I believe that this tune went way up near the top of the charts the year it was out. The great thing about the 90's is the variety of popular hits. I feel like since the early 2000's, there's a sameness to today's hits, but perhaps I'm missing something. The 80's and 90's were very eclectic. There are great tunes in every decade, but I think the music video era really upped the diversity of genres. There is no way a song like this would become a hit nowadays. It's a bit strange and not easy to digest.

I thought this was way ahead of it’s time. It has a kind of trip-hop vibe, before that was a thing. It may be the first popular trip-hop song. This is actually a remix. The original version by this band is just a rock song. Major improvement though. The sample is from De La Soul - “Breakadawn” I love this song.
According to the singer the song is about growing up in a small town. If you are an artist living nowhere and you can’t get out it feels like dying.

Oh man.....loved this when it came out. Trip Hop is beyond great music. So peaceful to listen to...yet it gives you a subtle groove. And here are the lyrics.
    Take me down
    6 underground
    The ground beneath your feet
    Laid out low
    Nothing to go
    Nowhere a way to meet
I've got a head full of drought
    Down here
So far off of losing out
    Round here
    Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace
    Calm me down
    Bring it round
Too way high off your street
    I can see
    Like nothing else
    In me
    You're better than I wannabe
    Don't think 'cos I understand
    I care,
    Don't think 'cos I'm talking
    We're friends
    Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace
    Talk me down
    Safe and sound,
    Too strung up to sleep
    Wear me out
    Scream and shout
    Swear my time's never cheap
I fake my life like I've lived
    Too much,
I take whatever you're given, not enough
    Overground, watch this
    Space, I'm open
I fake my life like I've lived
    Too much,
I take whatever you're given, not enough
    Overground, watch this
    Space, I'm open
    To falling
    From grace.

This is definitely the 90's but there was a little genre called Trip-Hop that's what this song's genre would be considered.
If you're six feet underground, you're probably dead, as per the expression "six feet under."
"It's about death in a small town environment," Chris Corner of Sneaker Pimps said in his Songfacts interview. "You grow up in this shit town and you yearn to get out. A lot of artists, we just can't survive in a place like that. So, the essence of that song is that living in a small town is like dying. For us it was a huge release to get out and to explore the world. To see what everything else is about. We all wanted that. You know, the northern industrial shithole. And that's really what that song's about."
The small town where Corner grew up is Middlesbrough, England, whose famous sons include Chris Rea and Paul Rodgers.
There is a sense of detachment in this song, especially in the line, "I'm open to falling from grace." This reflects the pushback Chris Corner got from his family and friends when he left to pursue music, and how he felt about return visits to his hometown. "When you go back to your family, or you go back to your friends and you visit those places, which I try to do very infrequently, it instantly suffocates you," he said. "People do feel like you've made a mistake. You left them."
