This scene , without exaggeration , traumatized me when I was a kid. Everything about it. Veruca getting pinned down by an army of rabid squirrels while screaming for her dad to help and Mr. Salt desperately trying to break in as he is forced to watch his 12 year old ( I assume that's her age ) daughter get thrown down a deep , dark hole that leads into the firey pits of hell. Good thing the incinerator was broken.
One thing that didn’t make sense in my mind: Why in the world didn’t Mr Salt jump over the fence and run in? Age, dignity, and athleticism all go out of the window when it is your literal child at stake.
They weren't rabid. That's just your imagination embellishing the truth. Not to psychoanalyze you or anything, but if you have to demonize a squirrel in order to feel superior to it, especially if it is trained for a productive task, then it says a lot more about you than you might guess...
The father didn’t really want to do anything himself, he showed concern, but didn’t even bother to do anything before or after, he rather let the squirrels do whatever they wanted with his daughter while he watched in horror from the safety of the fence xd

Same here! I like how it’s actually more true to the book, for example 1. The story of Prince Pondicherry 2. The squirrels 3. The lyrics to the Oompa Loompa songs 4. Wonka saying he won instead of the whole “you stole fizzy lifting drinks!” thing 5. It shows the children leaving the factory …plus I like the addition of Wonka’s backstory and how he finally reunited with his dad. However…if there ARE some good things about the 70’s version…it’s that Veruca acts more like a spoiled brat there. And the Oompa Loompa song and the I Want It Now song are pretty catchy too. I like the genuine smile of approval Wonka has when Mr. Salt gently refuses Veruca’s demand for a squirrel-and the awkward grimace when he realizes that they learned nothing and that she’s about to disqualify herself. He thought maybe his message about spoiled and entitled kids had got through to one of the parents! Instead he visibly deflates as she’s listing out her pets and when her father gives in, he accepts that she’s too far gone and shit is about to go down lol
Meanwhile her father couldn’t be bothered to jump over gate cause ‘elegance’ or whatever. If that’s his response to his daughter in mortal danger than no wonder Veruca became like this. Her father simply didn’t want to deal with the extra work in actually raising her.
God, I loved this film as a child and even now years later I still really enjoy it. The visuals are so nice, the acting is great and funny, and it actually is closer to the novel than the original film.

Veruca listing all of her pets is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. She already has a big zoo of animals at home, and of course, being the spoiled rich girl that she is, she just wants more.
Moral of the story: Don’t raise your kids to be spoiled brats and do a better job at disciplining them, teaching them to be thankful for what they have, etc.

It's a shame Julia Winter never did any other acting after this, because she was fantastic in this film.
