We started with three years of classical conversations and then switched to Charlotte Mason. I always felt like I was falling short (perfectionism). Fortunately, in 2020 I started to relax and see education as growing in virtue and wisdom rather than workforce preparation. Thank you for sharing with us and being such a positive influence in my homeschool journey!

Homeschooling helps us jump off of the hamster wheel, doesn't it?

I absolutely agree with your seasons approach to schooling. This will be my 8th year of homeschooling and I can confidently say a mix allows me to have stamina and transform education into joy vs drudgery. I am the driver and go where my family needs, and where I need to go.
At first the variety & possiblies feel exciting. Then they can switch to overwhelm. But knowing there is natural fluidity can calm a noisy mind.
When your children are very young, your seasons look different and they should. As they grow, discipline is added in, but we can never forget that life needs to be lived so our children can brute in the way the Lord is leading them; so that you can grow together as a family, and so that you can have rest as a mother. Teaching while in rest is so vital to model grace & rational thinking to our children.
I definitely notice that weather is a very natural guide to the percentage of seated work we do. We are naturally in a mode seek home life when it's very cold or very hot. Another guide are religious holidays & seasons. How blessed we are as homeschoolers to not have to ignore or exclude these things from our lesson planning.
How blessed we are to be able to set aside philosophies and structure and one year have a 'traditional' looking year and then the next shaped around a family trip, historical/ scientific event. This blesses our children in the fact that we never stop learning. We never stop growing. And that anything is possible if they have a true desire to grow.

You said "without teachers college or even a degree you have everything you need."
I definitely support your statement. 1st if we trust in Jesus Christ he has given us everything we need for life and godliness.
2nd if we are observant of our kids as parents and grandparents we already know our kids best (not in a prideful way but because God gave us those insights when he designed parents)... And we know the one who knows our kids better than anyone in this world.
3rd I have a teaching degree and it holds me back from breaking out of the box so often. And it causes me to have that internal battle and self sabotage of second guessing what I know deep down about what is best for my kids. So if you don't have years of higher education you are starting off on a better footing for deprogramming yourself.
I am so thankful for your insights and encouragement for this homeschooling journey. Thank you for sharing with us all you have learned along your journey. God bless you.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was being groomed for an Ivy League education, so the brainwashing was pretty deep with me, too 😜.

Another great video! It's nice that you mentioned that Charlotte Mason wasn't a homeschooler; it's something I noticed before & it's good to hear it from someone else. And if I may add, although I have high respect for her and her educational philosophy that takes emphasis on God & His creations, at the end of the day she wasn't a mom. Character training, learning etc... outside of school hours contribute to the wholistic growth of a child. Point being is, there are so many things that teachers miss out seeing in their students once school hours ended. But having said that, CM clearly has done a great job in forming her educational philosophy. I was quite surprised when I initially found out she wasn't a mom.

My copy of Homeschool Sanity is coming this week!😊 looking forward to it! I finished Glorious Mothering in a day, I don't have a large family but there's much to learn from it. I agree with what you said in this video, take the best of CM method and use it. The longer I homeschool the more I get to know how each of my children operate in terms of learning and I have to say they are a mixture of different methods. Blessings!

Wow, it's so refreshing to hear your encouraging words. Homeschooling has taken such a turn in recently years and I'm feeling just so bogged down.
My son is autistic and 19 years old. It's so discouraging because i need to graduate him but he's so extremely resistant to any schooling. I am dealing with what is likely an auto immune disorder so i have little energy, get sick often and have chronic pain. My husband moved us outside the city and the commute nearly every day is zapping all the energy i had.
My youngest is autistic and has a slight vision impairment with a high chance of losing her vision in her late teens/ early 20s so she currently goes to a dyslexia school in the city. I am beyond tired.
I was going to make my bigger kids do school today (Saturday) to make up for not doing much school workthis week. However, i got an idea to go to the nearest national park instead. Unfortunately my teens don't want to go but at least my 10nyear old does.
Thank you for being the voice of reason

I loved the story you told about the Shakespeare play. Many times the same thing happens at my house, I have some wonderful things and books prepared, but we don't get to them. Later my children discover those things and enjoy them on their own. I remember in a older video you talked about not worrying about coverings everything and reading everything--- those things we don't get to are left for our children to discover in adulthood. I love that. And it is very true.

This is great Sherry and gets me excited for the coming school year! My plan is to have a heavier focus on math, reading and history Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Thursdays is for a community Bible study (kids have their own classes!) and science then Friday is for cleaning (life skills 😉) and “missionary tea time”.

I think it takes a number of us some time to learn. I am always amazed at some young mothers who seem to start out with this understanding--a definite work of God!

@MomDelights I think some also have that natural ability to teach and understand the purpose and principles behind it. I went to public school all my life, so the transition has been a challenging one. Definitely a work of God in their hearts to start out with such wisdom and understanding!
