Wonderful Material, Oregon Sunstone is high on my wish list. Same as Tony said it for Australia, also here in Europe good pieces are very rare. Thanks for the Video, great work Mike, super beautiful result👍

Looks great! I'm cutting my first sunstone... polishing-up the last facet on the pavilion and decided to do just a tad more on it & the facet looked like I had put it to a 100-grit topper. I must have found one of the cleavage planes. Hopefully, reversing lap direction will fix it. Anyway, always look forward to your videos!

WOW! Always frustrating when you are polishing and something odd happens! Hope the final stone turned out great!!

I'm new to faceting, have cut only a handful of stones. I tried several sunstones and could never get a good polish even though I hear they should be pretty easy. I'm starting to think I don't have a good enough prepolish, 1,200 grit diamond on a copper lap. What cutting sequence do you use for sunstones?

For sunstones, I may start with a finer grit...so I may skip my 200ish grit topper and may even skip my 300ish grit topper. SO I may start with 600 grit and then 1,200 grit (my 12M lap is actually about a 1,300 grit, but it's about the same as a 1,200 grit). Then I would use 3,000 grit diamond on a Batt and then I may polish...if it doesn't want to polish, I would go back to either an 8K or 14K diamond on a Batt and then try to polish again. Although you can go from 1,200 to polish, and I have done so in the past, I normally go to 3K from 1,200.

Great video. Nice stone, don't see much of the good sunstone over here, unfortunately. . We some nice feldspar's over here but they have plain coloring. The design is good too, have cut it before. BTW Congrats on your result in the competition.

I had a jewelry store in Washington and most of my customers from Oregon had never heard of Oregon sunstone , it was a very poor seller.

What was the timeframe you are referring to? My understanding from the cutting community is that east of the Mississippi, Oregon Sunstone is popular, while west of the Mississippi, many people still have not heard of it.

@@gemfaceter it appears that knowledge of Oregon Sunstone, which is the official gemstone of Oregon, is becoming more popular...give it another decade or so and even people on the east coast will have heard of it.
