Removing Rust from Metal Detecting finds without stripping the paint

- I've been cleaning my cool relics using electrolysis for years now. Even though it works really well, it strips the items down to bare metal. Now that might be fine for old axe heads and horseshoes, but when you have a relic with some original paint underneath, the electrolysis will take that away right along with the rust. A company called "The Workshop Hero" contacted me about a product that they claim they will remove rust without removing the underlying paint so I had to see for myself. Here's a before and after of their "Metal Rescue" rust remover bath and you can judge for yourself.

I gots to get me some of that to use on some tools I got from the early 1900's that my wife tried to throw into the scrap metal bucket for the scrap guy. I didn't say nothing to her I just took them out and put them in the barn where she won't every see them until I want her too... Those tools were my grandfathers and will go to my boys someday... I had one of them rockets when I was a kid I found it in a park... God only knows where it ever went to... LOL...
Thanks for sharing with us on how good that stuff can work... Be blessed.. BBE..
We all have to have a little spot to hide things the wives want us to throw away. No way I'd get rid of those old tolls either. Not only are they sentimental and maybe still functional, but old tools looks great as display pieces too. We are one in the same there. lol
Oh man. Thank you soooo much for this how to video my brother. I'm going to go find me a jug of this stuff for sure. I dug up what I thought was a dagger with a strange hook on it. Turns out...it was a old military rifle bannett. Really rusty, I could use this stuff. Thx again man and keep the videos comes. You're awesome.
It might just do the trick. The dagger sounds amazing too! Congrats.
The rocket looks amazing, thanks for the tip.
Thanks!
Cool!! Great results! Thanks for showing this Jason!!
Thanks Chris!
I love the way you showed us, just how kids played with the rocket... You have that perfected!
I’ve played with a rocket or two in my youth! Lol.
So glad i found this video and without hesitation i ordered a gallon from amazon. This cleaning agent really work. So happy with the result of my dug toy cars - effective on coins as well. Found a 1901 copper token that was so crusty, soak it for two days and the result was amazing.
Love it. Love your enthusiasm on the space ship,.... What a result.
Great that you have taken the time to share a good quality product.
Many thanks. ;-)
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Thanks Jason for the demo! My cannon ball (4 pounder found on a farm here in Maine of all places), ox cues and colonial tools clean up great with electrolysis. But I will get some of that tomorrow for my more delicate finds. Thank you for sharing this particular ‘find’ !!
I still use electrolysis a lot, this will be for when the item has paint underneath, or even if I think it MIGHT have paint. Lol.
I just got my first set up, Garrett 400, pinpointer, an digger, an carrying case, I'm just starting an its thanks to video's like yours, now I understand that yes most the items I find are trash, but I have found pretty cool stuff that, is what makes it fun. Thanks for videos.
Congrats on all the new gear! Yeah, digging trashy junk is unavoidable but there will be cool stuff mixed in. Hope you find some great pieces!
That was a shocker! Colors everywhere!
Colors colors everywhere.
Thank you for your advice on restoration of relics. It's always interesting and fun to watch you. ..
Thanks Karen. I used some things that just didn't cut the mustard. This product really seems to work so how can I not share the info! :)
That is so cool, I never thought any color would come out of that rusted rocket...awesome stuff!!
It really saved this piece for me!
That rust remover is not bad. I could see using it on new and old items. I love the fact that it doesn't remove all the paint. So many relics are so far gone it's worth trying to see what you get. Lucky for you, now you have the original colors to the rocket. Very cool stuff.
Agreed Robyn. Saving the original paint was the kicker for me. I was using an oxalic acid which did work for keeping the paint but it dulled the colors. This worked much better.
Jason that is some great stuff. I'm be adding that to my shelf for clean up. Thanks for sharing. Until next time HH&GL *Chris*
It really did the job for me Chris, especially for things with original paint left.
Metal rescue is some good stuff that was cool man thanks for taking the time
Thanks! It’s been doing the job for me for about 2 months now.
Enjoyed watching great finds coming up good mixture that I’ve used it
This is one of your best vids man.......this was so helpful to me.
Thanks Rocks! I'm always looking for new cleaning methods and products and this one really came through for me.
That stuff is awesome Jason. Thanks for sharing pal. I absolutely love the rocket ship. When I see that, I'm a kid again for a few moments. Too cool.
I’m the same way! The old kids toys (even if they were before my time) are the funnest things to find and clean up.
Turned out great! I've done citric acid baths and had similar results. It's amazing how much paint is left under all of that rust.
I've tried a few acids myself, including oxalic acid which has similar results. Sometimes we just gotta play around and see what works best
Jason that concentrate did a remarkable job. I am going to pick some up, thanks for sharing
Thanks John, it really worked well. Hope you’re doing good buddy.
Great video Jason and awesome results! Also love the shovel necklace charm 👍 I may have to get a bottle of that stuff!!
I’ve used it on about 8 things so far that has paint underneath and it does an amazing job.
That looks like some awesome stuff I will need to get some of that. Thanks!
Thanks Roy. It worked incredible for me.
awesome recovery on the buck rogers rocket.Nice detailed colors of when it was new.
Thanks Kevin. Getting those original colors is fantastic!
Great video. Going to try some out. Thanks.
Thanks Carl!
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
That’s some good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Ben! It really did the job for me
I was about to make a electrolysis bath for some relics of mine but i might try this first. Thanks Jason
Electrolysis does a fantastic job, the only drawback is that it eats the paint away too. If you have no underlying paint then it's worth the setup
I'm getting some. Amazing it hardly touches the paint. Thanks Jason.
That was the real kicker for me.
That was a neat demo!
Thanks Casper!
Dayum! That's pretty slick! I'm definitely going to buy some of that!
It's really worked some magic for me!
Picked up a jug and I am trying it out tonight. So far mixed results, while I was rinsing one item after treatment all the paint came right off. It may not eat paint, but it will break down the bonding between the paint and the surface in some cases. Probably better off not trying to rinse (or wipe down) anything that comes out of the Metal Rescue bath.
Thanks for the tip! You are the second guy (who’s opinion I would trust) to mention this product with a thumbs up. So..thumbs up on the video.
The fact that it left the paint alone was the tipping point for me. Really happy with this stuff.
Wow, awesome! I may need to get me some of that! %100 AWESOME!!!!
It works great. The electrolysis works great too, but when there's paint involved I try not to use it. This was a nice alternative and saved those colors too!
it's available at my Canadian Tire! :)
Great video brother thanks for sharing. Good luck and happy hunting.
nice! I will definitely be checking that product out
Might be worth a shot!
I've used that before on my tools and it did work. Never thought about it for the dug stuff before.
I used it on some old wrenches yesterday myself!
Wow that rocket cleaned up amazing! I never would have thought it had colors under all that
Cleaning things up can be almost as exciting as finding it all over again.
That was some impressive results!
Agreed Bear!
This is Great news! Thank you!
Thanks Jan!
Geezz. i gonna go check Canadian Tire this weekend..Thanks for sharing Jason. ATB Michael
It is pretty good stuff, and being the solution is good for a year makes the price really worth it.
Buck Rogers would be proud to hop a ride back in that ship!
Ole Buck is in his happy place.
How do you decide what to repaint? That rocket ship looked pretty good and the antiques "experts" always warn against messing with an objects patina.
I kinda base it on each item individually. Some items are so far gone that I have nothing to loose. I tried to keep them as original as possible, but my ultimate goal is just to display them.
Great video JAson!!!!! might have to get me some of that stuff!
Thanks Josh!
Works great! I'll have to give it a try on some of my old rusted military bayonets. Maybe it can reveal some of the markings.
Well doe! I really loved those results!
Me too Anna. Thanks!
Interesting man, always good to know tips on how to treat some of my relics
Agreed. I’m always scouring the interweb for new cleaning tips.
Great review.. love how the little rocket 🚀 ship 🚢 came up.. awesome
Thats pretty cool jason. Rocket ship turned out amazing. I need to dig some iron signals so i can try it out. Thanks for sharing. Jim
I only dig the ‘good iron’ signals, but don’t ask me to define that. Lol.
"You guys made a good thing", now that's a product endorsement if I've ever heard one! lol Awesome rocketship!
In my neck of the woods that's one heck of a compliment! lol
Great info, thanks!
Thanks Mark! We gotta get together man. Shoot me an email one day
That is great for painted and small items. I would prefer electrolysis on larger iron items like horse shoes and most civil war items.
I use electrolysis for almost all my ferrous cleans. This will be for if the item has paint underneath. The electrolysis will eat away the paint like Cookie Monster in a Oreo factory.
Quarter Hoarder: LOL.
Great video. I will have to get some of that.
It was some good stuff!
I must say, that was impressive!
For me too!
Definitely need some of that great video
It really did the trick!
Awsome job on the buck rogers rocket.
Thanks Jeff!
Awesome new product....the Rocket Ship came out so cool....thanks for the info.... HH
That rocket did come out cool! Top shelf display piece now.
Wow yeah. I might have to pick some of that up. I like the idea of electrylsis but that stuff seems to work. Love the rocket ship. GL & HH Jason
I’m a big fan of the electrolysis too. Like I said though, it eats away any original paint along the way and that’s my only reservation doing it that way on certain things.
that's great stuff i need some for my chain and traps.
If they’re rusted I bet it would work.
If you search this on that Bay site you can see one for sale --"" Vintage-Wyandotte-Pressed-Steel-1930s-Buck-Rogers-Rocket-Ship"" After you cleaned yours up it really is in good shape. The colors are sweet!!! Super cool!
Thanks Andrew. Mine is missing the wheels but I'm still working on the restoration. This was just the first step and it did a great job for me.
Fantastic product
Thanks Liz
Great info, many thanks Jason. ATB MMMD
Thanks!
Great video, thank you!
Thanks!
Wow, that's so cool!
Agreed Sherry, super cool!
great info thanks for sharing
Thanks Kiah
A must try ! thanks
It worked like magic Jim!
20 dollars for that seems like a pretty good deal, especially since you can reuse it. Good show QH.
I agree. If it was a single use product It would seem high. Being you can use it over and over for a year, the $20 is pretty reasonable.
How awesome is that? It looks great!
It did come out great! Thanks Trevor
Since you said your not making anything from this review I figured I would share my tip....Here's a tip for you......remove rust with Sno - bol toilet bowl cleaner. Get a bottle from the dollar store. Works just as well. Been using it for years. I even removed the rust from a 65 Chevy before repairing the bad areas with new metal. I found this out years ago while running a charter fishing business in Fl. salt water. Tools would get destroyed unless I soaked them for a couple hours in Sno-bol....
I’ll look for that in my dollar store and give it a shot on some junky items. I’m always looking for new cleaning methods. Thanks.
Great video Jason! That stuff really cleaned up that rocket ship. I wonder if it cures dandruff? 🤔
I’ll try it and see, on the Nibbler of course. 😊
What I figured out is the best process now is first electrolysis then a bit of scrubbing to get at least the majority of the black oxidation off with a brass wire brush and maybe a little WD-40. Then I put it in the metal rescue to soak because I find a lot of pain in the ass weird oxidation that isn't the black oxidation or rust and it's nearly impossible to get it all off very quickly at least the metal rescue does that for me. This process all takes me a day or two it used to take me a month to get a relic looking that way. after all that the only thing left to do is treat it. By the way quarter hoarder thanks for the coupon code six months or so ago for the at Pro. Not only am I finding awesome stuff but I figured out the Relic restoration also
Thanks Jason I'll have to try that stuff. Carl HH
I think you'll like it Carl! We appreciate the same kinda things
THANK U SO MUCH.
That rocket ship, just wow!
Agreed! Thanks Parker!
Awesome cleaning product! I have used TSP but never checked to see if it harms the paint. That's rocket ship looked great, and is an awesome find. Nicely done on the 'NOT' infomercial! HH Amy
Thanks Amy. Kids toys are my favorite digs so I'm always looking for good ways to preserve them as best I can. I heard you had a live stream too! Sorry I missed it but hopefully I'll catch the next one
I enjoy the toys too, of course, I have yet to find anything really old, next week I am going to GA, I have permission to hunt over 100 acres on two different properties. This will be my first real chance at maybe getting a real relic. Wish me luck! No worries about missing the live stream, with all your subs, you can't be expected to get to everyone. Have a Nice Evening! Amy
would you use this on a steel helmet from the eastern front if you were trying to preserve the painted decal?
Howw about corroded rusty coins? Cuz I found a big coin it looks 1oz and it's hard to move away the rust from it what should I use I don't want to damage it?
awesome jason liz diggin canuck was looking to clean a buckel
It might just do the trick! I'll have to message her
I will give it a try Jason
Might be worth it. I’m sure you have some cool stuff!
Now that's what I call a product that sells it self!!! Thax for the share! How much $$$ R we talking bout?
The concentrate I used costs $20 and once mixed the solution is good for a year to be used over and over again. Not bad considering how many times you can use it.
your the man bro!!!,,Great info thanks!! HH-Ray
Thanks Ray! If things work I figure I’ll share it with the other diggers.
Brilliant, thanks for sharing, I’ll be getting some 🚀😜
Hope it helps you out! Thanks.
Awesome!
Thanks Norma!
I like the results you got on the toy rocket. Did you leave the plate in any longer to see if it got any better? I have a couple plates from the 30's that were dug up at a construction site that need a lot of rust removed.
I left the plate it another 24hours and it did get better. The rust is almost all gone but I did loose a lot of the colors. The rust crept underneath of them so there was no way to salvage that paint.
Evaporust is another miracle worker!
Gotta get me some of that stuff!! Wow!!!
It does do some magic!
I found several 1929-1937 license plates and I'm going to use this on them top restore them
All I can say is, WOW!
It really preserves those colors!
Great job and great info Jason. Thanks. BOLOYN, Mike
Thanks Mike. What the heck is Boloyn?
Best of luck on your next
You kids and your fancy text lingo. lol
Lol... I just made it up.
Wow, YMMV. I lost two artifacts this morning because the paint was rendered so fragile that just pulling the object from the bath caused it all to lift off and float away.
I wouldn't use this product unless you are prepared to accept the risk that you may lose the paint. It seems fine for horseshoes and oxen shoes, but for painted objects I'd say only use it as a last resort ... like you were planning to throw the object away if you couldn't get the color back.
Also tested it on some corroded brass items, didn't really work, but then that's not what it is meant for anyway.
Recommendations for use on painted objects:
1. Be extremely careful removing the object from the bath.
2. Do not wipe, rinse, or dunk the object. Just let it dry.
3. Do not use on anything that you aren't willing to risk losing the paint on.
4. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come into contact with the fluid.
Dunno if the paint is still fragile when an artifact is allowed to dry. You might need to apply a spray lacquer once the object is dry. Don't know about that, all my painted stuff lost the paint so I can't test that.
Anyway seems like a good product for removing rust, just be VERY careful using it on dug artifacts.
I'm sorry you had bad results with it. I've used it on about 15 things so far but all have worked well. Were your items iron/steel or some other material. Like I said, I'm not sponsored by them so you won't hurt my feelings. Just curious how your results came in differently.
One was an old "Dr. Robinson's" condom tin. Not sure what the metal was... aluminum maybe? The other was a back plate from an old thermometer. I thought it was aluminum, but the silver color turned out to be silver paint.
Brass shotgun shell didn't really show much improvement, was hoping to get the shine back.
No need to apologize, how could you know? :-) It's still a good product, and I will use it again, just be very careful with it, that's all. I'd hate for you to lose the artwork on your beautiful tobacco tins and so forth. :-)
Would have looked something like this if it had survived the bath:
antiqueadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/D3-131.png
Have you tried using vinagers? My brother use to use it on car body parts. He had a huge body part bath he reused.
I have tried vinegar and it does work. I've just had mixed results with the underlying paint with it though.
Quarter Hoarder cool. I hv used it on tools but most didnt hv paint. That was my 1 concern. But if yoh planed on repainting then it wouldnt matter if paint is still there afterwards. Its nice to remove all first thrn choose to remove pain afterwards. Options are good
Will you repaint over the original paint or leave it as is? Nice results
Thanks Jimmy. I’ll leave the rocket original but I’ll repaint the plate.
Is the bubbling on the rocket ship toy's paint due to environmental damage (i.e. being in the ground for several years) or a result of the rust remover product? To restore the toy's original look, you'll likely have to strip the remaining paint and start over anyway.
Yes, environmental damage from being buried underground for 75 years which really took a toll. I’m afraid if I tried to sand down all the pitting the thin and fragile tin body may not survive the process.
Very kool product, where can I buy it? Home Depot, Lowes maybe? Thanks Jason
I think Hone Depot has it (at least mine does). I see it on Amazon too but I always like to hold things in my hand before I buy it. Lol.
The product is also available at harbor fright near me. I'm sure lots of stores sell it.
I didn't know Harbor Freight carried it. That's one of my favorite stores
Quarter Hoarder yes the one's by me do. Can buy small or gallon jug.
Hi Jeff, we are not available at Harbor Freight. You can get Metal Rescue at your local Home Depot or AutoZone, or order here on our online store: www.workshophero.com/store
Hi Jason, looks like a good product, and no messing... wonder if they sell it in the UK... probably something similar....
take care mate
GL & HH
Tom
I’m not sure if they sell it overseas or not Tom. I’m just always looking for new cleaning methods and it really did the job for me, especially saving that paint. The one downside to digging stuff up is that’s it’s always dirty. Lol.

EARTH ANGEL😇 Interesting video Jason! 🤔👍 Sure seems like a cleaner way to wash away the rust! I noticed that you didn’t have to wear gloves 🧤🧤, either!💕🤑🙄🙂👍
It says it’s safe but you should probably wear gloves anyway. I always forget about gloves but I do wash my hands a lot afterwards. Lol
My local Home Depot sells this so I'm going to pick up a bottle!
Awesome!
Cool!!! 😎
Thanks Angela!
Cool
Dude
It was cool!
Looks like a good product, although I got similar results with citric acid solution. ATB
I’ve used Citrix acid and Oxalic acids. They do work but I find that they dull the paint.
Wow great stuff gtgms
Thanks Dennis!
