical looks that are different from books/comics etc
@Gl Fer Tom talked in a different interview about how they originally had him looking much closer to the comic version (paler skin, longer messy hair, and the dark eyes) and they all looked at him and said “He looks ridiculous” so they stripped it back a bit to make it look less cartoonish.
I totally agree! Also I noticed that Dream is stoic most of the time but conveys his thoughts and emotions very, very subtile. Often it doesn't take more that a slight eye movement or the hint of a smirk and I imagine this delicate acting is very hard.
The fact that Mason loves episode 5 and does a little mischievous giggle at the end. They ARE Desire! 😆 👍
Human desire got unchecked in that episode, so horrifying. Desire would love to see the world like that, desire and despair hand in hand!
@@augustinefaithdefender that's why they're twins 😉
Their little giggle while saying that episode is “such a delight” got me 😂
Mason’s inner desire is showing lmao i literally got traumatized watching that episode i was so glad when dream finally appeared right through the ending
I adore that Tom is holding the microphone for his cast members.
I can't wait to see more of Desire in season two. Super Charismatic Mason Alexander Park
They are in it a little, with no spoilers. Showrunners might write them into more subtle places too since the character is well liked.
Watching Mason was mesmerizing. Such a great talent, hoping to see more Mason!
So let me just say, I literally cannot get enough of Mason right now. They're my absolute latest crush. Anyway, I love that Mason is so expressive in such a real way during this interview with Neil. You can so tell that they're refreshed by Neil's style as their boss. You just know that Mason is so thrilled to be there and my gosh, isn't it so lovely to have an actor who actually really wanted that role. Someone who really embodies that ancient character. It's perfection.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I feel exactly the same!
You can see how much Mason admires Neil and just how happy they are to be a part of this project.
I love the casting. Every single one of the actors seems to be perfect for their role
I'm so glad the stars aligned for all of them to come together at the right time. It such a beautiful, respectful depiction of Neil's work. I loved all 10 episodes and I'm crossing fingers for more seasons. There's so much more to tell! 🤞🖤🙌🌟
11
I was confused tho on why they said 10 episodes but the episodes that was displayed in netflix was 11 eps??
@@ma.kisshaannb.ravago1512 I was confused too but they added an extra episode! Ep10 is the finale, 11 is a bonus.
Really loving the series & it was so perfectly cast. All the actors really fit their roles & I’ve loved all of it so far. Hope there’s a lot more to come. I knew nothing of the comic, and did just stumble across it & absolutely love it because it is so unique & changeable, just like dreams
Mason is so beautiful and their smile... Too beautiful... 💞😍
Fun fact: Tom Sturridge & Robert Pattinson have been friends since they were children. They went to school together in London. Rob was also at The Sandman premiere after-party recently
Is it really necessary to write this literally on every single one of his interviews?
I reported as spam, I saw so many comments the same like this in every sandman related video! Stop, we knew already!
I feel like Bruce Wayne and Dream would be friends.
That you, Rob?
Yes, we know that, i think the whole world knows! But can we just stop talking about Pattinson. Sturridge is the one who should be praised here!
Ep.6 is sublime, death is beautiful, it's just a great experience
So far after watching the series twice, I love episode 6. I earned watching that episode. And the depiction of Death holding the dying woman 's hand made be hope she was there to hold my Mother's.
I have read most of Neil Gaiman's bibliography(The Sandman and Neverwhere being my favorites) and the closer it gets to Friday, the faster my heart beats! I cannot imagine my expectations getting any higher and I just hope that I remember to breathe lol!
The Sandman is one of my favorite series ever.
I love Neil Gaimen and his stories.
This cast is amazing! I really like them. And, Tom as Dream is literally a dream.
God, you can tell how refreshing they all find it to not have their accolades regurgitated in their introductions. It really made them tune into the conversation and give much more earnest answers than I've seen in contemporary interviews. Kudos to the interviewer.
I just love how gwen always brings her humor in every interview 😂😂
Epi 6 is my fav of S1 ❤︎I shed some tears not gonna lie 🥲
Not Desire casually dropping Delight’s name at the end…
I’m onto you my dear Sibling.
Such a lovely assemblage of artists and creators from such a superb show!
I remember saving up my pocket money to buy sandman and hanging around in bookstores to read the issues we couldn't afford. It was so exciting to see how the iconic scenes were adopted into another medium. Lovely cast and amazing how it was put into modern context. Really it shows how timeless is the plot. I just wish for the series to go more into more surreal direction than Harry Potter cdi effects.
BRAVO to Neil and all those involved to bring the comic to life. This is how award winning shows are created. This is also what you want to see in an interview, the cast fully embracing the roles they were given and talking about the source material and showing great love for Neil's work. This show has so much award winning potential.
My favorite episode is the same as tom , episode 6 the every 100 years part of dream and hob was touch down the best thing i’ve ever watch i felt crying went they got reunited after 200 years!!
I love the hob scene..
This show was perfectly cast.
The cast is so perfect for their roles, and I really hope Netflix renews it for more seasons! I’m a new fan of Sandman, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the books to read them soon.
Very interesting 🤔
A new dimension!
You ain’t kidding !
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This cast is SO PERFECTION I can't even ♥
Am I the only one who have a huge crush on Mason after seeing them as Desire?😍😍😍😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫
Nice
ep 5 was really hard to watch but I got past it wanna put a medal on mahselp... Beautiful cast and show loovveee iiitt!!
Episode 5 gave me nightmare man
Desire 😍😍😍😍😍
I loved the show! I am planning a gender bend Morpheus costume for Halloween.
The pacing of this shw was masterful
Could have introduced NG, not for the audience, but out of care and respect to him as the creator and author.
Wow. Two of the sexiest men I have ever seen such talent in the whole cast. I'm so glad to be apart of this and see these men blossom.
The answer is 6, definitely 6.
It would definitely suck as a movie, just look at Avatar the last Airbender.
Many words come to mind when thinking about episode 5, but 'a delight' is not one of them... Mason, you alright?
ye gods Mason is so beautiful
Who's the man in the right to the interviewer? 🤔
This series shows the meanings in deep allegories and metaphors that an ordinary underdeveloped ram cannot reveal. Only people are able to see in this series the revealed logic and metamorphoses of the planetary control system. The film is similar to the meanings of the American Gods-1 series. Netflix is rich in such masterpieces. And the actors themselves are just puppets who do not even understand what and who they are portraying in reality. Netflix! Keep shooting new things in this concept. All of you are grateful for the language of allegories and metaphors.
I wonder if Desire can affect his/her Brothers & Sisters Desire...or it just affect Humans
First 6 episode warner bros, other 4 is like netflix quality. I dunno but i didnt like the last four episodes.
Why put WB produced show on Netflix?
Money.
HBO didn't want to pay for it
Man I hope this show is at least somewhat decent
The fact that it’s on Netflix scares the shit out of me
If it makes you feel better it’s created by the same WB producing team that wouldve made it on HBO Netflix just bought distribution.
@@FlickNReel Right, right. Neil Gaiman said it himself at 3:38-3:39.
They had full control over the show. It is going to be good. Netflix is just financing and broadcasting it. The direction is WB itself along with Geimen. It's enough to keep my hopes up.
Will be good 👍
it is good
I wish Desire was more present. The Death episode was great, the Satan bits feel really disconnected like the SW Prequels. Directing is very uneven and I think more practical fx would have done a better job. There's no difference in the lighting between the dream world and some of the real world scenes. The material is so good I'm forgiving a bunch of mediocre directorial choices.
Haven’t read the comics, I just trust Neil Gaiman lmao (not netflix)
Dolls House was so disappointing but the 11th episode took it back up
first 5 episodes was good but then it gets clusterfucked
I'm really enjoying this show even with its obvious political undertones which normally sees me walk away from shows like this but here I am.
Seriously wearing a Marvel shirt....
The introduction part was kind a cringy.
bro i aint neva heard the blonde lady on the right talk before and she got a deeper voice than i do lmbo
Episode 5 was the best episode for me and 6th the weakest. The 5th was shockingly effective in portraying emotional depth and complexity among characters we had not met, regrettably with over-the-top gore, while the 6th was silly with Death's positive spin on the loss of life. When people died she glided along leaving destruction and despair among their loved ones. Dream had limited, biased training in those scenes.
Did... Did they purposefully put the black person at the center? 🤦♂️
That isn't an issue
@@klaojungwiwattanaporn6927
Virtue signaling is always an issue.
@@Ukaran It wasn't virtue signaling.
Don't read into everything just to be offended man
Las cosas que te oprimen son raras amigo.
Just too messy, should have stuck with a single story, doing the first two just just failed. It had no natural flow. Its 40/60 that we will watch Season 2. If it goes more anthologies, then yawn, nope. That was the biggest failing of the comic, wait a month, and a one off story that doesn't move the narrative along. Think i gave up at issue 50 Ramadan.
Such a mediocre show...
