This. The D12 is the most pleasing to me, shape wise. Never need them, but I still love them.

There is a D12 in the video. It just has 1-6 pips on its sides twice each to be used as a rounder W6.

I have a set of odd numbered dice. While playing D&D I asked if I can roll a D7 instead of a D6+1 for my one attack. He thought I was joking and agreed. I took out the D7 and the whole table came to a halt and after what seemed like a trial, they were voted to not be allowed. I still bring a lot of different dice (coin, flip, oversized, foam) and everyone just...rolls with it.

Have you thought about stacking your dice up? Making a tall vertical structure out of them? A tower if you will.

That was much cooler than I expected it to be! You need to buy a cheap secondhand copy of Parker Bros.' Hearts game, just so you can add the wooden "cubes" to your collection. :)

Tiny dice are great for kid's math games. Put 3 of them in a tiny clear cup (like an ingredient cup) and have the kids shake them. They then have to make equations with the 3 numbers. Stuff like that. Doesn't take up much room and the dice don't get lost.

The fairness of the 7 sided die depends on the surface you roll it on. It is not equally fair on hard and soft surfaces like normal dice are.

  • @saltheart2023

I know people often complain about the sharp cut dice.... but, in theory, they should roll more true as the very flat sides with sharp edges will keep then from rolling endlessly... when they land on a side they should stay put more often than not. 🙂 The Tumble Smoothed dice tend to roll more and may have certain sides that become "favored" by the inaccuracy of the cut.... That's the theory anyway... Cheers! Thanks for sharing your interesting dice!

That d36 Tom showed functions as a double d6. Each face has white dots representing a 2d6 roll. I'm kind of surprised he didn't point that out when it hit the table.

Instead of a D4, it'd be great if the Triple D4 out of a D12 were made. Or maybe a Quintuple D4 out of a D20. D4s are just so awkward and don't roll nicely.

  • @joeferreti9442

It is quite pointless to have more than D6 and D20, although D10 and D12 are somewhat useful. You can fairly easily simulate most other numbers with D6 or D20 by doing multiple throws and/or by rerolling certain values. You just have to be careful to not skew the probabilities. It's also preferable to simulate a coin toss with a D6 (1-3, 4-6), because easier to execute. Same for D3 which works perfectly with a D6 (1-2, 3-4, 5-6).
D6 and D20 also have the best shapes for rolling, although D12 are ok, too. For example the shapes of D8 and D10 are not overall evenly distributed. That said dice are not only useful for rolling to generate random numbers but are also useful to keep state as markers and counters. D6 are best for that because they don't tip over easily.
Also, custom dice (those with custom symbols on the dice sides) can be easily simulated with normal dice by using a table to map the values to symbols.
Lastly, I think, D20 are fairly underused in board games, although D20 are very useful to have probabilities in 5% steps. The only board game I know that makes use of something similar is Twilight Imperium which uses D10 for having probabilities in 10% steps. The commonly used D6 are fairly weird in that respect with its 16,666% steps.
(Yes, I know RPGs like D&D use D20.)
