- Perserverance: Castaway Chronicles is a multi-part board game series linked together by a campaign mode. In the game, survivors of a shipwreck must work together to protect their new settlement from waves of dinosaur attacks, both in building a new civilization in Episode I, and in exploring their island to learn its secrets in Episode II.
Jeremy and Ryan break down their pros and cons of each game and address what Persererance brings to the table as a whole package.

Fantastic review. I hope to get my own copy at some point! Maybe I'll just wait for episodes 3 and 4
From my understanding Ep1 is the intro game and Ep2 ramps up ( as you stated ) then Ep3 and Ep4 will ramp up even more to get you to that end game. I know I can break out Ep1 with some medium weight gamers and they enjoy it. Now I have a footing to get them up to Ep2 and hopefully to Ep3 and 4. Excited to see where they go with it.
Even though I love Anachrony so much, I know I can't break it out with Fractures of Time to people new to Anachrony. Even heavier players brains will melt on first play with Fractures. But getting to that point is so much fun.

Personally I like how combat works. The dice are only used for the passive parts of combat, traps and walls and that makes thematic sense for me. They might not always work, but in the end you can simply score by placing them due to the chief engineer and end game scoring.
The game is all about immeadiate rewards vs long term points.
I have this in my closet for a while - unplayed! We were planning on playing it (Ep. 1) next Saturday for the first time. Although… after this review I am thinking about choosing another game for Saturday (I have the Anachrony big box as well - also still unplayed). And it looks like you would choose Anachrony over this one any day of the week. Should I play just base Anachrony for my 1st time or should I include any expansions? I am used to playing Vital Lacerda games just so you know 😉
This is a game that reveals more as you play it more, both episodes. I think people aren't playing it enough to really peel back all the layers as it's not very apparent after even 5 or 6 plays.
I don't agree. I played this enough solo and competitive to really feel both designs, admittedly part two less than one. The first one is just not my speed. It's ok
@@jhowd78 interesting point, I have played mostly solo but have over 20 plays of each episode in. I really think it has more to it than you all discussed in the video, but not every game is a 10 for everyone and that's what makes this hobby awesome. We each find the things we enjoy (or don't). ❤️

I disagree. It really have any deeper layers. Lots of noise but not much gameplay to warrant it

J. How and Ryan two titans. No seriously, I saw Ryan at Gen Con just before the pandemic, and he towered above me. Ryan should challenge J.How to a game of 🏀basketball since both are so tall. Lol. Great review. I wonder what Episode 3 & 4 will be about (i.e. what mechanisms). I have seen some mixed reviews about Perseverance. Glad to see MvM’s perspective. I think there was a 2 year flood of Dinosaur themed games. I think we are currently in a “Pirate” theme wave of games. 😁
Really interesting thoughts on this one. Perseverance has been on my maybe list for awhile, but I think a lot of the points youve mentioned here have moved it to my probably not list. Its such a big financial investment and there's so many other games out there Im yet to try for a fraction of the price (Ark Nova Im looking at you!!)

If you have majority in a couple areas sometimes you will not need the votes to keep first or second place, and in that case the resources are great. Votes don't translate directly into points.
I made the mistake of saying votes translate to points and I make this mistake saying this darn near every time I first explain the game. Good catch
Totally agree. Just played this first time yesterday and my opponent beat me heavily in the voting, but I played the influence game and made sure I'd score on a couple of the chiefs and pulled out an end game win because of them.
This game is a beast! But the disconnect between the amazing theme and the procedural mechanics is huge. I would wish for some more streamlining and simply REMOVE some concepts. Resolving combat in E1 is a slog.

Lots of what you say I agree with... but, no way is episode 1 only a 5 or a 6 out of 10, its easily an 8.
Whilst the episodes are linked, they are also separate games, and for that reason it's an 8 for me.
For me, the solo mode, which isn't as good as Anachronys', is still a very good solo mode, and is far better than a lot of solo modes in other games.
I'm still to play episode 2...
Everyone has a different metric. For me an 8 is a go-to game that I’m always tying to get to the table. Episode 2 is the one I’m always wanting to play out of the box.
