    CHICKEN GYROS
    Servings: 8
    INGREDIENTS
    Marinade
    2 cups Greek yogurt
    ¼ cup lemon juice
    ¾ cup olive oil
    1 tablespoon kosher salt
    1 tablespoon garlic, minced
    1 tablespoon ground coriander
    1 tablespoon paprika
    1 tablespoon ground cumin
    ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1 teaspoon black pepper
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, pounded flat
½ large yellow onion, peeled and root side removed
1 sturdy wooden skewer (roughly 10 inches)
    Tzatziki Sauce
    1 large cucumber, shredded
    2 cups Greek yogurt
    1 tablespoon garlic, minced
    ¼ cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
    Salt and pepper to taste
    8 pitas
    Sliced onion
    Sliced tomato
    PREPARATION
    1. In a large bowl, combine marinade ingredients and stir well.
    2. In another large bowl or gallon plastic bag, combine chicken thighs and marinade, stirring well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour and up to one day.
    3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
    4. In a medium bowl, combine tzatziki ingredients and stir well. 5.Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
6.On a baking sheet or a large cast-iron skillet, use the onion half as a base and position the skewer vertically like a spit. Skewer the chicken thighs individually, rotating each one 90 degrees. Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, until internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Let cool for 10 minutes.
    7. Carve off slices of chicken to fill a pita. Top with onion slices, tomato slices, and tzatziki sauce.
    8. Enjoy!

Just made this today. Turned out delicious, though I recommend using multiple skewers to keep the chicken from falling over. I ended up making something of a tri-pod with skewers since the onion base wasn't stable enough to keep everything upright in the oven.

Tip for the greek yogurt and cucumber sause (taziki): Add a bit of salt to the grated cucumber and leave for a bit before squeezing the water... With this you can take more water out, and prevent water to get in your sause later.

Just made this!!! So yummy!! Only thing I did different was put the thighs on the grill and we used red onions instead of the white ones. At first we thought the sauce was a bit acidic but when we put it on the meat, and that along with the tomatoes complimented it well. The onions really set the flavor off too. This is one we will be having often!!! Thank you! 😊

In tzatziki we use yogurt, salt garlic, olive oil and cucumbers. (And pepper sometimes) when assembling we also put the tzatziki first as a layer in the pita and the we put the rest of the ingredients. If you spread the tzatziki in the pita then with every pita bite you are guaranteed a bit of tzatziki. Also as last topping we use fries and we wrap it in itself in a cone shape. Also we don't use cinnamon in the chicken. (Or at least I have never tested chicken gyros that smells/tastes like cinnamon)
Assembling the chicken in the wooden stick with the onion on the bottom is a great idea but the fact that it's not rotating you aren't gonna have that crispy end. Then again it's the safest way to make it at home so thumbs up for that.
I just enjoy watching tasty videos and I clicked on this one out of curiosity :p

Made this today with 10 peace of chicken and here are a couple of tips: 1. Use foil (I used a parchment paper first and the juice burned on it and made a smoking mess in the oven, changed it to foil and life got easy!) 2. Skip the onion at the bottom (reason is that it gets soft and your tower keeps falling and it gets annoying. The first couple layers of chicken create the base for the rest of them, so no need for an onion!)

So about 30 mins into the cooking it fell over. Before applying the meat I placed a pan to see how straight the onion was cut and it was straight across. Not sure why it would not stay straight.
I just turned it on its side and wrapped the bottom with foil then turned it on the other side for the last 30 mins. The meat was tasty 😋
For my family and I the Tzatziki sauce had to much lemon. Placed
with the rest of the food it was fine but to dip with bread it was to much lemon.
Wish I would have done 4 lbs of meat to have more leftovers. Much cheaper then takeout but a little more then our normal budget meals.
    I give this recipe 4 ⭐️

Add a cookie cooler on top of the cookie sheet. So that part of the skewer can stick out of the bottom of the onion. I've found the cookie cooler helps it balance so it wont fall over! (also idk the appropriate term for cookie cooler lmao. its what i call the grid surface that you place cookies on to cool them down!)
Also... i suggest not using yogurt for the marinade. And marinate for a min of 24 hours for the best results. Coming from experience

Made this for dinner the other night. Easy and delicious. The chicken is nicely seasoned and easy to make, and the Tzatziki Sauce was a great compliment to it. Did use less lemon (only a tablespoon and a half) for the Tzatziki Sauce. Will make again.

Cut it, if it ain't pink then it's cooked. Marinade the chicken overnight, it'll retain more flavor and won't dry up much.

OKAY THAT'S IT. I am tired and sick of reading comments of greeks and turks arguing about how gyros is not greek. Everybody is being so selfish right now, like COME ON OKAY YOU CAN STAND UP FOR YOUR COUNTRY but saying that gyros is completely your country's? Childish in my opinion... I am greek and as far as i know GYROS was invented by turks and then greeks discovered it and started making it themselves with some small changes shortly after. May i also add that turks have another name for gyros... What i am trying to say is that gyros is greek because greeks claimed it and it soon became a part of their most known 《dishes》. Turks have the right to say that they invented it but hating on greeks for having a similar recipe is UNEXCEPTABLE. Please no more fighting over food.. Y'all are embarassing your countries.. Döner is Turkish and Gyros is Greek THE END

I made this and it tasted great, the onions I had may have been too small because I had trouble with the meat falling over so I put it in a cake pan and ended up having it fall over, half the chicken was crisp and tasty and the other half was in a strange mixture of oil and sauce. I would recommend not making the same mistake and using multiple skewers

  • @betaomega04
    @betaomega04 Před 4 lety +2

I tried this. It's better to skewer and set the thighs upright so that all of the surface area has a chance char a bit. When you stack it like in the video, the inside marinade doesn't cook as well.
