INSANE FORD SCRAP YARD HAUL!

- While on our way to Runnymede Pleasure Gardens for the Petrol Heads Classic and Modern Car Meet we stopped off at Cobham Services. After getting some McDonalds for breakfast we left for the M25. Just before taking the turning onto the motorway we spotted this incredible sight. Ford Granada's, Ford Capris, Ford Escorts, Minis, Mini Coopers, Jeep, and more. This amazing haul had come from a scrap yard out in Portugal and was on its way to Birmingham. Who knows what fate awaits these cars, hopefully they will all go on to be restored to their former glory!

The most expensive one on there and the rarest was the mk3 escort rs1600i .... yes I'm from England 🇬🇧... the rs1600i rev'd 1000rpm higher than the standard 1s 😊
Crazy when you think about it the cars that you have on there in the 90s were sold for maybe three, four, five hundred pounds and now they're worth thousands upon thousands. My sister used to own a Mark 2 fiesta and my dad bought it for 200 pounds and sold it for 300 pounds but now it's probably worth about 5 to 6 thousand pounds

@@NC750X It's ridiculous if you think about it, you didn't used to be able to give them away. The amount that have been raced as well. I suppose them being raced though has added to the rarity and hence price increase among other factors
@@MaxWolfMedia yeah I don't know them that well myself I just remember my family buying them for next to nothing and scrapping or selling them they were next to worthless. Oh how times have changed and In my opinion not for the better especially for the world. American European Japanese all are going the wrong way bring back the cars that had soul and personality!!!
Many people are learning that restoring these cars is worthwhile if done properly. Ford cars and Minis are really bringing big money once restored properly and all the panels are available. This is good to see, because I think the UK sources have about dried up or are crazy expensive. So far I have had four cars restored, one was a California MG that was shipped back to UK. UK cars almost and sometimes do need a full body replacement.
Yeah, most cars that have rotted here in the UK usually end off very badly. Not really the ideal country for classic cars but at least the restoring scene seems to be coming on strong.
Unfortunately for the granadas it's not possible to buy all the panels to restore one , interior and exterior trim is also very difficult to source , there is not a big enough market for specific models to make money on replacements

@@peterhynds7231 finding the spares has become quite a task now as you said, a lot of money in the old fords so I wouldn't be surprised if more makes and models start getting resto kits made
It's not really easy to get the Ford panels anymore.
Portugal was (and apparently still is) a great source of MK1 and MK2 Escorts. The UK has been buying them all for a long time, for parts. That's what most of these are going to be, It's a shame, but it's what it is. Same thing happened with the Toyota AE86. We had thousands of those and they're all being exported. Like that saying goes: "Someone's trash is someone else's treasure"

A 2 door escort mk2 estate there. My grandfather had one just like that, in a garish 70s orange.....but i loved going for a rides in it when i was very young. Haven't seen one of those since the early 1990s! But my favourite of that lot, is the adorable mk1 on the first truck. Doesn't look too bad body-wise neither. I hope they get the TLC they deserve.

It's crazy to think they scrap cars this good in Portugal. It's a Mk2 van for me, if I can find one.
I would love to see the place that these came from. Presumably they would have taken the best ones but really goes to show what's hidden away out there. Such a shame that pretty much all of the scrap yards here in the UK are more or less gone now. Hope they all go on to be restored, would be very interesting to know the fate of these.
These are really considered to far gone.
It's extremely expensive to do any kind of bodywork here.
I restored my 309 Graffic but made sure it was quite a solid one, body wise, but even then ended up spending 700€ just for a few minor repairs to the paintwork (full paintjob probably 4 times that or more).

@@vitorpassos309 body work costs a fortune, especially if you want it done right. Once you get into a car there's no telling how far you'll have to go. With the price some of these cars are now fetching thought it's starting to become worth doing.

FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser on there. Wow! Drove about in one of those when i worked in the Pilbara 1994. It was old then! Stunning car.

😂 Yes it's not somewhere I ever imagined cars rotting away in. The UK is just as bad for it. We couldn't do a video here pulling a car out of a field after 30 years and seeing if it drove like out in the states, if you did it here there would be nothing left
@@MaxWolfMedia Pete C on CZcams did an epic restoration of a Mk3 Cortina GXL 2-door automatic that had been sat in a field for 30 years. Almost every single part of the bodyshell needed to be repaired or replaced. However, it did run and drive, before restoration it was driven off a trailer and into the Birmingham NEC for a "before and after" display.

Amazed the Escort at 0:49 survived any turns the truck made as it would take a blind man squinting through one eye to see that as a turning gap. They've obviously trimmed every last millimetre out of the loads to beat the height limit over the water but there's a time when it goes wrong and when it does it's neither pretty or quick to sort out.

There are many older cars in Portugal, most are usually rust free,
I know of an old showroom, couple old fords, old Merc, old Citroen, all look perfect except for dust, nothing has changed or moved there in 3 year's I have seen it

The black Escort looks really good. The Minis look like they have been abandoned 25 years ago and paint is the only thing holding them from falling apart. Rustproofing back in those days was not a priority.

I also thought they looked like the Old NL car reg format, Portugal used two sets of Numbers and one of letter's as did the Netherlands ,up until 1992, So that shows the ages of the cars.

As a Portuguese seeing this video makes me sad really.
Knowing that Portugal has been exporting hundreds of such cars every year to UK , Germany and Africa for the last decades and also knowing that it is virtually impossible to import any older car back in to the country again, the classic market is getting thinner by the day.
Finding parts in scrap yards became impossible also as all the classics/youngtimers have been exported and only new cars remain to be broken.
All cars i remember as a boy in the 70s and 80s.

They are all old style portuguese plates apart from the granada on the rear of the second trailer that looks like a German plate. This must of been a private collection sold in bulk because cars are a lot more expensive in Portugal and some of these like the minis, the xr2 and the fully restored Toyota are still worth a fortune even in Portugal.
It looked like the collection on the first trailer was in better shape than the beauties on the second trailer.

Oh wow, thanks for letting me know. Been very busy this week so haven’t had time to investigate where they might have gone. I’ll keep and eye on their page and see if they reveal what the final fate to some of these cars are 😎

Something I have looked in doing but the duty to buy them is high hence why in Portugal the cars are just left in fields etc and not restored. There is no classic cars in Portugal either new or worn out

@@MaxWolfMedia About 5 Months ago I bought a 1991 Seat Ibiza with the Cronos Package from the fellow who imported it from Portugal.Funny little car. Zero rust 2 Members of the same family owned from new. Had to have it 🤪. It's a keeper.

@@StevensPaul Wow! A few years ago I had a 1989 Ibiza Special with the 903cc engine. It was getting quite rusty though, with the UK weather and salted winter roads. One of the most fun-to-drive cars I've ever owned though.

Yeah shop restos are not cheap in any sense of the word. Once you get into body work the money just starts racking up
Those minis are worth a lot of money and all parts are readily available
Especially if they are genuine Coopers, I don't know minis enough to tell the difference but hope they get restored either way 😎
@@MaxWolfMedia there was a cooper on the TV series Bangers& Cash a 1965 total rust bucket .it went through the auction for about 12K .the ones on the transporter are standard minis ,coopers have a fuel filler cap either side of the back wings
