Son Seals does On My Knees live on TV in th '80's. Snapper Mitchum on bass and I don't know the rest of the guys except the drummer I've seen before but I don't know his name.
This is my grandpa I thank him everyday for the voice I have he gave it to my dad and my dad gave it to me I swear some day I will make you proud grandpa and I will be on that stage where you use to be I love and miss you so much R.I.P
Many years ago, I was blessed that my son took me to see your amazing grandfather play in Ames, Iowa at the ISU Memorial Union. The house was packed, and he totally tore it up on that Guild guitar. He blew us all away. I'll never forget him. BTW, he's already proud of you.
Saw him often, hell of a nice guy. So many times I had a drink with him at the bar he was playing in. Have autographs on the photos I took of him, he was so humble and just down right cool... LOVED Son!
You're correct that the drummer is Vince Chappelle, who played for years with Koko Taylor, and the keyboards are King Solomon. Rhythm guitar is indeed Mike Gibb. I don't remember this TV shoot. Son recorded Midnight Son with a Silvertone knockoff of a Gibson 335. His debut album was cut on a Norma guitar, sort of a Fender Jaguar knockoff, and some kind of piggyback Fender; I'm not sure it was a Bassman. I believe (but not sure) that Midnight Son was cut on a Super Reverb. It was shortly after that that I found the dark green Guild Starfire 4 that you see here, and negotiated with the owner to get the price down so Son could afford it. He played it for years.
I heard that he bought the Starfire from Bumble Bee Bob Novak. In any case, it was funny that he was in a bunch of Guild ads holding a Guild guitar that he bought used. 😀
I used to hang with Son Seals at Albert's Hall when he played in Toronto in the mid 80's. Back then they would play the whole week, 2 or 3 sets a night. He was a good man of few words and with his band HE was the boss. When he played the air in the club was charged with static electricity. He'd be 3 feet from your table wailing and you knew you were witnessing something great !! RIP.

Frank Seals AKA Son Seals: 8/13/1942 - Award-winning guitarist and singer who began to perform professionally as a drummer at the age of 13 for harpist and slide player Robert Nighthawk before picking up the six-string at 16. He would sit in with a number of top tier blues musicians in his hometown of Osceola, such as Albert King and Rosco Gordon, before heading to Chicago in 1971. Discovered and signed by Alligator Records, the guitarist’s first album, entitled The Son Seals Blues Band, was released in 1973. He remained active until his passing in 2004 and was the recipient of numerous Blues Music Awards.
Saw this guy in a small club in Toronto shortly before he passed. he had to be helped to the stage and sat on a stool to play but i was amazed at how lightning fast he was even though he was ill. A Real Bl
When I lived in Chicago in the 70s-80s, I fell in love with Son Seals and his hard-driving live shows. Son's fans should keep an eye out for Tampa-based bluesman Selwyn Birchwood, who won the IBC about six years ago, and has incorporated some of that Son Seals funk-magic into his own style.
It's a shame that great guitarists like Son Seals, Earl Hooker, Otis Rush (just to name a few) are mostly forgotten about and never achieved the fame they deserved. But that's the blues for ya and despite the efforts of guys like SRV, Johnny Winter and Billy Gibbons (just to name a few) to give them the credit they deserved, it was marginal at best. I never had the honor and pleasure of seeing Mr Seals play but he clearly was the total package - talent, great voice & good looks! RIP Son Seals, your greatness will never be forgotten
Mike Gibb was a good friend of mine. We used to party with the band after the show from time to time.Snapper, King, Mike, and at the time the drummer was a guy named David. Son was definitely the Boss. I also saw Son later in his career in Indiana. He was still Amazing. Love to read that his grandson is following in his footsteps! Last I heard Mike was in Tampa.
Amazing. I also heard him at So's Your Mother in DSM, and Tom Sacco is right--he electrified the audience. I am glad to hear that his son and grandson are carrying on his love of music. What a gift.
Saw him several times in Toronto at Albert's hall up stairs at the Brunswick house. There was so much hotting and hollering surprised the floor didn't cave in.
@bluesallstars Thanks for confirming that the keyboards were being played by King Solomon. It was hard for me to be sure because the glipses were not clear. I'm sad to report that last week on Jan. 30th 2012 he passed on. He's my Great Great Uncle and I was researching his history with Son Seals and Alligator Records to present at his memorial. This video will be helpful in my presentation, so thanks also to McSampler for the post.
I used to see Son Seals like 40+ years ago, generally at Queen Bee's on South Chicago. As for the drummer, someone posted it was Burt "Tophat" Robinson .... I am now convinced that everything pops up on the internet eventually. (It may be Burt, he did sit in with Son Seals and was on at least one album (and irrc he was related to Snapper), but he was a lot skinnier when I knew him in the early 1970s)
Son's playing through a Randall Solid State Amp in this video. I wish it was the piggy back Fender Bassman. First time I ever heard Son Seals he had me in less than two measures, can't remember if it was "I Believe" or "On My Knees" both on "Midnight Son". Was I a fanatic? I can still recite the back cover of "Midnight Son" - what's that say to ya?
Vince Chappelle on drums! Wow. No wonder I didn't recognize him. When I knew him he had a big pompadour when he was with Koko Taylor. But now that you mention it he was a left-handed drummer and it sounds just like him.
I might have been close to the last person to see Son alive. Saw him play at Kingston mines, he took a leak at the urinal next to me. As I finished I patted him on the back, told him he rocked, 2 days later he was dead.......Sorry

No Bullshit. Good l have turning people on and listening your grandpa for 45 years. I will keep my eyes and ears out for you. Good luck.
Your grandpa was a big part of the reason I play guitar.

In VERY loving memory of Mr. Frank "Son" Seals (1942 - 2004 R.I.P. Gone but NOT forgotten).

I saw him live in Seattle in the late 80"s he was incredible! The real deal! If you did"nt see him live you don"t know really great he was.

One of the all-time greats. Saw him many times at Kingston Mines. So much fun.
One of my all time favorites. I used to go to see Son Seals at B.L.U.E.S. whenever he played. Awesome.

saw him around this time at Jonathan Swift's in Cambridge. he was on fire, most exciting club show ever.
I saw him at Johnathan Swifts about this time too. I wonder if it was the same show?!?!? I was about 15 yrs old, my dad got me in.
A favorite

I saw him live in NYC and just like in the video it was one of the smoking hottest shows I'd ever seen, very very underrated musician
Thank You
I saw him at Williams College in 1984, of all the unlikely venues.

Your Grandpa was Great! I used to go Watch his show at a Club on Elbow Street in Providence...
Best Vid on UTube !
It's all connected. He plays an Albert King lick at 0:42. It doesn't sound planned. It sounds more like it is in his DNA.
Son Seals played drums for Albert King before he took up guitar
My Bad Boy Son Seals RIP
Diese Finger! Genial!!!!

That's Mike Gibb on guitar, King Solomam on keys, and Vince |Chappelle on drums. this was around 1980-81

My name is Allison and I followed the band around for a couple of years. Good times!
Here's a guy who could just tear up his guitar.None of the 3-chord-only nonsense
Oh Man !
adorei
the drummer also used to play along with Bill Weathers
I might have been close to the last person to see Son alive. Saw him play at Kingston mines, he took a leak at the urinal next to me. As I finished I patted him on the back, told him he rocked, 2 days later he was dead.......Sorry
The acct is in my husband's name, I am Allison 😉
King Solomon on Keyboards,

I think that may be Bert "TopHat" Robertson on the Drums
It is Vince Chappelle.
Vince Chapelle.

(Not related to him.)
It's Vince Chappelle on drums. He played with Koko Taylor for a while and Jr Wells.
