As a former Subaru tech, and a lifetime Subaru owner, this only makes me appreciate them more. It’s says a lot about the company that they are willing to admit that they made mistakes and are willing to pay for those mistakes. A lot of other manufacturers would avoid it or act like it wasn’t a problem, so hats off to Subaru for doing the right thing. Also loving all the Subaru content keep up the great work!

Which is why they had to be hit with a lawsuit over their ej pistons, or why they think it’s within normal range to burn up to a quart of oil every 1200 miles on a brand new car. Or why they say their stock tunes are the best but have been proven to run dangerously lean and knock prone on turbo models just to meet emissions requirements.

As an Alaskan that has owned 4 Subarus (90 Legacy wagon, 99 outback, 07 CRV, 2017 Legacy, 2022 Outback) I've been through rust issues, a broken/rusted front coil spring and blown head gaskets on the first two. The 2017 we traded in for the 2022 because the battery was always dying if it wasn't driven in 3 days. Was bummed out on last month we parked the 2022 at the airport for two weeks and the battery was dead when we got back. The dealer response is we can sell you a trickle charger. Sad thing about CVT land, they keep beating a dead horse. With modern 9 and 10 speed automatics there is no real gain anymore to a CVT like when 5 and 6 speed autos were the mainstream. They need to axe them and move on. In a traction issue the non cvt will be much better as it doesnt have those heat issues.

This is a huge concern for me. Having a recall of this magnitude would really suck. I am a hardcore DIY and certified mechanic, and the beauty of a new car (to me) is no one else has yet worked on it and everything is pristine. I buy a Subaru because I plan to work on it myself. I want to be the one to screw it up not someone else. Saying, "don't worry its under warranty" doesn't acknowledge the fact that I have to put up with an unknown person of unknown skill doing warranty work on the new car which I had hoped would be pristine when it came time for me to service it. Who knows what he or she may bugger up or not put back into original locations. I sure hope Subaru gets their quality control issues back in order.

What may be added to the CVT/sealant issues with newer Subaru vehicles are the issues showing up on the Subaru forums regarding the cracking windshields and faulty/wonky/failing entertainment systems. There appears to be a great deal of grumbling about new vehicles with these problems. Some are reporting replacement windshield cracking fairly quickly after being installed. The entertainment system from reports appears to be erratic in operation and needing several updates from Subaru chasing down issues. I like Subarus quite a lot and currently own 3 of them. I would disagree that the CVT was not an issue in the past. Our 13 Crosstrek with a CVT had the dash light up like a Christmas tree and the codes pointed to the "controller". The car had 53k miles, so it got a new tranny per warranty. At 150k, we got the light up again. The car appeared to drive fine both times. This time, it was on my dime and the solenoid control block needed to be replaced because Subaru doesn't sell separate solenoids, so it was $800 for the part and whatever the mechanic charged. So yes, there certainly have been CVT issues in early transmissions.

I do feel maybe in the last decade Subaru's pivot from being a quirky niche market vehicle into a mainstream car brand, that overall quality appears continued to trend downward a bit. Some of it is supply side, and some of it i feel is a result of packing obsoleting technology over solid longterm quality.
As someone who was loyal to GM (a model of quality throughout the 90s and 00s...lol) for a longtime before moving to Honda (who at least locally, wouldn't stand behind anything once I took delivery) and then ultimately to Subaru.. Subaru's easy sales process and overall commitment to seeking resolution to issues has been what keeps me coming back to the brand. That said, I have been very wary of considering a new model Outback with these CVT chain concerns, oil leaks, and the seemingly endless windshield cracking issues. All coming at a significantly higher pricetag. My 15 OB has had minor issues over the last 165k miles but mechanically continues to serve me reliably. So I can hold out another year or 2 for things to really get back on track.

I have a 2020 Forester. There are a lot of great things I love about the car and some that I really don't like. These are the things that have my attention:
    1) The AC compressor has a loud washing machine noise it makes at times when the AC isn't on. This has happened since I bought it. I had it replaced due to a service bulletin and it still makes the noise with the new compressor. It is definitely something that Subaru should look into because it is embarrassing on their part. Its very noticeable and so many people have complained about it.
    2) One of my Harman Kardon speakers crackles. It will do this from time to time, and volume level plays isn't a factor in the production of this sound. Its the speaker located on the top left of the dash.
    3) Noises have appeared in the front passenger side (loose interior parts?) and around the steering wheel. They are very noticeable buzzing/vibrating noises that give off the impression of loose parts and/or something being broken.
    4) The engine feels off. Its hard to explain because I'm no mechanic or auto specialist, and my knowledge is elementary at best, but the best way I can describe it is a jerking and braking feeling when it hits certain speeds. This is my first time owning a car with a CVT engine, so I believed my concern to be a product of the fact I just wasn't used to it yet (coming from a 2001 Toyota Tundra its a bit of a shock). I've mentioned it to the multiple dealerships and none of them have given me a reason except for the shifting is programmed into the car to make it feel like the car shifts because a CVT never shifts gears, hence the Continuously Variable Transmission. Can someone tell me if this is correct? I thought CVT engines were meant to be smooth? Also to further complicate the issue, many people on the Subaru Forums have said this issue is because of the following:
"....the OEM filter comes with SUBARU is thick and it causes less air to pass to engine which causes jerking and hesitation during low acceleration from 0-25MPH, especially if humidity is >80% and you're driving around town.
To fix this issue completely you need to do the following things:
    1. Drop in a K&N air filter that allows more air to go inside the engine which enhances and smoothes the acceleration by 90%.
    2. Replace the transmission fluid with AMSOIL CVT which provides better performance and protection."
I apologize for the essay, but I just wanted to get my experience out there, hoping that I could get some feedback in any way. I love the car overall despite these concerns of mine. Its a good looking vehicle and its served my wife and I very well...I just hope I can get these concerns addressed. I'm taking my car in for the noises in the speaker and dash area, but the AC compressor and engine concerns seem to be out of my control at the moment until I gather more information.

I have had four in the past 9 years and currently have two; a 2018 Outback Limited and 2019 Ascent Touring. The only lingering issues with the Outback is a leaking rear hatch (NOT around the 3rd brake light) and are about to roll 102K miles. On the other hand, the laundry list of issues with the Ascent is growing, and creaks and rattles from just about every area of the vehicle, including but not limited to the headliner held on with velcro, intercooler seal, something under the passenger side rear captain’s chair, both front seal cooling fans squealing, moon roof weather strip, moon roof power slides and three recalls. These include two for the aforementioned CVT chain tension, the guide and fuel pump impeller. We have just rolled 50K miles and will probably not be returning to Subaru for another one.

My 2006 Legacy Wagon had quite a second life at the shop. Head gaskets at about 100K. Dealer replaced. Leaked about two miles/months after their warranty expired. I liked the car enough to do head gaskets again (slow learner?) Independent shop replaced the OEM with what they said are better. It ran great for over 80K at which time I sold it and bought a 2018 Outback. Second owner. Nice car. Just changed CVT fluid and independent shop which I hope will not void any warranty which I paid for at the dealer. I’m wondering after listening to you on this episode if I should contact the dealer on the recall/evaluation of CVT? I’ve not received any notices which may be due to my not being the original owner. By the way, you said head gasket problems were past tense. My daughter has a 2013 legacy. Head gaskets blew at 112K. Big bucks. The same independent shop told me all Subs have the gasket problem and Sub won’t admit it. Many opinions and varied statements on QC. All makes seem to be cutting the same corners. No matter what you buy, enter at your own risk?? My best car in over fifty years is a 2002 Lexus IS 300. Going strong at 200K.

I bought a new Impreza 2.5RS in 2003, and soon noticed a bunch of loose 10mm bolts. And sure enough, there was a recall to tighten them up (which I had done to some of them, but not to spec). After getting over that, I then learned about the head gasket problem. So, early on I wasn't so sure about Subaru quality. I mean, if they couldn't even get all the bolts tightened, what else did they miss? But, I went on the drive that car for 19 years without any major problems. So I'm not too worried about quality issues with my new Crosstrek.

My 2021 Legacy Touring XT was discovered to have an oil pan leak at the first oil change last summer. Fortunately it was the lower pan so the entire engine didn't have to be pulled, but due to the parts shortage it took two weeks to get the gasket kit and have it repaired. Thankfully they gave me a loaner. Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in my purchase. Plus while it was in there I had them check the weak AC (operating within specifications according to the tech) and uneven power delivery at times (surging+hesitating+hard fake shifts). Also told nothing was wrong. Even before all this I've had it in twice chasing loud rattles in the dash and around the Eyesight cameras that cropped up at 1,000 miles. Its my first Subaru and it will definitely be my last. My cheap 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer I bought new never had a single repair and even after ten years didn't have as many rattles as this new Legacy. gotta say this all kinda started with the FA/FB engine platform. EJ platform was well established (but is had its growing pains--ala HG issues). I think quality control is being addressed as identified and they are loyal to their customer base. That customer base is geared to geographical regions of the country where weather/traction are challenges and therefore its in their interest to address and keep customer loyalty going. Overall would purchase again as we have been a Subie fam since 2003 with one FB (2016 Legacy) and the remainder in the EJ platform. They will overcome and put their best efforts forward in fixing the shortcoming --issues identified.

My new 2011 Outback had a CVT problem @114k miles, Subaru replaced the CVT valve body at no cost to me. They also paid for 50% of my cost to replace 2 rear wheel bearings which were out of warranty. I am trading that Outback @159k for a 2023 Forester that I just ordered. Subaru of America does stand behind their products!

But why? Why not make it right the first time. What’s crazy is the CVT fiasco is so easily fixable.
Just let it be serviceable with flushes and filter changes. The sealed unit crap should be a felony at this point.

I have a 2020 Outback and 2021 Legacy. Both purchsed new. Both non-turbo. Are notices being sent only to affected vehicle owners? Never received any recall notices.

Hello God bless you, I would love for you to take a look at my subaru forester 05, since I changed the engine for a Japanese version EJ20, and it has a fault code in cylinder 4. I already changed the spark plugs, the cables, the injectors, the fuel pump and the filter, and even if it has a fault. The fault consists in the fact that when accelerating it gives a small fault like a spark plug and then it accelerates normally and this only does it when starting the march

The quality control issues scare me. If someone paid like $30,000 on a new car and have quality control issues. That’s really no excuse. That’s why I like used vehicles that sometimes generally have issues fixed long time ago. I never owned a Subaru in my life. Altho I like them. I currently own a Toyota.

We just got the VIN for our 2023 BRZ and waiting impatiently for it to arrive. This will be our first official Subaru, besides the EJ25 I put in an old Bug :) Just hope we do not see the silicon issue.

I work in engine at the Lafayette plant and the rtv has always been applied by robots. The rtv has been almost completely replaced with 2 part sealer now besides the fuel pump case and the valve covers.

Thanks for the information. I'm in the market for either a new Outback or Toyota Crown. Crowns are hard to come by so we were seriously considering the Outback. After this video, I'll wait for the Crown which I estimate will cost about $10,000 more.😂
