  • NASA's Super Guppy arrives in Alabama on Nov. 6, 2023, carrying the heat shield that protected Orion’s crew module during its flight on Artemis I. The one-of-a-kind, turboprop-powered aircraft ferried the heat shield from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Huntsville International Airport for transport to the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Technicians at Marshall will use the center’s specialized milling tool to remove the heat shield’s outer layer of ablative material, a protective coating called Avcoat, as part of routine post-flight analysis.

As an aviation enthusiast of 70+ years, I read the article in Flying's e-newsletter titled "Watch the Super Guppy Land" and was super excited to chase the link. I KEENLY wanted to see it landing and not immediately cut-away after it porpoises the first time! Taking off, flying and especially landing this behemoth have GOT to be "special!!!" FLY NAVY!!!

Seeing one in the air just flying by leaves one doubting their own sanity.

This particular bad boy is about 50 years old. It’s the last super guppy still in service.

It flies right over my neighborhood on final into Huntsville. Always freaky to see.

He 3-pointed it then it hopped on the mains. Probably not the landing they wanted shown on YT, LOL.

2:22 the wing doesn't go through the fuselage. Interesting how they made that.

Surprised they’re not using a newer design. Nice to see that it’s still flying, though!

1:25 Navigator asks pilot "are we doing a sharp left while the rest of us remains on track?" :-)

As a pilot, a waste of fuel after landing .Should have shut down two engines.

A bigger question REMAINS. How are you people at NASA not outraged by this planets situation? How are you not greatly upset and pounding on the cop shop to shut this horrible idea of a system down. You know that everyone is factually stuck on this planet, on the top layer to be exact with no way to leave due to no direct ground underneath us nor any oxygen outside our ozone layer. How are you not outraged since it's all a waste? Not only do we never go anywhere our entire aging process, not even planet hopping but all that happened on this planet was every single generation ending up at the cemetery to not keep a thing. It makes no sense.
