  • Hey everyone Rho here! Today we're discussing the Doom of Rynn's World, with the fall of the Arx Tyrannus! Are the Crimson Fists actually luckier than we first believed to have won at all?
    Spoiler Warning to begin as the events we're discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novels "Rynn's World" by Steve Parker and "Legacy of Dorn" by Mike Lee. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first, without spoilers! As that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself!

    Problem with the maintenance is: You have 5 buckets. Sounds great untill you realise, you have 20 holes in your roof.
    It sounds like they fell behind, but the imperium as it is now is surviving in a frantic crisis-mode, so you patch up what is important at that moment, put out the fires, that are realy a bit close for compfort and hope, you will get arround to the one burning a bit off the track, before it bites you. It is not so much different from how politics work today: Fix the immediate problem and hope, that someone else is in charge, when the flaming ball of manuer you chose to ignore for one reason or another comes crushing down.

    Kantor. You think he's a good guy. The Crimson Fists were basically placing bets on when she would die. He only became 'good' when he realized his army was in the same exact position that she was. I love the story, but everyone forgets the beginning of it.
    The problem with the Crimson Fists is hardly unique to them. Hubris. The word you dance around is hubris. The defenses on the planet are lax, rusted and generally forgotten. Why? Space marines. They normally would fly out in their ships to attack things. The idea that something coming to their stronghold? Inconceivable. Look at Baal, Sotha, Macragge. ALL OF THEM HAD THE SAME ISSUE. The books to prove that? Devastation of Baal, Scythes of the Emperor, and like three different Horus Heresy books for the Ultramarines. Know no fear, Mark of Calth, Angels of Caliban.
    Hubris is the space marines constant Achilles heel.

    • @TheLH86
      @TheLH86 Před rokem +8

      You're right, hubris is a constant issue for the Astartes in general, likely a side effect of their transhuman nature.
      In their defence in this regard, I'm sure there is more to rhe upkeep of a chapter homeworld defenses than just the marines themselves. If you think about their role in the big picture strategic defence of the wider imperium, and the material available to us, most of the chapter is never at home to begin with.
      Your about companies are consumed with training and preparation of the next generation of recruits, while any returning line companies or strike forces are usually re arming and refitting for immediate redeployment.
      I can see easily how allowing the mortal defence forces to assume responsibility for maintaining their own defences would in turn free up warriors and resources to be spent on their primary role.
      Does this mean they're blameless for the lack of foresight and preparation? No absolutely not, but it does mitigate somewhat the unqualified shade being thrown at the chapter for this.
      Most of the people criticising them for their actions have never had to make critical decisions to weigh up where there are no good choices to make, and never will.
      Yeah this example is a Sci fi fantasy, sure, but you can find hundreds of examples of the results of this kind of thinking and consequences in just recent history, so I hardly think it's just hubris, nor is it a flaw unique to the Astartes.
      If anything it simply marks them as still being human, despite everything.

    @udp1073 Před rokem +1

    Son of Dorn or not, there is a reality check in this: resource are contested and contended. you need to provide for a large number of urgent matters so you give priorities, menace in the void? did the Crimson fist took a a 400 years R&R (Rest and Repose for the uninintiated)? or have them waged war on other planet? did the homeworld provide for the fleet or have they just ammasses resource and luxury? considering "grim dark future" and "there is only war" to me it is without doubdt that they focused on supply a war somwhere else than preparing for one on world.. so, yes, they made a mistake, one that had been made many many time, both in real life and in lore. Now, Wolf Lord Rho mentioned an "inquisitorial" intervention on the missile going rogue. I am not an expert on the Crimson Fist lore, can somebody point me in the right direction on this? I freaking hate the inquisition (well, most of it anyway)... so I would love to read some more stuff about this alleged conflict between the Crimson Fst and the basterd

      As far as I know the Crimson Fists and the Inquisition enjoy cordial relations. As in they do not register on the Inquisitions radar as troublesome. They were used against a chapter that had been declared rogue, they are very codex compliant, nothing seems to suggest Inquisition sh1tlist. It's not like the Black Templars with their secret legion size, making Inquisitors that investigate them 'disappear' and butting heads with the Inquisition over the Celestial Lions.

By offering up Rynns world to the Orks, the Ork Warlord would be drawn out! Still, a very big risk if it went wrong. As regards the unpreparedness of Rynns world, the up keep of the planets defenses was the responsibility of the planetary rulers! To quote Dorn, "I want warriors, not vassals!"

    To be fair the chapter only had the world for around 1200 years prior to the events of the novel, prior to which they were an entirely fleet based crusading chapter not unlike the Black Templars. That being the case I don't think in the intervening nine millennia there's an established culture to build defenses for the Crimson Fists simply because they haven't needed to. The world has around 200 million people on it, mostly farmers. A fully militarized Rynns World, vs what they had still loses only slightly slower than what happened in this novel. Simply put, there was never a chance to have an Armageddon style setup with unlimited resources being thrown into the furnace by the native people and their industry. In short, could more have been done, sure, but in the Crimson Fists' defense barring their disastrous bad luck, they were as prepared as they needed to be to protect what they felt was the most important, which was their fortress in a remote mountain chain with stores and stores of supplies, not a world's population they didn't even recruit from.

  • @andrewwatts2443
    @andrewwatts2443 Před rokem

    The issue is partly down to the splitting of the Legions into Chapters. Chapters are much smaller and spend most of there time spread out far and wide. The local miltary forces likely expected the Chapter to have been more hands on.
    You can't compare most of the Chapters to the Ultra Marines given there build empires, it's in their makeup to build and control entire planets. Most of the other chapters are merely visitors. The Chapter dropped the ball because they should have checked the defences that they likely built and were solid at the time, periodically.
    However the planets human defenders took it for granted that by having a chapter based they would be defended.
