The Animals were founded in the north east of England in the 1960's. While they were on tour in the U.S. their bass player, Chad Chandler, "discovered" Jimi Hendrix in New York. He brought Jimi to London, put two great British musician with him, became Jimi's manager and so The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born!

The bass player here is Chas Chandler, who was in a cafe in NY in 1966 about two years or so after this video was made, and heard a young guitarist named Jimmy James playing there. Chas was blown away and brought Jimmy to the UK. Jimmy James would later change his name to Jimi Hendrix and the rest is Rock history.

One story is they got the name after a hostile review of one of their concerts -- the horrified reviewer from an older generation said "they're animals" and they were like "yeah -- we are. What are you gonna do about it?"
However Eric Burdon, the lead singer, says that's not actually true, that they named the band after a friend whose nickname was "Animal."

Really enjoyed watching you react to this song. To this day this one is still one of my mother's favorite songs and for all the times I heard it growing up I still love it myself.

I love how many people on CZcams have been discovering this fantastic old song, recently. The band was huge back in the 60s. Eric Burdon has a voice like no one else, and Alan Price is an absolute beast on the keyboard (though sadly he was a beast to his bandmates, also, and it kind of killed the band).

@@Omololacara Yeah, it's sad what happened to this band over the years. Chas Chandler, the bassist, died of a heart attack at a fairly young age. Alan Price, the exceedingly talented keyboard player, screwed the rest of the band over on royalties and none of them speak to him any longer. John Steele, the drummer, had a fallout with Eric Burdon, the lead singer, over use of the band's name and they haven't spoken in many, many years. Only Eric and the lead guitarist, Hilton Valentine, are still on friendly terms. Total bummer, because these five created some fantastic music together.
