    As promotion for Black Swan they released an actual art film of it. It's another arrangement and performed by a comtemporary dance company. It's amazing.
    Black Swan is based on a quote by famous choreographer Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing and this first death is the most painful one." So you're spot on with the fear of losing their passion for music.
    Black Swan pre-dates Dynamite by half a year but yes, it deserves so much more recognition than it's gotten.

    Your reaction when you watched it for the first time was mine also! I’m 38 and have loved boy bands since the 90s and when I decided to click Butter I was blown away! BTS is like no other! They are in a league all there own, and I’m not just talking about compared to other boy bands, I’m saying they are just artist all there own! There is no one doing it like them! They are absolutely incredible! I am absolutely hooked! They are amazing humans and there work ethic is mind blowing!

      Hi. I will be 38 in September. And I'm ARMY from 2018 Fake Love era. I was huge BSB and then JT fan. But I've never been so obsessed like I'm over BTS. They are ARTISTS. Great dancers,vocalists,rappers, lyricists and producers. They are great people. I wish everyone finds in them more than just a pretty faces. BTS helping and healing with their music and content.

    He is such a versatile dancer and excels in ever genre. Combine that with his ability to show expression and portray it in his facial expressions and dance is so rare. He is such a special dancer. A special singer too.

    12:55 Yes! You grasped the themes entirely. As others have pointed out, this mv was actually preceded by an, "art film," with a different arrangement of the music danced by a contemporary dance company. My suggestion would be to watch that video next, then watch, "Interlude: Shadow," from the same album, which also explores these themes.
    You're doing a fantastic job of analysing BTS' music thematically & aesthetically on your own, but if you do want some further background, keep the name of the album series in mind: "Map of The Soul." "Jung's Map Of The Soul," is a book by Murray Steiner that explains/explores Jungian psychanalytic model, with a particular focus on persona, shadow & ego.

  • @ashleyder9164
    @ashleyder9164 Před 2 lety +18

    On and Black Swan are both on the same album, which explores the Shadow in Jungian psychology, so you are very right about the shared themes. And also about the use of mirrors. On point.

    Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. I love ur deep dives. Not only do they use Black Swan the movie in this but they use a philosophers idea of accepting ur shadow self to be whole. In ON u see some with white fits they are innocent. Those with black accepted temptation. And those with both are becoming whole. This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. They could not write songs anymore. They were in pain and scared. Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜
    Jen W said on 6/7/22
    Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence.
    Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top.
    Shadow/mirror images - self reflection.
    Black Swan: Mainly written by RM, the one you like, is about their fears of losing all passion for music, either writing it or performing on stage. It's also based on a quote by Martha Graham who was an important figure in the world of modern dance, "A dancer dies twice. Once when they stop dancing and this death is more painful." They've been doing this for a long time now and for some of them it's all they've ever done from a young age but realized music is their life.
    MsBeatrice_81 said on 3/19/22
    Fun fact: Before BTS began doing it, it wasn't normal at all for Korean idol groups to release songs with deeper meanings, discuss serious topics in their songs, acknowledge issues of vulnerability like burnout, depression or mental illness. It wasn't normal for idols to open up about their personal troubles at all. In fact, doing so got some idols thrown out of their companies. It was also not normal or common to have a running storyline/theme that is carried through multiple albums and/or MVs and songs. But BTS did it all so successfully, and broke those stigmas, to the point that now many other Korean idol groups have started trying to do those things, with varying degrees of sincerity and success.
    This song, its lyrics and MV are part of the "Shadow" portion of BTS's Map of the Soul era, in which they released albums and songs based on Carl Jung's theories regarding the Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This track is an exploration of their "shadow" selves' fear that they may someday lose their passion for their art - they ask if perhaps they are already losing it- and they wonder what comes after that "first death" of the loss of passion. In the end, they continue to fight for their passion and their art, claiming they won't be swept away by these fears again. I would encourage you to think about how counter-cultural BTS is being in songs like this: Not only are they dealing with topics that were taboo only a few years ago, but they're being unbelievably personally vulnerable, sincere and open. This is why we love them so much, and I'm sure you will, too! 💜
    Example: A couple of weeks ago Jimmy Fallon had BTS on his late night show. They performed a song called Idol at This Idol performance at Gyeongbokgung Palace as a background and wearing hanboks. There are so many amazing location Rich with Ancient history. Here is a link to the idol performance, so you can see the background visual of the palace. czcams.com/video/MXFkjMNXfpY/video.html

    Their album Map of the Soul: 7, from which both Black Swan and ON were drawn, was a milestone album for them where they looked back on their careers and ahead to the future. Sadly, the accompanying, highly anticipated tour never happened: it was canceled, date by date, as the world shut down for Covid 19. The single Dynamite, their first group song wholly in English, was created in the midst of their own pain.to bring joy to a suffering world. Eventually they put it into their healing quarantine album BE.

  • @sugasmeow
    @sugasmeow Před 2 lety +2

    The Map of the Soul series revolves around Carl Jung’s concepts of self. The persona is who we show the world. The shadow is the part of ourselves that is our fears and doubts. The ego is our conscious self. Our hopes and dreams. This is a part of the shadow concept. Fearing the time when our passion no longer excites us. To BTS that is music. Yes, On is also a part of the shadow concept.

    When we see and acknowledge our dark side (the weak, depressed, wanting to give up side of ourselves) we are then able to know our true selves and work to make our selves stronger. This then gives way to our dark side subsiding and frees us to be who we really our in the light of day.

    Digging into the English translation of the lyrics, the song is all about BTS' love for all things art and music, but it delves into the fear that comes with possibly losing your passion for art. But in the end, the boys realize that art is all they have.

    really loving your bts analysis videos! you were spot on here! they released this because they wanted to explore the feelings they would have if they potentially lost their passion for music one day, hoping that moment never comes because it would be their "first death". I would love to see your reaction to the BTS Universe soon! The "BU" is a fictional storyline that runs through many of their music videos (ex. BST is a part of the BU). The first part of the story starts with I NEED U, On Stage: Prologue, and RUN. if you do start the BU, just know that the lyrics to the songs in the BU aren't really relevant to the story since its the visuals and the video that showcase the story.

    Dynamite broke through the barriers they were facing in the US. It's unfortunate that they had to release an all English song to do that, but it is what it is. I firmly believe that, had Black Swan been released after this barrier was torn down, Black Swan would have received the Grammy nomination, and possibly won. I look forward to what comes next, so they can show the world what amazing ARTISTS they are. It's a slow climb, but the whole world can't deny them forever, not even us Americans.

    Black Swan will always be a masterpiece. I just think it deserves every award that existed out there. About Jhope's part, my take on it is that, dont force me to stop doing things im passionate about, let me go, my me carry my own feet, its like there's this dark'ness/shadow that always makes them feel like they are starting to lose focus/ losing purpose, that tells them this is not your purpose anymore, but jhope/bts still wanna fight for it, like 'let me still keep going, i know one day i'll reach to a point where i have to stop doing these' and something like 'i can see myself sometime in the future, where i will stop doing music, doing what im so passionate about like right now'. Jhope's anfd Suga's part supporting each other; "i saw myself" meaning yes, i can see myself someday losing passions, its a scary thing to imagine losing something so precious for you at the moment. But as artists thats how they felt. No other song ever made me had such a deep appreciation and respects for artists out there who really tries to bring values to arts. I love arts myself, arts itself is such a huge topic; art is everywhere and in everything. i've come to a point i actually cried to this song, something just moved me about how amazing these guys are in expressing ideas/ issues like this.
    You are right, consuming BTS's music and contents are head-cracking. some say bts makes music for the intelligents bcs of how indepth the spectrum of their music are. they do every genre, lyricism are top-tier, A TRUE ARTISTS who brings so much value to their arts and performance. BTS will be legends in the future, will always be remembered for their work and masterpieces.

    the shadow is very prominent theme of Map Of The Soul 7 album, Black Swan included
    we see a lot of shadows behind the boy, many of them are from projectors that light up the stage. the more light falls, the bigger shadow gets, right?
    now the shadow is connected to the card jung psychology, it's whatever we don't what to know and show about ourselves, suppressed content of the unconscious mind. so it can be fears, doubts, insecurities, etc

    I almost felt you were goi v to tear up and the live performances of this give me serious goosebumps. One of the most beautiful pieces of art/music they’ve made that got me hooked on them deeply. The aesthetics of this the outfits, barefoot choreography, yet the rap and discussion of losing their passion for music/art. In the lives they’ve changed it up from a short version with stunning backgrounds, to longer classical arrangement performance on water with full ballet like lifts, to the most recent live version in LA they’ve challenged us changing it up so often. Appreciate your enthusiastic reaction.

    I'm not sure if this is your type of humor but here's something to watch after black swan. The guy who does these is a legend, millions of views. It's just 2 mins, you can totally watch on your own without doing a reaction, I find him really hilarious 😊
