  • Hi Guys! in this video I am reviewing the Mungyo Gallery soft pastel in both the 30 piece and the 60 piece set. For the Ocean wave painting i only used soft pastels found in the 30 piece set. I was working on grey pastel mat paper in a homemade sketchbook.

    Such a thorough and helpful review of these pastels. I particularly enjoyed watching you "grate" the pastels using your scissors for your whitest wave highlights and then using copier paper (I'm presuming-?) to push them into the pastels beneath them. Going to have to steal that technique! ;-) Thanks for sharing your time, talent and expertise! Blessings for a wonderful holiday season.

    I’m a watercolor artist who, admittedly, has never touched a single pastel in my life. But I really enjoyed this video a lot, it was really informative and I always love seeing windows into other mediums and the people who use them! Also it’s kind of funny to see that the same brands that make excellent watercolors, surprise, make excellent pastels lol. I see people mentioning sennelier, schmincke, etc, and that’s pretty cool! I have a soft spot for Mungyo watercolors (also sold as Prima Watercolors/Art Philosophy) so maybe if I dive into the world of pastels I’ll give these a try.

      Thank you. I started off as a watercolor artist who one day found my old high school set of pastels and started playing with them on a whim. I got addicted to them very quickly. 😃 i always love seeing how other mediums work because it always inspires me to experiment and push the boundaries of my normal mediums.

    You gave us a wonderful review of these pastels! It is easy to see how accomplished you are with this medium. I agree that if you are a beginner these are one of the best introductions to soft handmade pastels! Mungyo can be confusing as they have several lines of soft pastels, the real key is staying with “handmade” series or sets. I have seen the whole line of 200 on sale at Jerry’s for around $400.00! That is awful good for this quality of stick! I got the 30 stick set when trying to decide on what brand I wanted to spend my money on when going to soft pastels. I found the Schmincke sticks the best for my soft pastel needs. They are a bit tough to break clean, but oh so lovely to use! Thank you for sharing your insights with these pastels. You have also created a wonderful painting for us to enjoy, thank you!

      mjpete27 , I am late to his party. Here is a tip I picked up in my travels: try using a cigar cutter for your Schmincke or any pastel stick that will fit. Works even with TLs )i.e. the non-round type).

    Lauren, have you seen these on Amz recently? I bought the set of 30 last year on a great sale on Amz. If I search my orders and click the link again, I am getting Honsell Gallery soft pastels. The set of 30 looks the same, but They don’t have a set of 60 like yours. I definitely like that more natural 30 colors that came in your set of 60. EDIT....ok, I see them on Jerry’s, still under the Mungyo brand. Interesting. The set of 60 is on sale today for $99.

      I am glad you found them and on sale. I bought the set of sixty on Amazon two weeks ago. I just had to type in the set information specifically. I think mungyo also rembranded a few years ago because some of the mungyo gallery sets on there are a different shape of pastel (they are longer and thinner) and have different colors in the sets.

    Am I crazy, or do many pastel sets tend to be light on the blues? My Paul Reubens set of 72 only has 5 blues, and so do both sets here (at least this one has a Prussian!) I noticed the Terry Ludwig Plein Air 60 only has about 5 as well. Maybe it's just me -- but for a set of 60 that is half earths & neutrals, I'd think they would give you a few more options for sky and water? Or throw in a few more blues in the larger set? I feel like I'm missing something...

    • @LaurenWatkinsArt
      @LaurenWatkinsArt  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think your right (I come from watercolor as well) I ended up buying a few sets dedicated to blues for that reason.

    Have to say, I'm surprised you gave these non-artist quality cheap pastels that aren't lightfast a better review than Jack Richeson, which ARE artist quality, lightfast pastels. 😳😳

    FWIW: Made in Korea. Kaolin Clay and/or Calcium Carbonate. I would respectfully disagree with the Mungyo at a parr with Senelier. Mungyo are more on a parr with Rembrandt IMHO on quality?

    • @LaurenWatkinsArt
      @LaurenWatkinsArt  Před 2 lety +1

      I believe was referring to texture. They are not nearly as hard as Rembrandt and have a texture more similar to unison and Senelier. They also have a more consistent texture between colors. Personally, I find myself using these pastels more than my more expensive brands like senelier, Rembrandt, and Schminke. I agree they probably don’t have as nice of pigments as Schminke and Senelier.
