These Congress Hearings are very important, but god I wish that these hearings were done by industry experts with knowledge and experience about the workings of such technology.
Hearing people with very little knowledge about the subject matter asking whether TikTok access wifi is painful and ultimately a waste of such a rare opportunity.

Problem isn't lack of industry experts, they just have nothing valid to criticize so they're reaching for the dumbest things to attack tiktok over, like asking it if connects to wifi... They're not particularly doing anything worse than any other app so there's nothing they can really get nailed for to justify the ban. They're trying to rely on the ignorant public and fearmongering to scare everyone into agreeing to the ban, wouldn't want the app accessing and stealing all your wifis after all... 😱

i completely agree that wanting to ban tiktok is ridiculous and that there are definitely more important issues to tackle in the US. However, the uyghur genocide in China and the role of tiktok in this whole thing shouldn't be underestimated. For example I've noticed that tiktoks shedding light on the topic or criticizing the oppression of uyghurs are taken down. So its good that certain questions are asked (even if they are not answered) and we should be mindful of the power social media apps hold and their influence on us...

However, and I'm simply basing my understanding of the hearing on this video as the edits don't seem to take away from the main context :
As Mr. Chew was trying to state, he was asked to provide information on how TikTok works, the specifics and technicalities of data privacy, and related information.
They "went" (and once again I'm generalizing) from the genocide of the Ughyer population to "does TikTok access my WiFi?".
The seriousness of the conversation was all over the place (with or without editing) and I really don't believe it's in any way beneficial to highlighting the horror of a genocide.
I agree after how China treats their people we draw the line with an app but the other stuff is ok...lead imported in products from China...ok...let's still bring in their cheap crap that doesn't follow the most basic of standards with quality
