  • I thought I'd go see if I could find my ancestor in this very historic cemetery. It gets dark while I'm in the cemetery but I'm not scared so you shouldn't be either :)
I found something that I'm very interested in participating in - headstone documentation project for Pennsylvania. This is the record on file for this exact cemetery, the ones related to me have not been submitted, so, I plan to submit -- usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/...

What a lovely cemetery! Makes me think of the lovely Spring Grove cemetery in Cincinnati. I hope I get to have a picnic in this one some day when it's warmer.

Oh my yes, that would be wonderful! It is a popular place for steampunk gatherings. The one thing it is sadly lacking is public bathrooms... I don't know if they did offer access to one of the larger buildings in the hay day, but in modern times that lack is a bit of a deterrent to longer visits. Coincidentally that entrance on the cover art is right across the street from where we've gone for the diner the last couple times you were in town! I am hoping I can eventually find Margaret Barker, too... at least I know her details of where she's buried now :)

Wow, if local tour guide is ever a feasible livelihood... And bladdernut--I have never in my life encountered it and had to go look it up! Now I won't be satisfied until I lay eyes on it, haha! Found a great detailed map indicating that in my neck of the woods it's only found in southern NH along the Connecticut River/western border, which is not immediately out the back door.

@@wildedibles819 I see my mom very rarely and I have to admit I left that conversation more confused than not. Well.... trying to remember... it might be that she's not sure if we're related to this Margaret Barker or not, and then there's a Margaret Austin in the mausoleum that she knows we are related to or something like that. The conversation kept jumping around and I got so lost I am really not sure! All of Mom's grandmothers and great grandmothers were named Margaret... she grew up thinking that being a grandmother just meant your name had to be changed to Margaret LOL... the conversations are easy to get lost in because of that difficult overlap of all the first names.

I got lost tracing history too
My mom's dad we can trace his history back easily with the vanduzen family name my hubby we can trace back too being VanBlaricum
Van back in 1300-1400s meant born in
Blaricum is still a place well the family name didn't change
Vanduzen has changed from van durren
      It's interesting looking back sometimes

@@wildedibles819 Oh that is very very cool! We have this one name "Sourwine" that we can trace back pretty far but not that far! Sourwine was originally Sauerwein, which means vinegar maker. Jacob Sauerwein got on a bot from Anheim in 1692 coming to the US, but the thing is.... there were 3 different Anheim's in germany at the time, and the ship manifest doesn't say which one LOL. So the trail on that one gets lost a bit. On the other side there's a William Findley (senator and house member later on, yeah, that one) we do have his. He's from Dutil Ireland and immigrated in 1756 to the US. By 1780s he's in Pittsburgh, mediating the wiskey rebellion. That's my dad's mom's family. I get more confused by the family lines that I don't know stories for. I learn best from good stories :) and the only good story about all the Margarets is that I know they were all Margarets. Margaret Austin I found her burned down house by recognizing a cultivated garden amist neck-high grasses on a bank, that I did get a name attached to so that was nice to clarify. There are some FUN stories :) I like that part.
