  • Perseverance - Broken Meeple Mega Review - Does An Episodic Game System Work?
    Perseverance: Castaway Chronicles introduces the first two episodes in a series of euro-style dice-drafting / dice-placement strategy games. The saga will ultimately consist of four episodes, telling the story of a group of survivors becoming a mighty civilization on a hostile island. As each episode features unique characteristics and a different game feel, they are playable as standalone medium/heavy games but also as a continuous campaign. The theme and story unfolds through evolving game mechanisms across the episodes, also making the rules easier to learn. In the campaign mode, the outcome of each episode influences the next, but the game has no legacy elements and no hidden rules; the whole storyline is infinitely replayable.

    Usually I tend to agree with your reviews, but I couldn't disagree more on this one. Perseverance is a great game. We really enjoy it. I play with my 14 year old daughter and warned her that this game might be a bit complex when we were learning it, but after our first plays of Episode 1 and 2, she remarked that it's not difficult to learn at all. We don't play particularly heavy games either.

      Kids smarter than most then, id call that an exception to the norm. Most adults I wouldn't put this near. Also how much of the game are you essentially running on their behalf, I. E are they simply choosing the die and stating their action and then you run through the fiddly parts.

    • @achang101
      @achang101 Před 2 lety +5

      @@TheBrokenMeeple No, my daughter takes her own actions and works out her own strategy. I’m too busy focusing on my own game to manage her game. I really don’t think the game is that difficult, there some fiddly rules, but otherwise the actions are pretty much explained in the board.
      The game does look intimidating though, I wasn’t intending to introduce her to the game, but she picked it off the shelf when I said to grab a game for us to play.

    Sorry Luke, I took Ep 1 to a game day for a 4player game, and it only took us about 2 1/2 hours with a full teach to 3 new players. They even commented on how the game was shorter than they expected. So I would disagree on the 3-4 hour thing ( at least for Ep1). With only 12+ turns in the game there is no reason you can't do this in about 2 hours. Unless you have some serious AP players. I would agree with Ep 2 however. I found Ep1 to be a good primmer for EP 2.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  Před 2 lety +4

      I did mention that Ep 1 is more streamlined with the time and is closer to 2.5-3 hours. But Ep 2, you would have not had that good fortune.

    Obviously i can't comment on episode 2 yet.
    And to be fair i am able to play long games fairly regularly so play length isn't really a factor for my groups.

    Another nice review. Over the past few years I’ve found that I just don’t have the time or the play group to really enjoy complex games. I had backed Etherfields and it was one of the fist games I’ve ever purged from my collection. I need my games to hit a sweet spot. With length of play, streamlined rules, and limited player down time. A resent Kickstarter, My Father’s Work is another example of a game I really want to love, but even playing the demo web version with all the “narrative” story is just a bit too much. My goal is to have a nice collection with a diverse selection. Mechanics, player counts, themes. But I find if it is so complicated to teach to new players, it just doesn’t seem to hit the table. Even when I play an older game that I need to brush up on the rules on, I inwardly cringe on some games and think if I really even want to expend all that mental energy before we even play. Games like Arnak are really moving up on my list simply for the streamlined rules and ease of play. Rune Stones is another example. Give me 3 options, make the decisions challenging don’t give me 15 different things I can choose from.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple

    superb game for us. Played episode 1, 4 x (in a 2, 3 & 4 player)and episode 2, 2 x.
    - We played episode 1 last sunday with 4 in 2,5h. I must say that everybody had played the game 1 times before.
    - The dissenters work great in a 2 player game, no extra rule book or rules from the solo rule book, so I think you didn't check out a 2 player game properly. No problem.
    - As I played a lot of Lacerda games, I do not agree with the On Mars comparison. On Mars is so much harder. Are the rules of Perseverance easy? Not at all, but totally doable and as so many games, after playing it once, it's ok. Will you forget rules after nog playing it for a while? Definetly. I can follow you in that one.
    --> The best part of Perseverance is the tension for area control in the City's. It's all about scoring the most votes. Such a good system, which keeps everyone engaged also if it's another players turn.

While I will play it several more times before deciding, I just don't see that it has potential to knock out Anachrony or Trickerion (or the Lacerda games for that matter). I liked episode 2 better than episode 1 but not enough to keep it (even if it were not attached to episode 1). Cerebria>Trickerion>Anachrony are still 3 of my favorite games and I am still excited for Transhumanity. • @konstantinosspiliopoulos4712

    Hi Luke.Thanks for the review.I have to disagree on 3 things though.
    1)The rules are actually pretty good.I am referring not to casual gamers,but to backers who have seen Paul's playthroughs a million times and know exactly what to wait from Mindclash.
    2)The temple card you draw is maybe the most rewarding thing in episode 2 as it gives you a direction.Getting 10-20 points from your temple adventure might give you the edge eventually.
    3)Sorry if i misunderstood your point but the 2-player mode does not include any solo mode mechanisms.You just put some other color cubes and settlements in setup and you have to compete with the dissenters' s presence in community areas and officers during assemblies.
    Overall a solid game for me that almost commited suicide during development because of its length as you mentioned.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  Před 2 lety

      Getting anywhere close to 20 points is VERY fortunate on the temple, plus the combinations of what's on those temple cards don't gel very well with the acquisition of votes or getting the most out of the officers.
      I never said the rulebook was bad, but it's a ton of rules, it's 3-4 rulebooks depending on what you're playing as. That's a lot of rules. Too many rules. With the dissenters, it's not as involved as in solo, but it's still an un-necessary part of the game. You have another side of the board, just tailor it for 2 players better.

    I’m very disappointed with your review. I’ve only played Ep 1 about 4 times at 2-3 players. Episode 1 was so much fun, and there are so many paths to victory. It’s all synergy with a strategy. Also the dissenters in a 2 player game add zero rules overhead to the game. It has you add some of their dice to the pool, put some settlements down and add influence cubes and that is it. They don’t take turns and all you have to do is add a few things to the board after an assembly. So not sure you are accurate on the 2 player mode. I’m super excited for Episode 2, both game play wise. I have heard it takes longer, but even when you have downtime on your turn you still have to stay engaged in the other players turns to figure out your moves. To me this game shines at 3 players.
    As for the chronicles mode, this is where i think this game comes together. It’s not about the story, but the arc you are building up your character and how that makes you play each episode different. It not a lot of rules over head either it’s pretty straight forward.
    Also for episode 1 after one assembly we didn’t need to looks at the book, the player aid helps you go through everything you need to play it and occasionally you might have to reference the rules but it was very very minimal for us in episode one.
    I got this game because you had it on your most anticipated games. To me the rules over head on this is less then trickerion. But that’s me, this was a really negative review for a absolutely amazing game. Episode 1 i would rate at 9. And I think ep 2 will hit the same.
    Also the deluxe version give metal markers, Dino minis, globerries, multiple designs for miniatures for the player pieces, and dual layer boards. It’s a $40 difference for all that and to me totally worth it.
    Again, just felt this was way more negative and had some inaccuracies in your review.

      Agree with Bryan on this one…I have only played Ep 1 and I think this is a great game…quality components, easy rules, smooth engaging gameplay and lots of strategic, crunchy decisions…a hit for me anyways…I have Trickerion and Anachrony which are both excellent but Perseverance is also great in my book…

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  Před 2 lety +3

      I love the way it's considered negative when it's given a 6/10 - that's still above average. Good doesn't mean 9/10 or bust.
      The dual layer boards aspect I didn't know, that is cool. Honestly though metal markers are un-necessary and yes you get multiple designs for miniatures, but at the end of the day, not everyone wants miniatures - just look at the KS page. To some $40 is a lot.
      You say inaccuracies. Firstly, opinions are subjective by their very nature - your opinion differs from mine, but that doesn't make yours or mine more or less accurate. Secondly, you're claiming that under your experience, you didn't need to refer to the book after one assembly. As much as I find that tricky to believe, that's not important, but maybe you found it easier. That's great, you've overcome a massive hurdle of the game. But I would bet money that you're one of the fortunate exceptions to the norm in that regard. This game is easily the most complicated game that Mindclash has put out. I'm actually playing Trickerion tomorrow. I've not played it in months. And I know I only need a rules refresher at most to get back into it, not a full rules teach.
      I don't know how you can say dissenters add no rules overhead. You literally have a full rulebook to use them. That's extra rules overhead. I do not understand how a full additional rulebook is not considered rules overhead. As for Chronicles, yes it's not a big rulebook compared to the others, BUT IT'S ANOTHER RULEBOOK! In solo mode, that's THREE RULEBOOKS. THREE. For 99% of players, that is too much hence I stand by that this is a niche game with a devoted fanbase.
      The game does shine best at 3 players - that I actually said. I don't want an AI to pilot in 2 players though and in 4 players, the number of turns being less than 14 is way too few for a 3-4 hour game. On that note, you say you haven't even played Episode 2 yet. So you're saying I've got inaccuracies, yet you've not played the most demanding, complex and longest of the two scenarios?

      @TheBrokenMeeple  Před 2 lety +2

      @bryanhchi Před 2 lety +2

      The dissenters work difffernet in a two player game vs solo. In the two player game all they do it take up space, they don’t take turns. It’s just a setup variant and one additional step on assemblies. You don’t use any rules from the solo rule book for it.

    • @bryanhchi
      @bryanhchi Před 2 lety +2

      In a two player game: after setup the dissenters do nothing until assembly: They can majority’s in each area and collect votes and if they have 1st or 2nd largest vote counts they blocks a player from scoring the followers.
      After scoring you: you add two more dice to the dice pool and place one cube on each officer.
      Other then that they do not cause any rules overhead during gameplay in a 2 player game

And it was at this point we decided to re-evaluate our game collection and purchasing habits. After Perseverance we made the decision to drastically cut down our spending and slim down our collection. And, since then, we now no longer play heavy weight games, it's too much of a chore. So, thanks Mindclash, you've saved us a heap of money. :o)

      There is now a limit of effort I think a board game can demand given how many get released every year I didn't even have to put in 1/4 of the effort to play and love ark nova.

    I’m didn’t want to comment on this video until I had a chance to play the game myself. There wasn’t a ton of good videos out there about it, and to be honest this review was swaying me in the direction of not buying the game. I’m glad I kept doing my homework because while I agree with many of his gripes. I feel he focused much more on the negative aspects than the positives. I’ve only put in 3 plays, and it feels like there is a mountain of content left to try and learn, with a long list of other great things. In short he did a good job of pointing out the flaws, but a very poor job of the positives, and most importantly I’m not really sure why he even gave it a 7 with the way he went about the review.

      The negatives are big negatives. The positive are small but numerous. And this big box is mostly held together by the production and variety of the second episode. That and a two player game can be decent, but yeah I ain't touching this with 3+ever again.

      Also frankly that number has decreased to 6 since.

    Yep, this one was disappointing, especially consiodering how long it took to deliver. This is Mindclash's first miss.
    Perseverance is named for what you have to go through to want to play the second game...
    And I say this as I received a bunch of acrylic token upgrades for Anachrony just today.

      It's going to have its fans, I mean take Bryan and Dan in the comments. That's great, but man it's amazing how the big heavy gamers will consider anything up to a Vital Lacerda game as something for kids.

      Where did you find acrylic tokens for Anachrony? It’s my top game!

    Erm. I'm curious how you ended up with your time issues/downtime issues...if you're playing with AP prone people, this game has a lot of opportunity for that to manifest. More than most, for sure. But ep1 has played faster than Trickerion for my experience and e2 has been a similar time commitment.
    I found the ep1 rules lighter than Anachrony and ep2 comparable to Anachrony with Fractures of Time. Not sure what the complaint is there if one is ok with that level of rules.
    The temple gives you a decent chunk of points... it's a good goal if adventuring is a big part of your strategy, though not necessary.
    Agree with you on the deluxe version, though.
    In ep1 you don't have to know the AI for a two player game. They just have placeholder pieces and a couple of scoring rules. I still think it's best as a 3 player game.
    You of course only have your experience to review and I really appreciate your point of view, but I would recommend people seek out other opinions on this game if it interests you.
    P.S. love the star wars robot chicken reference 😄

      Honestly, Anach with Fractures I think goes a step too far also. Me and mates stick to base mainly given that we would have to relearn the expansion rules over again each time.
      The temple cards also tend to clash with the ways you get points with officers and assemblies, they don't synergize well with each other, hell even the two stages on each card don't synergize much.

    I think overall this one is the weakest entry in the Mindclash catalogue

    "Backers" get what they deserve. KS is the scourge of the hobby. You "backers" are ruining the industry with your need to collect everything. Putting money into rubbish is not advancing anything other than plastic miniatures. KS and GF people are an entirely different breed of gamers. Play the games you own. Stop obsessively collecting. That's not board-gaming, that's collecting. Play the games you own and get good at them.

      Well I wouldn't call perseverance rubbish! But yeah more restraint would be good.

      Shheeeeshhhhh mad much? lol... Definitely not the way to tackle the problem and then again who are you to tell gamers/collectors what they want really? With this attitude the only thing you'll get is more... Swine (clever pun there) ready to be put into herds for the next overinflated KS/GF/BK. So lets pull one rope and at least appreciate that while this is a system that might be abused at the moment some companies such as Mindclash are doing great work here and it doesn't have to all be for you.
