You are welcome after dipping the stick in water and then rolling it in sugar you need to make sure it is completely dry. Also allow your sugar liquid to cool longer if it is still too hot when you dip the stick in, it will melt the sugar right off the stick.@@kiareeo0001
Btw have at least 1 cup of water since the first time you pour water and sugar you should have the same amount, then later add more sugar once the previous one dissolves. It will make it more dense then later on your third cup the sugar shouldn’t fully dissolve. Edit: You don’t have to wait 30 mins for it to cool, as you prepare the next step it will cool! Your welcome :)
Thank you so much This was our homework assignment of making crystals and this video helped a lot now I can make this for my project I’m happy I have 2 weeks for it
Most likely the liquid was too hot and it melted the seed crystals on the stick. Let the sugar liquid cool down a little more before putting the sugar stick in it. And since it is a food science it doesn't always turn out every time, think of it as more of an experiment and not an exact recipe that works every time.
lol wow. Next time, dilute the syrup with more water and then put it in a blender with some fresh fruit like strawberries and make a yummy drink, or you can make lemonade with it, just add more water to the syrup.
I followed the same steps and gave enough time to it but my mixture is not clear .I don't know if it will work out it is my summer vacation task. Can u tell me will it work out?
@@muhammadsaddique5635 It's hard to say it is not an exact food science. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If you sugar mixture isn't clear it may mean the sugar isn't completely dissolved.
You can BUT you need to reheat it and add another cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew, since the solution is no longer as concentrated. You can only do two in the same container if the container is really wide, otherwise they will grow stuck together. If that makes sense?
You can use the sugar water for drinks or make more rock candy, but in order to make more rock candy you have to reheat it and add an additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew on the stick.
Nope haha. Portion control. It's not like you eat this everyday! Eating candy like this once in awhile isn't going to give you diabetes. Besides that sugar doesn't cause diabetes although it can certainly play a factor in getting it. But there is much more to it than that. Overall diet, weight, activity level etc.
i tried it today and the sugar from the sticks dissolved into the mixture. what happened? i let the mixture cool down overnight and i also let the sugar stick to the sticks overnight. as sticks i used chopsticks. is that a problem?
OR you use pest control and never have to worry about ants. :) OR your house is cleaned regularly so there is not reason for aunts to come in to begin with. PRO TIP: If you don't have pest control keep the floors clean all the time, and you won't have an aunt problem. Either way these have to be left out overnight for 5 to 7 days for the rock candy to actually grow.
You could always try it. It's possible that could work, but I have never tried reseeding an already-made one to see if it would grow larger. A fun experiment for sure.@@avancarr8690
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I was thinking of making something interesting with soda syrup. I was going to boil down the soda to extract the syrup and mix it back into a sugar/water mixture at different ratios and see if I can get soda flavored rock candy. Worse thing that happens is it ends up not working and I'm out a few bucks.

lol. Although that is a myth, sugar doesn't cause diabetes. There is way more that goes into getting diabetes. I eat lots of sugar and do not have diabetes. It certainly can contribute to it, but isn't the cause. Eating something like this once in awhile will not give you diabetes. Just saying :)

That takes all the fun out of it, haha. But yes definitely much faster to just buy it. However this is really fun to make and see the food science in action.
how to make rock candy
step 1: get a real rock
step 2: coat it with sugar
step 3: eat it

I followed the exact same steps
The mixture was clear when it was boiling but after some time the mixture turned hard and cloudy.😢
You probably boiled it too long. All you need to do is bring it to a boil then turn the heat off and let it cool for a bit.

Can I put it inside the refrigerator? In case it'll get stale
No, there is too much moisture/humidity in the fridge. It will ruin it.
Is the food coloring necessary?
No it is not necessary.
Can you use what is left to make more after the first one? Or can you do 2 at a time?
You can BUT you need to reheat it and add another cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew, since the solution is no longer as concentrated. You can only do two in the same container if the container is really wide, otherwise they will grow stuck together. If that makes sense?
Will a plastic straw work?
You could try it! It may or may not work, I haven't tried a straw.
Can i store in the fridge instead of leaving it out while waiting?
No it needs to be at room temperature
Do i have to put food coloring?
No you can leave it out.
After your rock candy is ready is the sugar water reusable?
You can use the sugar water for drinks or make more rock candy, but in order to make more rock candy you have to reheat it and add an additional cup of sugar to make up for the sugar that grew on the stick.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt okay!
For how many days we can keep it and were
If it is dry it will last many days. If it is humid where you live it might effect the shelf life.
Can I substitute the hard candy flavoring for a extract
Yes you can use any hard candy flavoring.

i tried it today and the sugar from the sticks dissolved into the mixture. what happened? i let the mixture cool down overnight and i also let the sugar stick to the sticks overnight. as sticks i used chopsticks. is that a problem?
The chopsticks should be fine. Just keep them in the mixture and the rock crystals may still grow on it.

Can you let it sit for longer to make bigger crystals
Not much longer, but in general the longer it sits the larger the crystals, but they will only get so big no matter how long it sits.
