  • Christopher F Foss, Jane's Land Warfare Correspondent talks about South Africa's Paramount Group's latest Mbombe 8 in the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) configuration. The vehicle being shown at the show is fitted with a locally developed one-person turret armed with a Russia 2A42 dual-feed cannon and 7.62mm co-axial machine gun, which are laid onto the target by the gunner using a flat-panel display with twin control handles.

    Its a pity it didnt come out with a Russian turret with twin 30 mm high velocity guns which are also radar guided and two twin ATGM rocket launchers and side mounted auto grenade launchers. Maybe it will also be perfect with the Israely built Trophy self protection system.

    With that RCWS + 2 x ATGM it role will change from APC to IFV.

      The Barys 8x8 was developed by Paramount (same company) in combination with Kazakh engineers. Heavily based on this vehicle.

    What's the difference between the Barys 8x8 and the Mbombe?

      Very similar vehicle. Same company helped design and build them. obviously the Barys has 8 wheels instead of 6, but much of the systems are the same.

    did this compete against the Badger and lost?

    • @ANWRocketMan
      @ANWRocketMan Před 3 lety +3

      No. The Mbombe 8x8 and 6x6 were developed after the contract for the badger was awarded. Now with Denel struggling to complete the design work on Badger, the army and government might soon consider a fully local vehicle (hopefully). I really don't understand why they didn't opt for a more home-grown design and industry (we have the capability). A lot of the badger is still developed here, it's highly modified from the Patria AMV.

      No it did not,( Badger circa 2007 -Mbombe 8 circa 2017)if it did it would lose as a design feature is its height which means it is a metre shorter than the Patria / Badger while retaining many of the specs of the Badger , range, slightly faster, better protected( standard variant), Weaponry and payload similar with Mbombe 8 having the advantage with a 9 tonne payload. So well done SANDF.

      @@ANWRocketMan Its got nothing to do with design work.Most equipment in the SANDF is of South African designed or manufactured! Only the Badger stands as being from Finland. Along with any aircraft.

      Flat sides aren't the issue, it's the v-shaped bottom.
